BOSTON - AUGUST 28: Frank Edgar celebrates with the belt after defeating BJ Penn in a five round decision during their UFC lightweight title bout at the TD Garden in Boston.

UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar will make his second defense of championship against No. 1 contender Gray Maynard on New Year's Day at UFC 125, MMAFighting.com reports.

The UFC lightweight stars will square off for the 155-pound championship at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas during the New Year's Day UFC 125 event, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to MMA Fighting.

Maynard is undefeated in the UFC, compiling an 8-0 record (with one no contest) in nine UFC bouts. On April 2, 2008, Maynard defeated Edgar by unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 13. He earned his title shot by convincingly defeating two-time title challenger Kenny Florian by unanimous decision last month at UFC 118.

Not many expected Edgar to even be champion, but he earned his undisputed status by whitewashing B.J. Penn at UFC 118. Edgar's loss to Maynard is his only loss in nine UFC fights.

Edgar won his title by defeating Penn by unanimous decision at UFC 112.

The show will go head-to-head with the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
