Thoughts On The Countdown To UFC 104 Show

New, 5 comments

First of all, I thought the show was very good.  They promoted the Machida/Rua fight as I thought they would, with Shogun coming from adversity to reclaim his spot angle.  Which in actuality was the only angle they would use effectively I think.  I thought they did a good job of showing training footage of both fighters, but primarily with Shogun in this aspect.  He looked really explosive with his kicks and he looked great doing the box jumps which shows that his knee is probably as close to 100% as it can get after two reconstructive surgeries.  I thought the footage they showed of Shogun destroying Rampage Jackson was smart. They also did a good job of humanizing both fighters, showing Machida with the child in the dojo, and Rua talking about winning this fight for his soon to arrive daughter.  I really think this is going to be an all out war.  The smart money is on Machida, but an in-shape Rua could definitely pull off the upset.

The Cain Velasquez vs. Ben Rothwell portion of the show was very good as well.  I thought they did a good job of bringing the casual fan up to speed with just exactly who Rothwell is and why he's getting this opportunity.  I have to give Ben Rothwell madd props here as well.  I mean he's not as big of an underdog as the oddsmakers have him out to be, but he really had me thinkinghe could win this fight convincingly after the countdown went off.  The guy has a decent mic game in regards to hyping up a fight.  I likes that.  However, the guy that I absolutely love is Dave Camarillo.  He just has this deadpan look as he's talking like he dismisses everything that Rothwell just said as non-sense or something.  Camarillo just comes across like Rothwell doesn't even belong in the same arena as Velasquez!  That was great.  I thought they did a good job humanizing Rothwell as well, showing the footage with his daughter.  Of course, the UFC has been doing the same with Velasquez as well with his video blogs that I've been posting the past few days.  I don't know if it's because it's been so long since a UFC event, or the show was that good.  However, I'm ready to watch some MMA this weekend.  Give me your thoughts on the show.
