WEC 49 Ratings Peak At 324K But Only Average 244K Overall

WEC 49: Varner vs. Shalorus

MMAJunkie with the news:

With no titles on the line and most of the organization's biggest stars on the sidelines, ratings dipped for Sunday's Versus-televised WEC 49 event but peaked with 324,000 viewers for the night's Jamie Varner vs. Kamal Shalorus lightweight headliner.

The June 20 WEC 49 event, which took place at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, averaged approximately 244,000 viewers.

It's pretty sad that such a great event goes un-noticed by casual MMA fans.  The WEC consistently puts on some of the best shows you will see, yet nobody is watching and it seems as though Zuffa really could care less right now.  Maybe something is in the works down the pipe to get the WEC on a bigger stage?  Or could they just fold it into the UFC as I suggested many moons ago

UFC Blue doesn't sell

~250k viewership is pretty bad, to be quite honest. UFC on Vs. 1 did similar ratings to the TUF finale on Saturday night (around 1.2 million), and even though I won’t go as far to say that Jamie Varner isn’t a draw, the numbers pretty clearly show that there’s a limited audience for the WEC product. It’s weird, considering the teensy differences between WEC and UFC, but the fact that Varner vs Shalorus got out-drawn by around a million people by Hammill and Jardine.. well, I don’t know what to say.

That and abnormally small fighters just aren’t appealing to casual fans. People aren’t going to identify with fighters who have the physical stature of 12 year olds, it almost smacks of a freak show.

ehh

dunno man…BJ Penn and Faber do pretty well…I think if you put these smaller guys on the same card…and put UFC 49 in the title…betcha it does well north of 500K viewers…

Villin's got a point

Despite the lighter weights having more speed, and generally better fighters, the idea of a “Heavyweight main event” seems to have a lot more weight to it (no pun intended) than a “Featherweight main event”.

oh..I agree

I still stand by my statement as well though….UFC On Versus 1 was a prime example of what I was talking about.

I'm 140 pounds

I like the “freakshow” then. MMA is especially suited to the lighter weights for two reasons the pace of the fighters and I think you see a lot more exciting decisions in the lower weight classes than the higher ones. It’s not a universal rule but I’d say it’s pretty safe to say in general the faster the pace the more exciting the fight.

Maybe more exciting

But because of the smaller weight of the lighter-weight dudes, it’s sometimes difficult to generate the power to just kill dudes. Like, I have trouble thinking of someone below 170 that really packs a ton of power, and even at 170 the list of names of killers is pretty short compared to 205 or heavyweight.

if we had more fights like leonard garcia vs the korean zombie the wec would be fine

i know the wec has plans for the korean zombie b/c they showed him at a recent ufc event. i like both organizations and i like the speed of the lighter guys. how many boring heavyweight fights were their on the tuf 10 show? i thought kimbo vs mittrione sucked.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Craig Thompson just might end up being a savvy guy if he gets the MWC to 12 teams. Hell is just a word, the reality is much much worse." That is TUF.

I hope you weren’t expecting too much?! The actual UFC HW division is pretty stacked and has some very entertaining fights fought, and to be fought!

but yeah that fight was lethal…..
