Strikeforce Instant Reaction: Werdum Beats Fedor, Stuns MMA World
Well, that was incredible. Fabricio Werdum did the impossible, beating the "Michael Jordan of MMA" in relatively easy fashion. Fedor’s propensity to play with fire proved his demise, as he was caught in a triangle choke by the best grappler in MMA’s heavyweight division, across all organizations. But where does this put us?
First of all, congrats to Werdum. It’s the biggest upset this side of GSP/Serra I, and puts him in line to fight Alistair Overeem for the Strikeforce heavyweight title.
Second, I’ll say this does nothing to tarnish Fedor’s legacy in my eyes. He is the best heavyweight in MMA history and it’ll take any other fighter a lot to surpass him in that regard.
Third: I suppose UFC 116 will actually determine who the undisputed current top heavyweight is.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Fedor going forward. He has one fight left on his contract, but I have a sneaking suspicion it will be against Josh Barnett in Japan. After that, he has a few options that I’ll list in decreasing order of likeliness to happen: retire; continue fighting in Japan for ridiculous paydays against joke fighters; go groveling on bended knee to the UFC.
I can’t wait to see how this all pans out.
I'll have more thoughts after sleeping on it.

yo
whatever leverage Strikeforce had….it’s gone now since Fedor lost. The UFC can now say they have all the best fighters in ALL the weight classes.

It hurts M1 even more, they no longer have a leg to stand on when demanding terms during contract negotiations. When CBS abandons this sinking ship, Vadim better drop to his knees and beg for the UFC’s mercy.

Screw M1
and Vadim too. M1 and Vadim are pretty much universally despised not only in the States, but by the majority of hardcore Russian MMA fans as well. That says enough, if the die hard Russian Fedor fans hate his manager.
M1 is the last organization in the world I will feel bad about. I remember how sad I was when Pride went down, I was even a bit sad when Affliction went down and as much as I don’t like Strikeforce, I wan them to do well and prosper. But I wish all the worst to M1 :-)
Why?
sorry my knowledge is pretty shallow on this. Why is M1 bad, I thought they used to co promote with pride
One loss makes a fighter completely worthless?
I don’t think so. This isn’t a guy like Matt Serra, who despite being a former champion is pretty awful. He’s still a great fighter, they’ll still ask top dollar, and they’ll still be absurd about what they get in addition to money. I consider M-1 as much as a leech as anyone else, but just because Fedor finally dropped a fight (it was bound to happen eventually people) doesn’t mean that he’s a piece of trash nobody will pay for.

Fedor’s whole selling point was that he was this unbeatable wrecking machine. Now?He’s just another high level heavyweight.M-1’s golden goose is cooked. Why would you want to deal with those shiesters now that Fedor’s mystique is shot? The whole point was that he was the #1 guy.And since he’ll never sign with Zuffa,he’ll never regain that title either.

He wasn't #1 because he was undefeated
He was #1 because he wrecked a lot of good fighters. Yes, part of his appeal was that he was essentially undefeated, but just because a dude took a single loss doesn’t mean he’s damaged goods forever. He’s not a fine piece of china that got dropped on the floor, he’s the same “best heavyweight in the world”, except now he has a loss, like everyone else. Like, all this talk about him that now that he has a single loss nobody would want him is absurd. Look at big Nog, Lesnar, Penn, GSP, or even Anderson Silva. They’re all great fighters that the UFC would go bananas over if they lost, and they’ve all got losses. Hell, Kimbo was a guy that got smoked on CBS by a scrub, and they still brought him into the fold too.

the biggest thing I would covet about him, from a promotional standpoint
is how freaking exciting his fights always are

funny, i always kind of took that for granted, never thought about it in its basest form until you said it there…very true! he’s be doing some serious business over at Zuffa on FN bonuses alone LOL… From a promotional standpoint when you add in his legacy and appeal from same as well as skillset (somewhat the same thing also) and why wouldn’t the UFC still want him?! Lesnar v Emelianenko is still massive for me, but maybe in a fast moving mma world im just nostaligic, i enjoyed when it meant something and was something i felt might happen…. (i still enjoy the thought, mind you)
the likelihood of its materialisation is all but dead now and thats because Dana is going to start shitting on Fedor again i believe…FML.

yeah, i doubt it will happen
But you can’t tell me Fedor debuting in the UFC against Randy Couture wouldn’t get everybody remotely interested in the sport at least a little excited, and if he actually worked his way up to Brock that would be legendary

oh no doubt, but i’d feel bad for Randy if that match-up were made because he’d get tooled and personally i’d feel (at this stage in Fedor career) robbed that such a match-up was made….
For me you’d have to give him the Spider, Cain, JDS or Lesnar and that would have me super stoked!!! Being honest, unless he catches another loss i’d give him an immediate shitle tot for shits, giggles and old times sake! Plus it’d be a sweet bargaining tool (except i have a feeling he’d fuck the UFC over by never fighting agin [lol] if he pulled it off…)

Oh
he’s not worthless at all…BUT his value/mystique has took a significant hit….but…I could see Dana White blackballing.lowballing him now…saying all types of "I told you he wasn’t that good’ type of thing…which Fedor and camp won’t like…and not sign with the UFC.

The Hype Kills Me.
by the best grappler in MMA’s heavyweight division, across all organizations. But where does this put us?
- Damn, it was just like 2 seconds ago that was attributed to Big Nog a fighter that defeated Werdum.
- Nah, I don’t see UFC 116 determining nothing but who’s the #1 HW in UFC based on the opportunity to compete for the title. That’s about it.

VEe is ANIMated!
Fedor and the Anger towards M-1
- He got submitted. It’s not like he got his ass beat.
- M-1 are evil and they’re blah, blah, blah. Damn, give it a rest. Zuffa, and the UFC are angels?

I am not angry with Fedor, oh no, I still am a fan of his. I certainly like Fedor a lot more than Dana White. But I do think that Zuffa has created a great product in UFC. You can divide the whole history of UFC before and after Zuffa purchased it. In fact, you could say that about MMA.
M1, on the hand, did not create anything, but has been leeching on others.
Having said that, of, course, I think that Zuffa uses all the dirty techniques corporations use and Dana White is hardly a sympathetic person

it started off so promising…

+ we now have one great similarity

Werdum, like SI Xingsong, is also only one of two people in the world! LOL, only in his case it’s one of two people to beat Fedor!….
too soon?
