MMA For Real Movie Review: Predators

Predators-affiche-poster-2010_medium

via i405.photobucket.com

Now, you’re probably thinking "This is an MMA site. Why am I reading a review of Robert Rodriguez’s great new sci-fi action flick Predators here?"

Well, because it co-stars everyone’s favorite sambo practitioner turned MMA fighter turner actor. No, not Fedor you dumb ass- Oleg Taktarov, one of the toughest men to ever compete in the no holds barred days of MMA. Best known to MMA fans for his classic wars with Tank Abbott and Dan Severn, he has now transitioned into acting. He’s been in several films, most notably a feature role in the Robert DeNiro movie 15 Minutes, a movie that was almost as terrible as Oleg’s acting was.

But surprisingly Oleg shines in Predators, and arguably gives the strongest performance of the film. Playing Nikolai, a Russian commando wielding a mini-gun (ala Jesse Ventura in the original Predator film), Oleg steals the show from star Adrian Brody, who was cast in the role of Royce, the lead character tough guy. Brody ultimately does a fine job, but somehow he just isn’t as believable in his part as Oleg. You can believe that Oleg is just this mini-gun toting Russian commando who just wants to kill these frigging Predators so he can get back to mother Russia and see his two kids. You can’t really buy into Adrian Brody being this Black Ops, cold blooded, take no prisoners killer. The rest of the cast is solid- Alice Braga (who was also in Red Belt), Topher Grace, and Danny Trejo. Lawrence Fishburne also has a small part in the film.

The story itself is pretty good. Rodriguez made a wise move by avoiding the mistakes made by the later Predator films, and essentially made a movie based on the best parts of the original 1987 film. The movie actually references the original film several times, both directly and indirectly along with several scenes that hearken back to the classic Schwarzenegger film. Rodriguez did well not to do a remake of the original film, but to make a new film with a totally new plot while still capturing the same feel and spirit as the original that we all know and love. The plot is pretty straight forward, has one or two small twists and surprises to keep you interested, and plenty of fantastic action. The special effects are very good as well.

The only thing to really complain about is Adrian Brody cast as a tough guy in the lead, when that part should have been given to someone a little more believable- someone like Bruce Willis, perhaps. But the rest of the cast, including Oleg Taktarov and his understated acting, more than make up for it. This is definitely a movie worth checking out, and I think most MMA fans will enjoy it.

Four out of five stars for Robert Rodriguez’s Predators.

Good stuff, man. Taktarov was always fun to watch and I’d been wondering whether this movie was worth paying to see. Thanks!

It’s worth it.It’s not going to win any Academy Awards, but it’s extremely entertaining. If you liked the origanal Arnold film, you’ll like this one as well. They are very much alike,in a lot of different ways.

I will probably see this

But seeing a movie review on an MMA site like this.. kinda reminds me of 5oz running their advertiser spotlights. Kinda irksome.

And although this obviously isn’t some advertisement masquerading as an article (unlike 5oz), it’s not my cup of tea.

Side-note: did you change the way you do comments? I don’t know when it started, but you’re missing spaces after certain punctuation, like .,?

Fair enough. It’s not a pure MMA fanpost. I can dig that. I’ve got one on Lesnar currently brewing up. Hopefully you’ll enjoy that a bit more.

And no, I didn’t change the way I do comments, I just got lazy and forgot. ;~)

i love seeing this review on an mma site.

1. ive been boycotting cable for the summer after going thru hell trying to get hdnet and i had no idea this movie was out.
2. oleg is in it so it’s mma related.
3. well written and informative. 30+ comments already which proves it belongs here…

thanks

Is this one of those things that since the original came out before you were born, Predator has been around “forever”?

Well,Forrest is a lot younger than me,but the origanal Predator movie came out after I was born and it still seems like it has been around forever.I remember going with my Dad to rent that movie on VHS when I was like 4 or 5 years old,and just being blown away by it.The final fight scene at the end when you get to see the Predator’s face for the first time and Arnie calls him an ugly MF’er was just epic stuff for a little kid.

Then of course I ended up having to see it every weekend for the next 20 years on cable.

I have similar memories, although I think my VHS was either taped off TV, or copied. But I remember a time where there was no predator.. wherease he has likely never known a world without either Predator or Robocop.

Am I the only one that just couldn’t get into Robocop as a kid? I rememeber that being like the first R rated movie I thought was horrible. And that was back in the days when I thought anything with a four letter word and a modicum of violence was quality entertainment.

But didn’t bother watching more than once. I mean, Robocop isn’t exactly something that offered anything whatsoever on subsequent viewings, and the sequels that followed weren’t that great.

Topher Grace had no business in this film, but he’s kind of just “that guy” in the movie, and he goes that part about as well as anyone. He plays douchebags extremely well.He played essentialy the same part in Traffic.

harsh

he had more right to be in it than the woman or Trejo (in another Rodriguez film…)

fair enough though

Alice Braga is an extremely good actress and gave one of the better performances of the film. Topher Grace was filling the whimp/douchebag/crybaby role of the film, and he did it well. Almost too well. This is after all a guy who’s real name is Christopher, but he calls himself Topher because he was tired of saying “Topher” when people called him “Chris”. If that ain’t douchey, I don’t know what is.

And Trejo has played the same part in every movie he’s ever been in and I’m convinced at this point he’s just getting parts because he’s Rodriguez’s BFF. “Machete” looks like the worst movie ever made.

dude that’s some serious stretching…..i think i’ll reserve that for Streep or Mirren etc…

haha you real don’t digg Topher, that’s cool…. the hate is strong in you :)

ya Trejo is definitely his boy, and a bad one…. Heat was his finest hour, piss on the rest

by RearNakedPoke on Jul 15, 2010 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

There’s a difference between “extremely good” and “all time great”.

I don’t like Topher, but then I’m not a guy who sat around and watched “That 70’s Show” and thought it was the be all end all of TV shows. He’s the Michael Bisping of actors.

And Trejo was good in Heat, but he essentially was playing the same part he has in every film he’s ever been in. For God’s sake, except for Dusk Till Dawn, there’s no difference in any part he’s ever played. The only difference in that movie is that he had to put on some makeup and some vampire teeth.

I liked it better than any of the other recent A vs. P incarnations. The original was classic and for my money Predator 2 was underrated.

This one had a lot of good action/violence and I liked how they connected this one and the 1987 flick.

Predator 2 was good when it first came out, but it hasn’t held up well. It just seems really corny now. Maybe because it has Danny Glover and Gary Busey in it? Plus, the whole urban setting just didn’t click as well. Half the charm is that they are being hunted. You don’t really pick that up in an urban setting. It just seems like random dudes getting killed when it happens in the city.

as far as sequels go its tough to live up to the original

that depends on where your motivation for making it comes from, monetary gain or the continuation of a story for “artistic” purposes.

The Former: Predators II, Spiderman II, Speed II,,

The Latter: The Bourne Supremacy/Ultimatum, Godfather II, The Dark Knight, LOTR Part II/III

A sequel that totally blew it? Highlander 2. The first film essentially wrapped up all the loose ends, and then they’re like “oh shit, this made a lot of money, how are we going to make a sequel when we left ourselves no room to do so in the story?”

Highlander 3 was slightly better, but they should have just let alone. That first movie was so good. Still waiting for someone to come along and take the series back up, like they’ve done with Batman and Predators. It’s got a lot of potential.

I could watch the first two Godfather movies any time. That’s some brilliant, brilliant work right there. And the story never gets old. They are such long, drawn out movies that you forget a lot of the plot from one viewing to the next, so it always seems sort of fresh each time.

The Dark Knight was the only film where I’ve walked out of a theater going, “Wow, I just watched something special.” Planning on going and seeing Inception sometime in the next week or so. I’ve heard that it’s typical Nolan epicness.

Is The Good, The Bad and The Ugly considered a sequel? I’ve always considered it one movie in a series that aren’t exactly tied into one another. Each of the three Man With No Name films are independent of one another and don’t have any ties to each other. It’s was just the same actors and director making three simmilar films back to back. Either way, it’s an epic and one of my all time favorite films, although I like “Once Upon In The West” just a little better.

A lot of people don’t like Once Upon a Time in The West for some reason. I’ve never figured out why. Maybe because it has more of a conventional plot than your typical western? It’s an epic that just happens to be set in the old west.

Without ruining the ending for folks who haven’t seen it yet who are reading this, there’s not really many other places they could have gone with that ending. They basically left it open for a sequel, because there is no way they could have wrapped it up in that film and made it satisfying without just killing everyone off.

Well, the only other ending that would have worked would have been to kill off all the characters. That would have still left you an opening for a sequel, due to the storyline itself.

And FWIW, I absolutley loved the ending to No Country, and have never understood the hate for it. That is the most realistic ending to a movie ever.

I love you (no homo.). Every fucker in my college class thought it sucked and keeps yapping on about Inglourious Basterds and how great it is and i just want to cry…. if i had one of you in my circle of peers i’d be a very happy boy haha

as for Predators we got the wrong ending, because they never died…. pity

Inglorious Basterds was just another Tarantino film that butt sniffs other film genres like they’re a religon. No Country actually had some deep messages going on that the majority of viewers totally missed because they were busy going “Oh my GAWD! That ending SUCKED! I don’t get it!”

But then the average movie fan thought “Titanic” and “Avatar” are the two greatest movies ever, so WTF do they know?

Basterds is a great movie, Tarantino’s best (Basterds>Reservoir Dogs>Pulp Fiction>Kill Bill>Death Proof>Jackie Brown)

The only problem I have with No Country is that it beat There Will Be Blood for best picture. TWBB is a masterpiece

I thought Basterds was a fine film. Right up there with Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction, but not better. Probably better than Reservoir Dogs.

I didn’t really like TWBB. I just couldn’t get into that movie. And I frigging love Daniel Day Lewis.

i lost ALL film respect for you… that is an outrageous call. lay off the weed.

that is more horrendous a call then

3rdRound: Machida 10-9

i mean that scene in the projector room was not only implausible, risible, self-indulgent and retarded but wholly unnecessary….

Brad Pitt saying arrive derci wasn’t enough to save that film… nothing was

The first 10 minutes is some of the best stuff in movie history, and the scene in the basement bar is AWESOME. It’s a bit uneven, sure, but no Tarantino movie is great the whole way through

The basement bar scene, and the few scenes when Pitt is really allowed to shine, are about the only good parts of that movie. The rest are just………blah.

Tarantino movies always seem like you have to wade through 2 hours of bullshit for 15 minutes of gold.

Nope. it was very good, not that good. I grant you the basement though. No way that film should have been near Oscars, joke.

For me Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs are perfect, especially the latter…so i’d quibble on the last point but whats the point…

i respect your opinion but i think i have more in common with Brian… i guess we’re all just different eh :)

I just really like the patience of the beginning of the movie.

Well, the film started in medias res, so the ending wasn’t really a grand departure from the overall concept of the movie

I rated it 4/5 for a sci-fi/action flick. I’m not going to rate “Predators” on the same scale as “The Godfather Part 2”. This film was very good…….for what it is. It’s entertaining and it’s something that will definetly end up being watched on cable a time or three in the future. But it’s not the greatest film ever made, obviously.

But I mean really, who cares? I could have totally left off that part of the review, and you would have already made up your mind by that point on whether or not you were going to go see the movie.

Nobody fast forwards through Siskel and Ebert just to see if they give a movie two thumbs up or not.

Well, how many different ways could they go with the ending? I thought the ending was solid and ultimatley satisfying.

If anything, you should critique the beginning of the film. The first 5 minutes were a little weak. Then it took off.

Spoiler alert for those who haven’t watched the film yet, don’t read any further.

How can there be no actual ending? You do realize they killed all the Predators on the planet, correct? There were only three Predators on the planet hunting them, not including the one tied up on the Totem pole. They ended up killing all the Predators, one way or another. That’s some finality, right there.

oh indeed

except more of the fuckers start landing on the planet putting them in the same situation again, no closer to a spaceship and with less ammo then they started off with (if any)… ending sucked.

That’s more people, not Predators landing. By proxy then, more Predators would then be coming to hunt them, who they could then kill and steal their ship.

You’re starting to sound like the guys who didn’t like the ending to No Country.

That’s debatable my friend…the very fact I would rather have seen an ending where humans didn’t triumph over Predators and they all die would also be an ending very much at loggerheads with the popcorn brigade and Hollywoods glorious hero roles… we’ll agree to differ.

i’m consistent anyway imo

FWIW, I thought the Yakuza vs Predator sword fight was highly appropriate. Liked how it ended, and it also was a call back to the scene in the origanal film where Billy stays behind on the log with his Bowie knife to fight the Predator.

definitely.

i greatly enjoyed that scene, even if it did push the boundaries of my imagination somewhat (because personally human v predator is a predator victory every time for me, or at least should be…that was acceptable however just like Olegs, which was the best!)

"Be yourself, don't take anyone's shit, and never let them take you alive." ~ George Way

by RearNakedPoke on Jul 16, 2010 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Why does it have to be a Predator victory every time? It’s never been established in the story line that they’re great sword fighters. There’s a reason why they have such high tech gizmo’s in the first place.

And anyway, if it was just an automatic Predator victory everytime, what fun would the movie be?

I can’t believe we’re breaking down the proper fight characteristics of a Predator vs human fight. This is almost as pointless as trying to predict a pro wrasslin match, or trying to discuss a Brock Lesnar fight.

I just finished watching Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem on cable. How this wasn’t a made for TV movie for the Sci-Fi channel, or at the very least a direct to DVD movie, I’ll never know. It was mildly entertaining, but how this was released into theaters is beyond me. It was barely watchable for cable.
