As we all know Josh Barnett will be fighting Gilbert Yvel and Fedor Emelianenko will be fighting Andrei Arlovksi at the Afflicition 2 card. According to Tom Atencio:
"The winner of Josh Barnett vs. Gilbert Yvel will face the winner of Fedor Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski".
So that's simple enough right? They are going to pretty much hand Barnett a victory, and while Arlovski should be a bit more competitive he's still a pretty big underdog. So we will FINALLY get to see the fight we've(at least I have) been wanting to see since forever in Barnett/Fedor right?
SIKE! There's a pretty good chance that Affliction 2 is going to be their last show. I hope not, in that the fighters there will be out of a job. However, the competition they are going up against with this show is ridiculously steep. Zuffa is screwing Affliction something serious in that their snatch right now is like throwing a hotdog down a hallway. Two UFC cards plus a WEC card the day after the Affliction event in the SAME state? Not to mention the Golden Boy piss shower that Affliction is standing under with the Mosley/Cotto boxing match the same night as the Affliction card. It's going to be virtually impossible for them to turn a profit on this show despite what Atencio says. There is a real possibility that Affliction could lose more money on this show than their first foray into MMA.
Let's take a look at the possible salaries of each fighter on the "Day Of Reckoning" card:
Andrei Arlovski-$500,000(not including a $250,000 win bonus)
Renato "Babalu" Sobral: $60,000(not including $30,000 win bonus)
Matt Lindland: $225,000 (not including $75,000 win bonus)
Vitor Belfort: $70,000 (not including $70,000 win bonus)
Paul Buentello: $60,000 (not including $20,000 win bonus)
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira: $50,000
That's a payroll of over 1.5 million dollars right there, not to mention we are not including the win bonuses with that total or other undisclosed amounts(Fedor is probably making more than 300K). We are also not including the salaries of Gilbert Yvel, Jay Hieron, Dan Lauzon, Chris Horodecki, Sokoudjou, Vladimir Matyushenko, or Mark Hominick. All of whom are veterans of the sport and probably carry a decent prize tag as well. These fighter salaries were gathered from what was reported to the commission for Affliction's first card.
Atencio says the first card did well over 100K PPV buys, but the reports have varied from 50K-100K with none reporting well over 100K. So basically what I'm saying is for everyone(including myself) that's finally thinking Barnett/Emelianenko will happen? Don't hold your breath.
