Strikeforce Planning June 16 Event for LA

Mike Chiappetta says plans are in the works:

Strikeforce is eyeing a June 16 date for an upcoming live event, a source with knowledge of the situation told MMA Fighting.

Though the date is not yet confirmed, according to the source, it appears that the company has it targeted. A site has yet to be chosen, though the San Jose, Calif., based promotion is leaning towards a show in the Los Angeles area to coincide with the massive E3 entertainment expo.

The company has been tentatively planning a June date to feature the return of heavyweight superstar Fedor Emelianenko, but it appears unlikely that the June 16 show will include him. The date falls on a Wednesday and seems more likely to be a Challengers Series card. Since teaming up with Showtime and CBS, all of the company's major shows have taken place on Saturdays

If it's a Challengers card, Strikeforce's biggest star definitely won't be on the card. That would make it more than seven months since since his primetime debut on CBS for the Russian's next fight. With Alistair Overeem looking to defend his heavyweight championship against Brett Rogers on May 15, it seems that the victor of that match would be in prime position to defend the title against Fedor in the late summer or early fall.

Should things shape up with Emelianenko set to fight by then, I'd say scrap his fight with Fabricio Werdum and just have his title match on CBS. There is a really big card waiting to be made there that could include Fedor vs. Overeem and Dan Henderson vs. Gegard Mousasi, which would rival anything the UFC puts out this year.
