Lesnar, Dos Santos named coaches for 'The Ultimate Fighter 13'

As first posted on Twitter by MMAForReal.com, the UFC has named heavyweights Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos as the opposing coaches for the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter," a show which will feature exclusively welterweight fighters.

The two will meet following the season (in June, according to UFC president Dana White on Tuesday's "Fight for the Troops" media call) in a three-round fight with the winner facing UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez at a later date.

The show is scheduled to start March 30 on Spike TV.

Dos Santos was scheduled to face Velasquez for the title early this year before a shoulder injury forced Velasquez to the sidelines for an undetermined amount of time.

Lesnar is coming off a first-round TKO loss to Velasquez at UFC 121 in October. Many questioned his commitment to MMA following the loss, but he is back.

Dos Santos last competed in August, taking home a unanimous decision from Roy Nelson at UFC 117.

Good stuff

But the lack of an interim title is a little weak. I understand that it’s not “the real belt”, but Velasquez isn’t exactly coming back in July, he’s probably coming back more like LATE 2011 or early 2012. But hey, number one contendership is more or less the interim title.

As far as Lenar goes, I wonder what this will mean if he wins. Certainly, I feel that he’ll be an underdog in the fight with JDS, but if he wins I don’t see what he has to offer Velasquez the second time around.

You know what's really fun? Not being a raving lunatic. Give it a try some time, you might just like it!

hmm

JDS is going to KTFO Lesnar…if by chance Lesnar can get past JDS….I’m sure he’d fight a much more conservative fight against Cain….probably same outcome though…I’d be interested in seeing a re-match though….I surely can’t wait for JDS/Cain

Agreed

I just don’t see any way that a Lesnar/Velasquez would go any different, you know? Velasquez is too fast for him, like the heavyweight equivalent of Sylvester and Tweetybird.

Interesting. I like those two deciding a challenger for Velasquez when he’s ready to go later in the year after the shoulder surgery rehab. At the end of the day, the fans have a lot to look forward to in MMA’s heavyweight division:

- A three man tourney with three heavyweights that are ranked in the top 5 in the world.
- An eight man tourney wih four heavyweights that are ranked in the top 10 in the world.

2011 should have some really interesting developments.

Is JDS’ English up for the task?

What, his voice isn’t girly and weird?

He still leans pretty heavy on Ed “The Weasel” Soares to translate in post-fight interviews – otherwise limited to “I love insert name of city here!”

JDS's English

is pretty good….if Big Nog can pull off being a coach….JDS can.

Subtitles, baby.

Bisping got ’em, Nog got ’em, so will Dos Santos.

But I did like how after his last fight, JDS went out of his way to shut down Soares from translating for him. Shows confidence in his own abilities, at the very least.

I don’t know what is going on with the UFC these days but they’re really starting to lose me with some of these fights that they’re booking. This fight makes zero sense to me right now, instead of getting Mir vs. Dos Santos and Brock vs. Nelson which are natural match ups to make. We get Brock thrown into a number 1 contender fight and put on TUF with a guy who has no personality and the UFC is throwing away 2 more high profile matches since when did SF start booking the UFC HW division smfh.

Nelson can’t fight with contract issues and Mir went life and death with a Filipovic that is less offensive than Lesnar in the fetal position.

The pairing makes perfect sense, they’re using Lesnars commercial viability to create some of JDS’s own for his “expected” title run against Velasquez.

This only gets iffy if Lesnar is to get by JDS, but fuggit if the man can do that then give him a shot at redemption is my opinion, he’ll surely have earned it….

Absolutely with you, RNP.

This is more about JDS than it is about Lensar. Lesnar’s a known commodity with huge amounts of star power dripping off him. They’re hoping Dos Santos does enough to transfer some of that star power and make him a legitimate draw in his own right.

Big Nog really won a lot of people over with his attitude on TUF, being so positive and supportive. Even if JDS can just do something like that (win people over on his attitude and demeanor), then he’ll be a far more commercially viable commodity than he is today.

And yeah, if Brock beats JDS, what else is there for him to prove in the UFC’s HW division? You could give him punishment-for-losing-the-strap fights, like Roy Nelson/Cro Cop, but I doubt many people would expect Big Country or Mirko to give him a serious run for his money. He’s still at the top of that division, so winning over presumptive #1 contender JDS would be pretty much all there is left to accomplish before a shot a redemption.

you gotta look at it from this perspective…

Having Brock on TUF assures good ratings…#1…also…gets JDS GREAT exposure for when he challenges for the belt against Cain…because…frankly…..Mir nor Nelson have a shot in hell at beating Cain…having JDS/Brock on TUF also gives fans an idea of what the future holds while Cain is out with the injury….you know the winner of this one will fight him next…

Mir vs. JDS won’t sell tickets….of course Lesnar will no matter who he faces…but if Nelson beat him…that would look pretty bad…and again…Nelson has already lost to JDS…so he wouldn’t deserve to fight Cain

There are several leaps there that I don’t agree with but let’s stay with the Brock on TUF stuff, if they wanted him badly they could have easily paired him up with Nelson on the show and gotten even bigger ratings. I don’t see Brock vs. Dos Santos as must see tv, it’s probably one of the least interesting pairings they’ve ever had which is part 1 of why I don’t like it.

Second if Mir can sell a fight with Kongo, he can do wonders for JDS again you could have easily put Mir and Dos Santos on TUF and that would be must see tv mostly because Mir knows how to play the game. You can easily use the revenge angle from him beating Nog to push how the fight is personal and Mir’s natural heel instincts will come out during the shows he’ll make people root for Junior to smash him.

There you have 2 match ups that make sense in everyway possible, Brock vs. Dos Santos on TUF doesn’t and screams more like something SF would do not the UFC.

ehh..doubtful Nelson brings anything to the table ratings wise…from a ratings standpoint…Brock takes that all by himself..

I wouldn’t consider you a casual fan either…this show is catered to casual viewers for the most part…

While Mir can sell a fight…he’s not even in the same galaxy as Lesnar in regards to ratings or PPV buys for that matter

The goal of the show is ratings #1 and then secondly to promote a fight between Lesnar/JDS….JDS needs the exposure(being on TUF every week amongst millions of eyeballs accomplishes that) and a win for JDS over Lesnar would be huge for his career…which would then set up the eventual title fight of JDS/Cain…

If you want to get technical about it in regards to rankings….Lesnar the former champion…who destroyed Frank Mir…JDS shouldn’t dominate Roy Nelson…then drop down to fight Frank Mir for the right to fight Cain….fighting Lesnar makes more sense in that regard as well

They’re doing Lesnar vs JDS because one way or another you’ve got a strong contender coming off of it. Dos Santos will probably win, and with Lesnar playing the foil for all those weeks of TV, he’s going to go from a guy that internet people talk about, to a mainstream contender with real skills.

Mir would work, but does anyone really care about him anymore? Yeah, the guy got a lot of heat with Lesnar, but with his stinker of a match with Cro Cop coupled with him coming out after every fight saying “yeah, I just did it for the camera” why would anyone take him seriously? Not to mention the fact that whenever he’s against someone who can hit, he gets clubbed like a baby seal. Lesnar might not be the best contender, but he’s probably #2 behind Dos Santos in terms of championship material, not to mention commercial viability.

Because all Mir has to do is open is mouth and tons of butthurt fanboys will react to everything he does let’s not confuse things here. I know people love to try and bury Mir after every fight but he finished CC who can hit and was never in trouble in the fight.

Come on, man. That fight with Cro Cop was horrendous. Mir had the only KO on the card and Dana didn’t even give him the KO bonus. You shouldn’t be rewarded for having an absolute garbage fight like that.

You mean like how there are all sorts of butthurt fanboys since “that WWE guy” got put on TUF?

Also, please try to use the reply function, it makes it a LOT easier to follow a conversation.

Riding the horse before it dies IMO

I do like how some folks on several message boards said I was wrong in saying Brock is punch shy after his fight with Randy, but I guess now, everyone knows he is not about to deal with getting hit very well at all. For sure Dana sees it, and figures, make the money on him while he can. If he beats JDS, he will stick around for one more against Cain (which will go the same as the first fight). If JDS does what I suspect he will (use that big head like a pinata) Brock is most likely finished with MMA, but….Dana will have made a great return off a guy who is for all intensive purposes just about done with fighting.

From a “credibility” point of view, its insulting for Brock to coach, but as with other guys, his staff is going to be doing the coaching, and reality is, that show has not a whole lot to do with credibility anyway, and more to do with good tv/ratings. From a ratings view, its gold, Dana knows it, but does frustrate folks with his insistence Brock is more than qualified as a coach (he is not).

by oggsmash on Jan 15, 2011 10:24 AM EST reply actions

Exactly. And with some of the fighters on this show in recent seasons, I don’t think “credibility” is something people need to be complaining about. This show is a shell of its former self.

Some people complain for the sake of complaining.
