Newly-formed promotional company Black Eye Entertainment will bring a pro/am card of MMA action to Asheville, NC on Friday, November 19th! The event will be held at the WNC Agricultural Center Expo Arena and tickets can be purchased by visiting blackeyepromotions.com. Black Eye Promotions is the creation of manager and matchmaker Michael "Cornbread" Allen. The emergence of Black Eye Promotions represents a real opportunity for amateur and pro talent in the Carolinas as there is now another option for fighters that are looking to stay busy and hone their skills. But what really impresses about Black Eye Entertainment's initial venture into MMA promotion is the quality initial card that they are offering fight fans in the Asheville area. Oh, and if that wasn't enough, a special guest in attendance will be none other than former world light heavyweight champion "Sugar" Rashad Evans!
Fight card preview (pro portion) after the jump:
The first pro bout of the evening will see North Carolina's Matt Covan (4-5) facing off with South Carolina's Ronnie Rogers (5-4) at 155 pounds. Covan will be the hometown favorite but don't be surprised if Rodgers has a sizable cheering section. He has a noticeable group of fans that faithfully come out to see him fight.
Another 155 pound fight to keep an eye on involves Jacob Allman. Allman (2-0) was a standout amateur fighter with a 7-0 record and was MMA For Real's # 1 ranked lightweight amateur earlier this year. Since turning pro, he has rattled off two wins in a row and looks to take a step up in front of his hometown crowd. If Jacob could get a win here, it would cap an outstanding 2010 for this former collegiate wrestler. In his way will be Dustin Center (1-0). Center is a talented fighter from Ohio and is looking to play the spoiler. This should be an entertaining fight where we see both guys tested tremendously.
The pro debut of South Carolina's Matt "Spiderman" Tran is worth the price of admission alone. At 7-0 as an amateur, Tran has been MMA For Real's # 1 ranked amateur 135 pound fighter and is one of the top pro prospects in the region. He will be facing another good fighter in Alton Tyler, also making his pro debut. Tran combines solid striking with excellent technique and surprisingly quick submission attempts. Tyler is a threat to any bantamweight in the region with his gritty toughness and solid amateur background. This should be a good fight with the winner getting their pro career off to a strong start.
The matchup of Asheville, NC fighter Preston "The Expert" Marks (4-3 pro; 2-0 amateur and MMA For Real's # 2 pro Bantamweight) and Chris Cain (1-0 pro; 7-2 amateur) has the potential to be the "Fight of the Night". Here you have a slick submission artist with impressive striking (Marks) against a Relson Gracie-trained pugilist that has been on a recent tear (Cain). This one should provide some fast paced entertainment. With both fighters being this adept on the ground, don't leave your seats or you could miss a fight-ending submission at any moment.
This brings us to the main event of the evening. After competing at middleweight until this point, Johnny "Buck Nasty" Buck (8-7 pro; 4-0 amateur) is testing the waters at 170 pounds. In typical fashion, he is facing a talented opponent in Frank Wazkut (2-0 pro). Like Jacob Allman, Buck is a former collegiate wrestler at The Citadel and brings strong wrestling skills, solid ground and pound skills and a very aggressive attitude into the cage. One thing to know about Buck is that he has improved greatly as a fighter in the past year. He has been on a tear in 2010 and looks to continue that with a win in front of his hometown crowd on November 19th. Wazkut will prove to be a significant opponent for Buck and you can expect this match to deliver some real excitement.
With amateur standouts like Vince Alberico (3-0), Micah Lail (9-5) and others on the undercard, this entire show should provide a great night of fighting for MMA fans anywhere within the vicinity of western North Carolina. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT miss this fight card.
