Local Fight Scene Update: CFP Returns to Myrtle Beach on Saturday!

CFP returns to Myrtle Beach this Saturday, June 5th.

CFP hits Myrtle Beach, SC once again this Saturday night (June5th) at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Check out some of the feature bouts below:

Pro Fights:

145 lbs.- Cesar Llamas (3-0) (VA) vs. Jon Owens (7-2) (SC)  * Title Fight

205 lbs.- Tomar Washington (4-0) (SC) vs. Rhomez Brower (10-10-1) (NC) * Title Fight

155 lbs.- Keith "The Rockstar" Richardson (2-1) (SC) vs. Frank Millsap (5-3) (GA)

170 lbs.- Frank Wazkut (1-0) (SC) vs.  Tony Cantrell (1-1) (SC)

Amateur Fights:

155 lbs.- Amos Collins (5-1) (SC) vs. Bradley Essic (4-2) (NC) * Title Fight

145 lbs.- Nate "The Bruiser" Davis (5-2) (NC) vs. Chris Cain (6-2) (SC)

In a battle for the CFP featherweight championship, Jon Owens (MMA For Real # 2 ranked pro featherweight in the Carolinas) faces defending champion Cesar Llamas (3-0). This bout will be a rematch of a fight a little over a year ago, which Llamas won by 2nd round submission. Tomar Washington (MMA For Real # 3 ranked pro light heavyweight in the Carolinas) gets a chance to fight in front of his hometown crowd, facing experienced veteran Rhomez Brower in what should be a fight with plenty of action. Richardson-Millsap could end up being the fight of the night. These two are fairly well matched and this one should provide some fireworks. Also, Cantrell could prove to be a decent challenge for Frank Wazkut. The two amateur fights showcase some very talented prospects. Nate Davis (MMA For Real # 1 ranked amateur featherweight in the Carolinas) meets up with a very dangerous opponent in Chris Cain. Also, one of South Carolina's best amateurs, Amos Collins, meets Bradley Essic in what should be an interesting matchup. All in all, this should be a very entertaining card. If you're anywhere near Myrtle Beach this weekend make sure you check out this show.

WHy, one earth, is Ro fighting at 205? He is a 170 fighter. I hope Doug is offering him alot of money for that one.

Good question. My guess: a pretty good payday after McNally backed out late.

I seriously doubt the payday is going to be balanced with the fact he is fighting a guy 2 weight classes above him, that is pretty much the same style fighter.

Rho

Rho wound up looking like the bigger and more in shape fighter for this event. He was a beastly big 205. I would say that he has potential to cut down to 185 and not lose anything significant in muscle mass and pure size but I still think even that could be a stretch. 205 looked pretty solid for him. The judge I was sitting next to as well as one other scored the event 50-45 against while the other scored the fight 47-48 against. I am not sure what that one judge saw that the other two didn’t but I agree with him a lot more than I agree with the others. He could have a future at 205 but I think he will need a little more time to understand and develop what his body is either more or less capable of at 205 compared to 170.

And I wish you guys could have seen the Millsaps knockout.

Rho, looks like he is huge at 170. Looks, dont get it done in fights though. However, he just is not a 205’er. I dont doubt for a second he will have success at 205, especially in regional and local shows. I have always been of the opinion, he has big stage potential at 170.

As for what the judges saw…..well I have a bad feeling SC judges are as bad as NC judges, which means he could have just like Rho’s physique better for a round, and gave him a round, or the other guy who scored it 50-45 could have been guaging his scoring from the cheers of the crowd. After having a long conversation with a judge, I can honestly say, the average fan (non training, only watch the UFC, and zero actual combat sports experience) is better qualified to judge.
