WEC 50 Aftermath: Is Dominick Cruz a Top-5 Pound-for-Pound Fighter?
Last night we watched Dominick Cruz retain his Bantamweight title by defeating Joseph Benavidez via split decision at WEC 50. The last time the Bantamweight title was successfully defended was a little more than 16 months ago. The belt changed hands three times in just over 16 months before it was defended. That is not what I would call a stable division. Only recently has the WEC embraced the Bantamweight division and we are beginning to find out who the best Bantamweights are.
I would like to think that the WEC's Bantamweight division is like the UFC's Heavyweight division from 1997-99. The fighters in the Bantamweight division are so young and inexperienced compared to fighters at higher weight classes. It is difficult to find fights at Bantamweight across the U.S. The pool of talent at Bantamweight is going to be far less than all other weight classes. Therefore to some degree we are going to get a watered-down product at Bantamweight.
Bantamweight's first and only star was/is Miguel Torres, even though he has never truly beaten a elite fighter. Yet MMA web sites skyrocketed him to their pound-for-pound rankings. Torres' biggest win was against
Yoshiro Maeda (26-9). How can you put someone on your pound-for-pound list when they don't fight elite competition? It befuddles me to think of why anyone would put a Bantamweight in there pound for pound rankings.
Which leads me to this tweet from Josh Gross:
RT @Jon_Anik Dominick Cruz needs some Top 10 P4P consideration. Dude is slick. ... No. 5 on my list.GSP, Silva, Aldo, Rua, Cruz
I like and respect Josh Gross, but I disagree. Is Josh Gross really going to try and convince me and the masses that Charlie Valencia, Ian McCall, Ivan Lopez, Joseph Benavidez x2, and Brian Bowles at Bantamweight is a top 5 pound-for-pound résumé!? I would much rather see Jon Fitch or Jake Shields take the place of Cruz. Both of those fighters have résumés for a pound-for-pound list. Frankly, I am semi-shocked Cruz would get top-10 pound-for-pound love.
I can only assume this is the "what have you done for me lately" culture rearing its ugly head. We have yet to see an elite fighter in the Bantamweight division. Maybe Cruz is it, but he hasn't turned into that fighter yet. Just like Cruz, Bantamweight is still young and needs the time to grow and develop. When Bantamweight has matured and obtains depth we will find out if Cruz is really pound-for-pound worthy.

Seriously wheres the fucking traffic?
EVeezy maybe y’all should consider doing an article about how easy it’s gonna be for Manny to kick Jose Aldo’s ass or how Brock Lesnar is actually Frank Mir’s long lost brother.

Right now I am sitting on a Dan Henderson affair article among other things…;) I’m getting on the ball next week. More info than you could possibly want to know. Plus I can’t speak for everyone, but I don’t like rehashing subjects 75 other blogs have already talked about.

Nice,
We need a Zoila sex tape to liven things up if you ask me. I mean why not Lawrence Fishbornes daughter did it.

next.
Personally I don’t know why a P4P list goes further than #3 or #5.
Are you #1, #2 or #3? What you’re #6 on the P4P, who cares?
Cruz? P4P??? Next.

VEe is ANIMated!
I can only assume this is the “what have you done for me lately” culture rearing its ugly head.
Kinda subscribe to the “what have you done for me lately” culture…
But WHAT exactly has Cruz really done for me lately? Not enough for a top 5 P4P listing, but then again P4P grows increasingly uninteresting.
"I don't care, hit him with your groin!"
Agreed
Kind of felt stupid for writing it because I could care less about P4P. That said putting Cruz in your top 5 is dumb. lol

I mean, I used to like pairing up great fighters in fantasy matches across weight classes, shrink-ray style. But P4P takes up WAAAAAAAAAAY too much of the discourse, and seeing people get butthurt to the point of not being able to adhere to basic forum rules such as “only call someone a fucktard when you can give a proper explanation as to why someone is a fucktard”, “Disclaimer: the opinions expressed here are OPINIONS” & “don’t shoot up your school because Fedor just lost” I grow weary of it all…
"I don't care, hit him with your groin!"
Nah, he's in that 8-10 range
Anderson Silva
GSP
Shogun
Fedor
BJ Penn
Aldo
I throw raps that attack like the Japs on Pearl Harbor/MC's be out like bank robbers/Fleeing the scene, to be a sole survivor/DJ the getaway driver/Tried to dip but he dive, I socialize on vocal vibes/On tracks stabbed up with razor sharp knives
I don't see a reason to discount Cruz
But I don’t see a reason to rocket him into any kind of P4P rankings. Is he good at bantamweight? Well, from what we’ve seen of him, sure, but so what? It’s not exactly like he’s tearing up legends of the sport.. which isn’t surprising considering the weightclass. I mean, usually P4P rankings are held for fighters that have tenure, and big wins in their career. Anderson Silva? Check. GSP? Check. Fedor? Check. Lesnar? Nope. Cruz? Why even bother asking.
You know what's really fun? Not being a raving lunatic. Give it a try some time, you might just like it!
