In our pursuit to bring you more and more North Carolina MMA information, MMA4Real was able to catch up with Jason "Hitman" Wiggins. Jason is currently the Ring of Chaos lightweight champ, as well as the Mid-Atlantic Elite Fight League welterweight champ. Jason sat down with us via email to speak on his background, North Carolina MMA, and his career going forward.
Kelvin Hunt-Jason, tell us a little about yourself and how you got into MMA?
Jason Wiggins-A little about myself, well I am a 29-year-old professional mma fighter with a record of 9-8. I have 3 super kids ages 11, 9, and 4 and they are the reason I wake up everyday. I live in Wilmington, NC and Hickory, NC depending on where I am training at for a fight! I have been a professional fighter for going on 14 years starting with kickboxing and moving to MMA. I have a black belt in Taekwondo and also Tangsudo and held several national titles in kickboxing. I now study BJJ and the art of mixed martial arts. I recently quit my executive level job and have committed my life to fighting and training MMA where I will be one of the top fighters. So keep your eyes open for what’s to come!
Kelvin Hunt-Oh wow, that's a big committment. How are you feeling physically and mentally?
Jason Wiggins-Physically- I feel great, I’m back fighting at 155 and feeling stronger, faster, and bigger than ever.
Mentally- well I have always been crazy and a little on the wild side. So I guess we will leave it at that! The medicine helps control this....lmao
Kelvin Hunt-Haha! You are coming off a big win, a very quick KO victory winning the Ring Of Chaos lightweight belt. How does it feel to win that title?
Jason Wiggins-Winning this title was a huge boost in confidence, being the first fight back from 12 weeks off from having 5 plates put in my face (thanks to Dustin Chovanic from the IFL and world combat league) I needed my first fight back to be impressive and as you saw from the video. I drop bombs!! I now have 2 yeah I said 2 belts around my waist (literally I were them around the house daily in my underwear) just kidding...I have the lightweight belt for the ring of chaos and the welterweight belt for the mid Atlantic elite fight league.
Kelvin Hunt-Ok, I'll refrain from making Tim Sylivia jokes! You are living in Wilmington, NC right? I grew up west of there. What's the MMA scene like in that area at the moment? Do you think it's going to be big one day?
Jason Wiggins-The MMA scene in Wilmington and Hickory is growing fast with great training schools and great events. Like the one this weekend in Lenoir, NC Elite Cage Championship!
Kelvin Hunt-Where are you doing your training at, and what's a typical day in the life of Jason Wiggins?
Jason Wiggins-I train at several gyms and am fortunate enough to be able to travel all over to train with the top camps. I am in the gym 6 to 10 hours a day now with working in them and training. I am training at the Combat College, Knuckle Up in ATL, Hardcore Gym, and a couple others getting ready for my upcoming fights on the east coast. Then I have plans to go to Arizona to train with my friends Jamie Varner and Jesse Forbes at Arizona Combat Sports for a month before my fight in Canada in JULY. Look for big things to be dropping later in the year also!!
Kelvin Hunt-Cool, make sure you keep us informed. What's your style of fighting?
Jason Wiggins-My fighting style is kickboxing and BJJ with a huge side of showstopper added in. I want to put on a show for the fans, the promoters, and my sponsors are it in the ring, at a press conference, or at weigh ins. I am all about getting into someone’s head Muhammad Ali style.
Kelvin Hunt-Surely, you can't be a MMA junkie like myself. What do you like to do in your spare time? What's your most favorite thing to do?
Jason Wiggins-Spare time...lmao I don’t have any. Between training, kids, training some more, working with other athletes as a nike sparq certified trainer and running my speed school, to all the wild women in my life. I have no time!!! Well the wild women part. I lied about that...but if you know of any... I may have an hour a day to work it out with one!! Lol
Kelvin Hunt-Play On Playa! With you winning this title, what's next for you and is there anyone in particular you want to fight?
Jason Wiggins-What’s next? Whatever and whoever my agent lines up for me. I look forward to beating the brakes off who ever steps in my ring next!
Kelvin Hunt-Oh Snap...TBA better watch out! Any parting thoughts, and anyone out there that you want to thank?
Jason Wiggins-I would like to thank all my sponsors for their support, my Mom and Dad for bringing such a stud into the world, God for all the ability he has given me, my kids for being such a great support crew and motivator (such as my son said this today" dad I’m so glad you did not get your face broke and your ass kicked this weekend.
