What's next for Jon Jones?
After crushing Vladimir Matyushenko last night at UFC on Versus 2 in San Diego, Calif., it's almost a consensus that Jon Jones needs a step up in competition.
So, that leaves us trying to figure out who he should face. Here's a list of candidates to be the next sacrificial lamb opponent for Jones.
Forrest Griffin — Griffin seems to be the leading candidate to fight Jones next. He is a solid fighter, a name draw and very capable of giving Jones a test. He brings stout leg kicks to the table and a solid ground game off his back, both things Jones has yet to have to deal with. It's likely he wouldn't finish Jones with punches, but would give Jones more of a test. Griffin also is a very large light-heavyweight and Jones has yet to deal with someone as big as he is. Still, Griffin is not that athletic, so fighting Griffin might not be the type of test Jones needs at this point, but everything given, it's the fight that makes the most sense.
Thiago Silva — Silva had to pull out of his UFC 117 fight with an injury, so the timing lines up for him to fight Jones in his next fight if that's the direction Joe Silva and Dana White want to go. Silva brings a solid striking game (but unlike Griffin, he brings it with power) to the table, and that's certainly something Jones hasn't faced. Although Silva would bring Jones more of a challenge on the feet, Jones would be too big for Silva on the ground, so it's almost the opposite of Griffin. Silva probably would be the better test at this point, but a win against Silva doesn't mean much to the average fan, and the goal here is to make Jones a bigger star.
Tito Ortiz — Obviously this fight would not be competitive whatsoever. Ortiz brings nothing to the game in this day and age that would give Jones even the slightest problem. This fight would be practical from the standpoint that Ortiz has quite the following (both lovers and haters) and that would help make Jones into a bigger star after he destroyed Ortiz. This would be like a Ortiz/Ken Shamrock fight. Of course, Ortiz would have to get past Matt Hamill to make this fight happen, although if Hamill happens to go down with an injury and has to pull out of the fight, Jon Jones has to be the No. 1 fighter to call on Joe Silva's list.
Matt Hamill — Yes, this is a rematch, but it certainly makes sense. Jones was dominating Hamill before being disqualified for using illegal elbows. He seriously hurt Hamill. This is the same scenario as Ortiz. If Ortiz has to pull out, Jones has to get the call. And if Hamill beats Ortiz, a Jones-Hamill rematch makes sense, but it's certainly not a fight I'd go to unless all other options (see the three people above) were exhausted.

Randy Couture
Still held in high regard and probably seen as a contender by casuals. It’d give Jon Jones the “rub”, to use wrestling parlance. This could be a great co-main on the big year-end extravaganza, or even a headliner for a numbered card on Spike (make up UFC 112 to the fans, Dana!)
I throw raps that attack like the Japs on Pearl Harbor/MC's be out like bank robbers/Fleeing the scene, to be a sole survivor/DJ the getaway driver/Tried to dip but he dive, I socialize on vocal vibes/On tracks stabbed up with razor sharp knives
that’d be interesting, much rather see that than Couture be rewarded for calling out Machida and Shogun…f**k that.

It’ll never happen. The UFC has a plan for Randy. They want him to beat Toney, then they’re going to put him in another fight with a legit fighter that favors him stylisticly to give him some credit, and if he wins that, they’re going to give him his title shot so he can retire.
Jon Jones doesn’t fit into that plan whatsoever. They’re not going to send Randy in to get beat up until his goodbye title fight.

I really like Tito for it
Obviously him getting smashed is a big draw for me, but it’s the lowest risk of anyone, and high reward. I don’t think Griffin or Hamill have anything for him either, but Tito gets people to pay attention, and with his big mouth he’s the perfect foil.

I don't think Tito takes that fight
Maybe he beats Hamill and takes one more “money fight”, but I think Tito is savvy enough to avoid Jones at all costs

Probably
Although if he buys into his own hype.. well, you never know.

Always a possibility with Tito

No one, who isnt top end
I feel I already went through this once, with Roger Huerta, lets just go ahead and give jones some guys to fight who are not ideal matches for him (so far, lets face it, he has fought guys who both IRL and on paper are perfect matches for him) and test him out. Wec and smaller orgs are for building up, the UFC is for toeing the line, time to test him.
Rampage, I think, is a perfect litmus test.
I was thinking Rampage based on the fact that he has excellent takedown defense and may be the only person at LHW as strong as Jones

God, why do we have to build Jon Jones with stylistic matchups that favor him? The dude already has more hype than a young Vitor Belfort and Brandon Vera combined. He doesn’t need a “name” to put him over at this time – he’s already been put over.
He needs to be put in with someone who can test him at this time. Someone who can really push him. If you just keep putting him in with guys he can smash within the first round, you’re going to end up in a situation where he goes into a title fight having never been pushed before in a fight, and he’s going to have a very fast and brutal reality check. What’s going to happen if you feed him Tito Ortiz and Rich Franklin (for example), and he smashes them both in 2 minutes no problem, then he winds up in there with Shogun? He takes Shogun down, posts his arm and immediatley gets caught in an armbar. How’s he going to react? He’ll be in a title fight and he’ll have never been put in that situation before. Suddenly he’ll have to go technique for technique with a guy who knows a hell of a lot more than he does about fighting. What’s Jones going to do when he just can’t hulk smash a guy in 2 minutes? When he just can’t toss them around and treat them like a child?
It’d probably be a good idea to put him in with some guys who can test him out first, instead of just giving him “names” to build him. Put him in with some tough stylistic matchups. Otherwise, he’s going to waltz into a title fight, and the sound of his bandwagon crashing when he loses is going to be deafening.
