What's Next For UFC Light Heavyweight Phil Davis?

New, 18 comments

UFC light heavyweight Phil Davis improved his overall record to 6-0 this past weekend at UFC 112, defeating Alexander Gustafsson via submission.  The former Penn State wrestling standout has looked really good in his two UFC fights, both against guys that are primarily strikers in Gustafsson and Brian Stann.  The UFC seems to have a formula they use to bring along talented prospects, just take a look at how they brought Cain Velasquez and now Jon Jones through the ranks.  We know that Davis has outstanding wrestling pedigree and seems to have caught on to the submission game fairly easily.  The only question marks as of right now are his striking ability and probably submission defense against a notable grappler(besides the obvious of can he take a solid punch).  He does not have a problem with cardio as he went the distance with Brian Stann and was constantly transitioning and moving throughout the 15 minute period.

Now I don't want the UFC to use the same fighters they used to build Jon Jones obviously, but he needs to take that step up in competition.  The guy has good personality and yet remains humble and realizes he has many areas to improve  upon.  His UFC 112 post-fight interview is after the jump.  In the meantime, who would you like to see him matched up against next?
