Werdum out until 2011, Coker says

Strikeforce heavyweight Fabricio Werdum will be out until January, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told MMAJunkie.com on Monday.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker today confirmed to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the heavyweight fighter will be on the bench until January 2011. As a result, no opponent has been set for his return.

"The date is really to be determined because Fabricio is not going to fight until the beginning of next year, so he's going to be sidelined for the next five months," Coker said.

Werdum (14-4-1 MMA, 3-0 SF) said this past month that he intends to take the rest of 2010 off after undergoing a much-needed surgery on his elbow.

The fighter said he had repeatedly put the surgery off over a two-year period, and worried that it could affect future fights, he finally opted to get it done.

Manager Richard Wilner could not be reached to verify whether the elbow surgery prompted the layoff, though he recently told MMAFighting.com that Werdum might not need to go under the knife, and that if he did, the layoff would be brief.

Werdum, of course, is coming off the biggest win of his career, a first-round submission of Fedor Emelianenko in June.

if rashad can do it why cant fedor?

I like the feeling of hunting down what I feed my family. If there’s a beast out there capable of hunting down Brock Lesnar, he would do it and make me the trophy on his den wall. But the laws of nature dictate that I’m going to be the one who goes into the wild and comes home with the evening’s bounty. - The #1 ranked HW in the world...

As long as Emelianenko extends his contract with Strikeforce, that fight is a possibility in 2011. If not………
