2010: The Year of the Non-Dominant UFC Champion?
We are more than half way through with the year 2010 (time flies!) and we have seen every UFC title defended within the last year or so. In that time frame, we've seen Lyoto Machida dethroned brutally in the first round, BJ Penn ousted as lightweight champion, Brock Lesnar on the brink of a one-sided beatdown, Anderson Silva picked apart and beaten for nearly five rounds by Chael Sonnen, and Georges St. Pierre's stock to some fans dropping due to his conservative style. At the end of 2009, most people felt the only belts that were somewhat in danger of changing hands in the near future were the light heavyweight and heavyweight (mostly due to Brock's illness and long layoff). Now, we have seen some of the most dramatic UFC title fights in recent history. It's a true testament to the evolution of mixed martial arts that such elite fighters as Anderson Silva, BJ Penn, and to a lesser extent Georges St. Pierre are being pushed to their limits and forced to use every weapon in their arsenal to get by their opposition. The question, as we move forward after what was a stellar UFC 117 card and main event, is whether or not a dominant champion will exist again in the UFC?
In my humble opinion, the fact that more and more fighters are closing the gap as far as skills will prove that on any given night, there truly is no definitive dominant fighter, as the style differential between mixed martial artists is growing slimmer and slimmer. Not to mention, the intricate gameplans laid out by trainers and coaches have proven that weaknesses can be subsided and strengths can be amplified. Think of this, in a matter of months we have seen pound for pound mainstays either pushed into a panic mode not seldom seen (Anderson Silva), proven to be careless and beaten (Fedor Emelianenko), or simply out gameplanned (BJ Penn). Now that Shane Carwin proved Brock Lesnar is very hittable, will future opponents expose this? With Shogun Rua's knees in such bad shape, will future opponents be able to exploit his reoccurring injuries? Is Frankie Edgar simply too small in the lightweight division to have a worthwhile run? Even after dominating them, will GSP have what it takes to replicate his strategy against upcoming contenders Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch? With so many guys stepping up at their opportunities, it will be an extremely interesting few years in every division Zuffa has under their umbrella (maybe excluding the featherweight division) and the year of the dominant champion seems to be coming to an abrupt end. So as you ponder the future, do you MMA4Realers think their will be a current champion that remains at that spot this time next year?

This is what i think will happen.
Frankie will lose his belt against BJ Penn.
GSP will remain title holder.
I know people will disagree but i think Anderson will keep his belt also.
Shogun will defend his title against Rashad
Although i don’t want this too happen i think that Brock could lose his belt.
What does everyone think?

Arm Triangle possibly the most underrated submission in MMA as proven by Brock Lesnar
I pretty much agree, though I’d rather BJ move up to welterweight so we don’t have to see a bunch of rematches with him and the top guys

Yeh true but i really don't see BJ getting much success at welterweight now with GSP being rediculously good at the moment.

Ben Henderson?

BJ would nuke Benderson
I throw raps that attack like the Japs on Pearl Harbor/MC's be out like bank robbers/Fleeing the scene, to be a sole survivor/DJ the getaway driver/Tried to dip but he dive, I socialize on vocal vibes/On tracks stabbed up with razor sharp knives
maybe
age is catching up with him though i reckon, plus Henderson is undefeated in touching 4yrs now…whilst that is down to strength of opposition, i cant help but feel people are overlooking him somewhat. Dude is as tough as nails and has excellent sub defense… i quite possibly am over rating him though so fair enough.

Notes,
- BJ Penn doesn’t really care for game plans. He just wants to scrap.
- I totally agree, styles makes fights because I’m sure Demian Maia is smiling and confused saying to himself . . . what the FLYING F*!@?! The MMA Math between Sonnen, Maia, Marquardt looks interesting.
- Maynard is looking at Frankie Edgar, thinking WTFF!?!
End note, it is interesting how not too long ago, the question was how dominant champions may hurt the UFC. After two dominant UFC champions in Brock Lesnar and Anderson Silva show serious vulnerability only to pull off come from behind victories using jiu-jitsu in consecutive cards. The Gracies are smiling and the UFC wins.
Getting his ass beat for 23 minutes was the best thing that could happen for Anderson Silva. I just don’t know how getting out punched standing will help him in the future. Now everybody thinks they can beat Mike Tyson – I’m looking at other great wrestlers and grapplers with a top game like GSP, Fitch, and Jake Shields who will definitely give Silva many problems. I just doubt they’ll be able to finish him.

Frankie Edgar's time is VERY limited.
See:
- BJ Penn, who he may very well defeat again.
- Kenny Florian can simply find a way to win.
- Gray Maynard is the bully.

i hope BJ loses
i want to see K-Flo hold that strap even if he loses it in his first defense to BJ…
though i’d think he’d fair better if they fought again

GSP, Aldo, and Silva
Should retain their straps.

- Let Aldo win a few before we award him automatic victories. This is MMA, anything can happen. Forrest Griffin and Chael Sonnen can outstrike Silva in the CompuStrike stats but yet, lose.
- I feel sorry if GSP doesn’t “finish” Koscheck. The backlash will be horrible and pretty ridiculous.
- Silva, now that he’s getting old and his slower than Roy Jones Jr., blah, blah, blah. Wouldn’t it become cool if he begins to win via crazy comeback?

He’ll be truly tested once he gets to 155 and fast, dominant wrestlers can get to him. Mike Brown is slow as hell and Faber is a legit 135er

for sure
i was just talking 145, but i mean at 155 id still fancy him to step it up…

I’m just saying Aldo defeating the Anvil is not certain.
But since you came at me with the Morgan Freeman argument, then I have to retract my previous statement.
HA!!

Edgar is the only one of the bunch with no hope of retaining the strap.
Aldo and GSP are all but guaranteed to keep their titles.
Brock has a very good chance of retaining.
With Shogun it depends solely on his health, if he has to face a healthy Machida at anything less than 100% he is going to lose.
Anderson just took out his worst style matchup so barring a fluke ko from Vitor he will retain.
And nobody really gives a damn about Bendo while the UFC also features a LW division. The WEC LW division is sort of like the special olympics, yeah they go through the motions but in your heart you know its just a bunch of tards.
