4th Quarter 2009: My Ten Most Interesting Fights In MMA

New, 4 comments

As I was preparing to leave to go on vacation I began to think about all of the news and things I would miss during my absence, so I began to look at some match ups that are coming on on the horizon.  I kept going and going and noticed that there are some really good fights coming up even though there seems to be a lapse in regards to BIG events for the next 3 months.  I mean UFC 106 is stacked, but that's about it so far.  So I came up with ten fights that really interest me for one reason or another and I thought I'd share them with you.  In no particular order after the jump.

  • Drew McFedries vs. Tomasz Drwal at UFC 103-Simply because somebodies getting KTFO in this one.
  • Sam Stout vs. Phillipe Nover at UFN 19-Sam Stout is hardly ever in a boring fight, and it'll be interesting to see how Nover performs in this fight.  He was the front runner to win TUF 8 only to lose in the finals, and also loss(controversially) at UFC 98.  So a loss here could possibly put him in the chopping blocks.
  • Karo Parisyan vs. Dustin Hazelett at UFC 106-I've always been a Karo fan, and I like Hazelett as well.  We know that Karo has been fighting some demons as of late and he's coming off a suspension for failing a drug test after UFC 94.  Hazelett is coming off an injury, so it'll be interesting to see how this one plays out.  Both are pretty exciting fighters will fighting near 100%.  The winner of this one could be a player in the UFC welterweight division.
  • Mike Brown vs. Jose Aldo at WEC 44-I like Aldo and he's been knocking fools out left and right.  However, he'll be going up against a different kind of fighter in Mike Brown.  It'll be interesting to see how Aldo deals with a much larger/physical fighter like Brown.  Can he get up off his back if taken down, or will he be able to submit Brown from his back?
  • Shinya Aoki vs. Joachim Hansen at DREAM 11-This will be Hansen's first fight in over a year since suffering a head injury in 2008.  His last fight was a TKO stoppage over Shinya Aoki at DREAM 5.  This will be the rubber match between the two fighters since Aoki subbed Hansen back in 2006.
  • Mirko Cro Cop vs. Junior Dos Santos at UFC 103-I like both fighters regardless of how many times I've written Mirko off.  I've always said that I hope he proves me wrong.  This could be a big coming out party for him against Dos Santos, who's a hungry lionaccording to Mirko.  The winner of this one is probably one or two fights away from a title shot.
  • Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers at Strikeforce-Everyone thinks this is a mis-match and it probably is, but I'm give Rogers the benefit of the doubt.  He has KO power, and Fedor has to lose at some point right?  Nah, I don't think Rogers will win, but at least Fedor isn't fighting the likes of Hong Man Choi again.
  • BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez at UFC 107-Oh man, this one has all the makings of an absolute classic.  Two fighters that are well rounded, don't like to lose, and are not afraid to engage.  Most of all it's for the UFC lightweight title.  Could you really ask for more?
  • Shogun Rua vs. Lyoto Machida at UFC 104-A lot of people seem to think that this will be a walk in the park for Machida, but I don't think that's the case.  I watched the Rua/Liddell fight and Rua seemed to have picked up some of the explosiveness he used to possess prior to the knee injury.  Then again, it could have just been that he was fighting Chuck Liddell who's almost lethargic nowadays.  This fight either announces that Rua is back, or really signifies the beginning of the Machida era.  It's not as hard to get to the top as it is to stay there. Just ask former UFC LHW champions Forrest Griffin and Rashad Evans.
  • Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin at UFC 106-The battle of the heavyweights...literally.  This will answer the question of can Brock Lesnar handle someone close to his own size.  I think this one is going to have a very violent finish with someone going to sleep.  This fight has a lot of bearing on future match ups in the UFC HW division as well.

There you have it, my top ten fights to look out for in the last quarter of 2009.  Let's see your list.
