Gina Carano speaks to Ariel Helwani about her negotiations with Strikeforce and talks with the UFC:
Frankly, I am absolutely unmotivated by money. And I know that maybe people take that and don’t understand what that means, but I am just not. What I am interested in is people that have respect. Not only respect for me, but people who have respect for women in MMA. So, the better that I can do for myself and the better I represent myself - which I have to work on all of this, by the way - the better it is for the sport…Yeah, that’s kind of been a little bit of the hold-up, also. I have sat down with Dana and (Zuffa co-owner) Lorenzo (Fertitta) and they have expressed interest and want to do something, but I am a little wary because I know that Strikeforce is signing women and the "Cyborg" (Santos) fight is over there. But to go and sign with the UFC would be amazing, also. I would have to go and fight (the contract that Strikeforce bought from EliteXC) in court and that would just seem like it would put more months in between me fighting, staying active and staying sane. I have a lot of decisions to make.
Now, you notice that the first thing she says is that she's absolutely unmotivated by money. Umm...isnt' that one of the main reasons she's re-negotiating this old EliteXC contract with Strikeforce? Why not just fight and honor the old contract she had that Strikeforce acquired?
Helwani later asks:
Let’s just say that you were a real free agent and not tied to any organization. Do you think you would have decided to sign with Zuffa instead of Strikeforce?
I think that I would probably pick Zuffa because that’s the big show, you know?
So she really wants to fight on the big stage. This is my take on it. The only big fight for Carano right now is Cyborg Santos. Santos is signed with Strikeforce so that fight has to take place under that banner if it's going to happen in the next year or so. Carano does have value and can get more money now than she was making under the EliteXC banner. I see her wanting to get paid a little more now and then taking the Cyborg fight. If she wins that fight and then maybe one more or so, then once that contact is up she'll have A LOT of leverage when it comes time to talk with the UFC again. The statement above tells me that she wants to fight on the big stage, and she wants to get paid handsomely to do it as well. What's your take on it?
