UFC on Versus 2 Results: Ellenberger's GNP shuts Howard's eye, forces stoppage
John Howard came into his UFC on Versus 2 welterweight bout with Jake Ellenberger with a perfect 4-0 record in the UFC. Many thought Howard was lucky to have that record.
Sunday, Howard was game and landed some hard shots, but had his left eye balloon up because of Ellenberger's ground-and-pound, forcing the doctor to stop the bout midway through the third round. The time was 2:21.
The two traded vicious shots early. Ellenberger pushes Howard up against the cage. He tries a takedown, doesn't get it, and pushes him back against the fence. Referee Herb Dean breaks them apart. Howard misses all three punches in a three-punch combo and Ellenberger gets him to the ground in full guard. Not much happening and we get another break with about a minute left. Jab lands for Ellenberger. Another. Howard comes lunging in and gets taken down again, this time into half-guard with 35 seconds left. Ellenberger with some shots as the round comes to an end.
Hard high kick lands early for Howard and staggers Ellenberger. Howard with a punch but he's too wild and Ellenberger takes him down. Half-guard now and Ellenberger with some elbows. Howard gains full guard and Dean tells Ellenberger to work. Ellenberger lands some shot elbows. Ellenberger stands and comes down with a shot. He tries another but misses and Howard uses it to stand. Howard all over Ellenberger now but again, he's too wild and gets taken down. Huge elbow by Ellenberger to Howard's swollen left eye. Another round in the books.
Third round begins and Howard's left eye is almost completely swollen shut. Howard is going for broke and he drills Ellenberger with a flying knee. Ellenberger survives it. Howard goes for a takedown but can't get it. Ellenberger with a two punch combo into a nice double-leg. Dean stands them up again and calls in for the doctor to look at Howard's eye and that's it.
