UFC 116: Has Shane Carwin Done Enough to Sell His Fight with Brock Lesnar?
First Shane Carwin made the announcement on his twitter, (twitter.com/shanecarwin) he would not be doing media the month leading up to his fight with Lesnar. Many fans and journalist questioned the move. Nobody that I can think of has refused to enguage the media to hype their upcoming fight. It seems silly to me that Carwin would want to hype a fight with the UFC's biggest draw in Brock Lesnar.
Dave Meltzer said on his radio show (via Fightopinion.com)
DAVE MELTZER: "I thought Brock was good. I mean, you know, it’s just he was… it’s just like that other, the last confrontation, it’s just like Brock’s… Brock’s trying to promote a fight with no help whatsoever. And I’m surprised, you know, because it was Carwin you know mouthing off that put him ahead of Cain Velasquez, you know, in getting this shot and now he’s just not… you know, I’m sure he’s training hard and everything.
He is, kind of, Carwin is kind of a quiet guy in a lot of ways. He’s just not big talker. Brock likes to talk. So… yeah, but… I thought that you know Brock was encouraging him to fire back, like the last time, and Carwin just wouldn’t. I don’t know, you know it’s like, he’s 35 years old, he’s got to know the name of the game, you know, and I just… I just think, I think he hasn’t done his job in selling this fight, that’s for sure, and I mean all across the board."
Shane fired back today on his blog:
"A lot of people are still questioning my reasoning behind limiting my media access. If you read this article it would sound as if I am somehow failing at my duties as a fighter. Or according to the Zuffa "Talking Heads" I am not doing my part to sell this fight. Lets talk about me selling this fight. I earned this fight. I was "given' my previous opportunity against Brock but this one I earned. I was asked to train for Cain and I began my camp. I was then told Cain is not the opponent I am being bumped up to Lesnar.
Then I begin training for Lesnar to only have him pull out of the fight TWICE. His "miracle recovery" underway I was told I am going to have to face Frank Mir to earn the opportunity to face Brock (something I had already been given and taken away now twice). So for those of you confused by the fact that I somehow am fighting Brock because I talked crap or played some hype man you are wrong. I earned this fight and this opportunity. I have never turned down a fight, I have never told Zuffa no, I have and always do a good job and for them. Those that know me know that is who and what I am all about."
Those in the Media that want to chastise me have not even attempted to reach out through proper channels to get an interview. I never said I wasn't doing interviews or eliminating media. I said I was not taking any direct media request. I just do not have the time to spend "just 15 minutes" on the phone answering the same questions over and over. The time adds up and that time has to come from my other job, family or training. None of which are worth sacrificing more than the need to promote a fight.
I have however accepted 100% of the interview request that Zuffa has presented me. I have taken my own initiative and went out for the entire month of May meeting fans traveling the US. My team has got me on the Jason Ellis Show (@ellismate) in which I did about a ten minute interview (on my own) to help promote the fight.
In your eyes, has Shane Carwin done enough to promote his fight with Brock Lesnar?

No way in hell will Dana or the Fertitas allow Shane to go all reclusive on them now. Not for this one.
In terms of hyping the fight, well, for me he has done quite a lot to make me want to see him get punched in the face somehow under a guise that many deem some stand-up blue collar shit…
"I don't care, hit him with your groin!"
He don't need to hype it really
The Lesnar name will carry this card…along with him being out of action for over a year almost. I want to see Carwin lose badly for some odd reason…lol.

First thing about this is that I found it very hard to read Dave meltzer’s stuff. Eaither it was put to print horridly or he can’t complete sentences.
And to hell with what Meltzer said. This is a fight that barely needs marketing. Lesner is the biggest name in MMA here in the USAand this PPV sells all on its own. Carwin needs to focus on this fight. As long as he doesn’t completely shut out the media or does things to make it very hard for the media to get to him, then I don’t mind.
For some reason, the guy who transcribes these radio interviews wants to do it word for word.He makes intelligent people sound like idiots.Jordan Breen is one of the most well spoken people on radio, but if you read the transcriptions, you’d swear he was some 14 year old slacker.

Carwin is a busy man.Not only is he training for the biggest fight of his career,he’s still working a full time job,and raising a family (including a new baby). And you want the man to go out of his way to do more media? He already said he’ll do every interview that Zuffa asks of him,he’s just not going to do interviews with every random blogger who contacts him, which is understandable. But that gets the media all butt hurt.
The other point to be made here is that Lesnar does the exact same thing-he does only the media that is absolutley required of him-so why shouldn’t Carwin be able to do the same?If anything,Carwin has an excuse.Lesnar just doesn’t want to be bothered by it.At the same time, you can ask Carwin damn near anything on his website and he will answer you directly.

I guess this might come as a shock
but I think alot of folks may not realize every person who fights, isnt a mouthy douche bag. Carwin, has never been a talker. To be honest, he has sold the fight already by KTFO’ing everyone in front of him in devastating fashion, what more exactly, does he need to say? Alot of guys are in MMA to be “rock stars” and have everyone hang on thier words, I just dont think Carwin us that sort of fellow.
Also I agree about meltzer being hard to read at times, alot of you knows.
