Yep

Remember that one time that he had a fight at 185 in the UFC? Yeah, me either. Last fight at 185 was TWENTY MONTHS AGO. So yeah, the lesson here is that KO’ng Lindland and Terry Martin gets you a sweet-ass ranking years later.

Really can't argue with that.

Good call, you should have added a fuck you Matt to the end of your post.

To be fair he's not the only one doing it

I’m still astonished that despite the man being named #1 contender PURELY for business reasons, that people ranked him so high. True, he absolutely SMOKED Lindland, but those two wins don’t get a guy that high up, in my opinion. Personally, I think he should’ve been de-ranked due to inactivity some time ago.

…is not a top ten. Maybe top 15.

I also feel like it’s cheating to put Lombard in the top ten. He hasn’t fought anyone to push him, but he is really amazing to watch.

I kind of like the Leben ranking.

MW isn’t all that deep outside of the top five, and Leben’s got a ridiculous chin. I have a hard time seeing Maia beating him, and I’m a pretty big Maia fan. Maia’s the better fighter, but in that matchup I just don’t know.

I think the ranking is justified.

Maia v. Leben — are you kidding? I like Leben and I think he’s got a puncher’s chance a la Marquardt, but Maia would take that fight. Not to mention, Maia, where you can make the argument that he should/could go down to welterweight, has only been defeated twice — once by the champ and the other by the number one contender. Leben on the other hand has been beaten by guys who didn’t even make this top ten list.

Maia's a much better fighter.

But if they fought, I don’t see Leben going to the ground with him, and I don’t see Maia doing much to hurt Leben on the feet.

Standing up, I agree with you, however, Maia is a judo black belt and sexyama showed us all that Leben can’t defend himself against a judo throw. On the ground, it’s all Maia. I think Maia would be able to get Leben to tap fast, too.

Right, and not to belabor the point,

but I just don’t see (at this exact moment) Maia being able to take him down with any authority, which is what he would need to do, since everyone in the MMA world knows you don’t want to roll around with Maia. If Maia takes further steps like he has taken since his title shot against Anderson to improve his wrestling, and he fought Leben next, I’d actually say Maia should be able to demolish him.

On the ground, it’s a slaughter for Maia. Any position, he subs him within a couple of minutes.

On the feet, I think Leben’s got a decisive advantage in power and a 60:40 type advantage in technique, with the main difference being his chin.

Hector Lombard ?

I’m surprised that he’s not getting more love. Joe Silva thinks highly of him. Unlike Leben he beats guys he’s supposed to beat.

Lombard has never really been tested. Who’s been his toughest opponent? Let’s keep it real. While he’s a great mma fighter, we’ll never know how great he truly is until he fights for an org. with better competition for him. I’d love to see him in the UFC.

Agreed

And that’s why he’ll never go higher than 10 on my ballot until that changes.

Only reason Lombard cracks the top 10

is because dudes are either getting hurt, leaving the weightclass, or guys on the fringe lose. Middleweight is a RANCID division.

Every time there is a decent guy outside the UFC, I hear this argument. Then I remember Jake Shields handling Dan Henderson and I think about the possibilities. I’m just saying.

And by the way,

that is one busted-ass Anderson in the picture. Pitter patter punches, my ass.
