First of all, I know the crowd didn't consist of JUST fans from North Carolina. However, I have to say that I'm REALLY disappointed that we didn't break the all time record for Ultimate Fight Night events. I contacted the Bojangles Coliseum on March 9th, and they indicated that there were only 4,000 tickets left for the event. Which meant that over 6,600 had evaporated somehow since the venue could have accomodated 10,600. I know the official numbers haven't been released by the NC Boxing authority, but only a thousand tickets went out the door during the last 3 weeks leading up to the event? Here's a plausible reason:
The Charlotte Bobcats(NBA) had a home game that had an attendance of 14,139. It doesn't hurt when that team is going to finally make the playoffs after years of knocking on the door. I don't know how much of an overlap there is between NBA basketball fans, but if the UFN event could have gotten 5% of that crowd it would have pushed attendance past 8,000.
The event does rank in the top ten for attendance and gate though, so I guess we'll have to settle for that and represent better next time.
I wil say that the crowd seemed hyped! Our very own Rich Wyatt attended and will be dropping a piece on the experience later I believe. There wasn't much booing or anything from what I could tell. There was a feint "USA" chant during the Florian/Gomi fight, but that quickly dissipated(Thank GOD).
I wasn't able to attend the event myself because of work(like many due to the event being mid-week), but I'd like to thank those that attended. You represented us well. Now which one of you turned out the damn lights? :)
