Alan Belcher's Career in Jeopardy Following Emergency Eye Surgery

MONTREAL- MAY 8: Alan Belcher (R) holds on to Patrick Cote in their middleweight bout at UFC 113 at Bell Centre on May 8, 2010 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

After pulling out of a scheduled bout with Demian Maia, the news coming from Alan Belcher post-eye surgery isn't optimistic:

"Worst case is I don't get any better than this and I'm only working with one eye and then I probably don't want to risk fighting again with only one eye, cause if I lose that one, then I'm going to be blind," Belcher said via Skype (video of the interview with Purefight is below). "So it's just -- I'm not even really thinking about fighting right now. I'm just going to wait a couple months and see where I'm at. It's disappointing cause I was on a roll and getting close to a title [shot]."

"[The doctor] says definitely it's not going to get better to the same, but at best, it's going to be something like 20/40, 20/60 vision," Belcher said. "And we could maybe do some more surgeries, laser, on the retina to flatten it out to get rid of the distortedness. Maybe some on my lens to get lasiks cause I'm like going to be really nearsighted where I can't see anything far away and when it gets close I can almost see it. There's probably going to be more surgeries, probably, even in the best case scenario."

Belcher was scheduled to headline UFC Fight Night 22 against Demian Maia on Sept. 15 and a win over the former No. 1 contender would have conceivably put Belcher in the middleweight title mix. Belcher pulled out of the fight the first of August.

Belcher lost his vision in his right eye all of a sudden while training in Brazil and and returned to the U.S. soon after for emergency surgery. A detached retina occurs when the inner layer of the retina, a thin membrane of nerve tissue, separates from the wall of the eye and according to Belcher, the detached retina might have been from tears in his retina from "getting hit in the head probably in training" and the pressure on the airplane might have worsened his condition.

It's a tragic story, especially considering how Belcher (16-6, 7-4 UFC) has made a major push as a contender in the UFC's Middleweight division over the past two years. During that time, he's gone 4-1 with the lone loss a narrow split-decision against Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 100. A win over Maia likely would have cemented has status as a contender. It's been a long climb for Belcher, who made his UFC debut some four years ago at the age of 22. Here's to hoping Belcher can recover and get back in the Octagon one day soon.

This.

And if I was to become coldblooded and leave aside the more important human story, its a division that can ill afford to lose one of its rising stars…its shallow enough

Agreed

Belcher was a really fresh-face in the UFC top 10, and I think he was no more than two fights away from contendership. The way I could’ve seen it shaping up, if he’d beaten Maia (which is no easy feat) he could’ve taken on a Wanderlei/Leben winner for #1 contender after Sonnen and Belfort.

Man, a Wanderlei/Belcher #1 contender fight would’ve been awesome.

I throw raps that attack like the Japs on Pearl Harbor/MC's be out like bank robbers/Fleeing the scene, to be a sole survivor/DJ the getaway driver/Tried to dip but he dive, I socialize on vocal vibes/On tracks stabbed up with razor sharp knives
