Wanderlei Silva Has Broken Ribs AND Needs Knee Surgery

UFC Middleweight Wanderlei Silva

Silva dropped the news to Fighter's Only:

I am here to talk about my last few days.  I went through a very tense and difficult weekend and had a very hard decision.  Two weeks ago I felt pain in my knee while I was training wrestling.  I had an MRI of my knee and three doctors told me my knee was torn.  I took medicine to help with the pain, and although my knee felt loose, I said "no," this date is very important to me and I continued training," Silva says.

"I tried training more upper body and boxing; I kept losing weight and I was gonna fight no matter what.  Last Friday, during sparring, I injured my rib.  It was very painful and the next day I had an x-ray and an MRI.  I discovered I had three broken ribs.

"After years of fighting, my body made me stop this time.  I am here to tell you that I cannot fight on this card.  I am very sad because I trained for four months.  This is a very difficult time for me.  Now, I know that I need to have surgery on my knee.  I have no option.

Man, this is a tough break for Wanderlei Silva.  I wonder if he'll be able to fully recover from this knee injury at his age.

has his body taken the same amount of damage? surely at QB he has had a rather sheltered existence compared to a warrior like Wand…. but put me in my box if im wrong! i am kinda stretching…lol

Dude, being a QB is anything but sheltered believe me.

You have 11 guys trying to kill you the entire time, now I’m not gonna say it’s as intense as cage fighting but it’s in the same ball park. Brett Favre just makes it look easy cause he’s actually a cyborg sent form the future to conquer all mankind.

oh for real

but its not like the Pats offensive linesmen (i think they’re the boys) are that porous…or were at the height of their powers…what im getting at is that of all the QBs playing he sure as shit couldn’t have been getting sacked the most?! or was he? (thats where i fall down…potentially)

No the most is probably David Carr, he doesn't start anymore but his Rookie season he got sacked like 80 times I think it's still the record.

Brett Favre has gone like 290 games without missing a start that is unheard of for a Quarterback. I would have to say though that Football injuries are comparable to MMA, broken bones( the pads just mean you can hit the other person harder) torn ligaments, really brutal stuff not fun and the quarterbacks get hit by the baddest of the bad and knee injuries are way to common. Many new rules have been put into place to protect them but a 300 pound man that can benchpress a car and still run a 4.8 forty hitting you is not gonna end well no matter how you slice it.

im torn.

my knowledge is far more limited than yours, but still on my humble plain of knowledge i still find it hard to believe that a QBs injuries would on an averaged basis be comparable… a regular joe from elsewhere on the field, oh hell yeah! i mean those running backs (again i could be wrong here) get absolutely creamed, steam rolled and crushed….those sons be fucking train wrecked lol! its so awesome haha….

i’d say me and Oggmash seem to be singing from the same hymn sheet

Football is a 16 game season in about a 6 month time including preseason and playoffs

Injury’s are very common( and with some teams not common enough) but it’s not uncommon for Qbs to get pretty fucked up. to be contiued

but his injuries were brutal

QB, compared to most postions and to Wand.....is sheltered.

Not from the monster hits, but from the wear of every game (for other players, everyone but the QB hits someone almost every play) and training (for MMA guys, the training catches guys with joint injuries, matter of time and part of the game). But I agree about this being 100% recoverable for Wand, given modern medicine and PT. I actually, think its a blessing for him to have time to heal all over during his Knee rehab.

But time will tell for certain.

Yeah, I’m all for the guys who have a ton of fights taking a bit of time in between fights. It keeps Matt Hughes going fairly well, it was great for Nog against Couture, and even Chuck looked good before Franklin dropped him

I don't know what all this football business is about

But muay thai isn’t exactly a sport that’s easy on one’s body, and his MMA career hasn’t exactly been the kind that lends itself to longevity. I’m still a little surprised that he’s still fighting today, and though this is a late withdrawl, I don’t really think it would be fair of anyone to hold it against him.

Also, indenting (with inconsistent spacing, no less) on comment posts like these looks goofy as all hell. Just sayin’.

yo

The damage Wandy has taking in fights AND training over the past like 12 years makes Tom Brady’s shit look pretty mild IMO.

I don't even remember how this conversation got started

But all I was trying to say is that you see similar injuries in the two sports not that one was more grueling or harder on the body than the other.

Wanderlei has taken about three careers worth of punishment to begin with.Add in all those old Chute Boxe gym wars where they basically just went around knocking each other out on a day to day basis……..it’s no wonder he appears to be about 20 years older than he really is.

In a report by Bloody Elbow, it looks like Akiyama isn’t too keen to the change in opponent:

“I am not pleased with the change. There are just ten days left until the contest for me to determine [Chris Leben’s] threats and the time is insufficient to establish a tailored gameplan. Leben is also not as high-profile as [Wanderlei] Silva and that does not help me.”

“If there is to be a replacement I was hoping for a big name. I spent one year preparing hard for this fight and this news has come as a big disappointment, my motivation has waned. I do not know yet what will happen. .. In the worst case, I will not take part in the [UFC 116] event. We are working hard to resolve this issue.

I can get behind him not being happy about Silva dropping out so late, but to suggest that he’d skip out on 116 because his opponent is Chris Leben.. I dunno man, that’s some weaksauce.
