Well, that was incredible. Fabricio Werdum did the impossible, beating the "Michael Jordan of MMA" in relatively easy fashion. Fedor’s propensity to play with fire proved his demise, as he was caught in a triangle choke by the best grappler in MMA’s heavyweight division, across all organizations. But where does this put us?
First of all, congrats to Werdum. It’s the biggest upset this side of GSP/Serra I, and puts him in line to fight Alistair Overeem for the Strikeforce heavyweight title.
Second, I’ll say this does nothing to tarnish Fedor’s legacy in my eyes. He is the best heavyweight in MMA history and it’ll take any other fighter a lot to surpass him in that regard.
Third: I suppose UFC 116 will actually determine who the undisputed current top heavyweight is.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Fedor going forward. He has one fight left on his contract, but I have a sneaking suspicion it will be against Josh Barnett in Japan. After that, he has a few options that I’ll list in decreasing order of likeliness to happen: retire; continue fighting in Japan for ridiculous paydays against joke fighters; go groveling on bended knee to the UFC.
I can’t wait to see how this all pans out.
I'll have more thoughts after sleeping on it.
