Report: Dan Hardy To Fight Martin Kampmann Or Carlos Condit At UFC 120

UFC welterweight Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy

Photo: Sherdog

From ESPN UK:

ESPN.co.uk understands that the UFC has narrowed down the shortlist for Dan Hardy's next opponent to just two names: Carlos Condit or Martin Kampmann.

I think either fight would be good, but I think I'd rather see Hardy fight Kampmann opposed to Condit since Kampmann just took out top 5 welterweight Paulo Thiago.  A second win over a top ten guy would shoot Kampmann into title contention, probably like one win away from a title shot.  Whereas, Condit needs to put together more wins over better competition before he regains contender status in the welterweight division again(he's lost what momentum he brought from his WEC reign).  Not to mention that Kampmann has more internation flair as this fight will surely take place on foreign soil somewhere in the UK more than likely.

Kampmann probably makes the most sense for no other reason than he flat out asked for this fight.Wouldn’t suprise me if they went with Condit though, since this is a Spike card and the Spike guys would learn twards Condit a bit more since he’s got more name recognition and is considered more exciting.

Kampmann probably runs a complete grapple train on Hardy.Condit probably fights like an idiot for two rounds before taking Hardy down, then looses a decision.

Probably…Hardy is a big boy though…so he might be able to keep it standing a bit more against Kampmann…if not though…it’s a wrap.

Don’t forget,Kampmann used to fight at 185.I don’t think Hardy’s size is going to bother him much, espically when it comes to grappling.Hardy got outgrappled by Marcus Davis, for cryin out loud.

Barely, and Davis isn’t on his level. That just shows how bad Hardy’s ground defense is,being forced to go life and death with Marcus Davis.Honestly,if Davis didn’t go for that heel hook in the third round which ended up getting him swept,he would have retained top control and won that decision.

Wait – I’m confused. I haven’t seen the Hardy/Davis fight in a while but I don’t remember any close calls on the ground. And as far as Hardy’s defense, I thought the GSP fight proved he has excellent submission defense.

Davis took Hardy down several times and controled him on the ground, landed some ground and pound. He was well on his way to winning the third round (and the fight),when he went for a brain fart of a heel hook on Hardy.Hardy got out of it and ended up on top in the last minute of the round, landed an elbow that cut open Davis and rocked him bad,and won the round on two of the judges scorecards, giving him the split decision.

I just re-watched the fight and it’d be a bit of a stretch to say Hardy was forced to go “life and death” with Davis on the ground. More specifically, Davis didn’t do anything close to controlling Hardy in the 3rd round. At the beginning of the round he immediately went for a trip/takedown and spent the next minute and a half in Hardy’s guard. During that time, Hardy tied him up really well and Davis only landed one elbow. Then, with more than half of the round to go, Davis went for a knee bar and then a heel hook, neither of which was close to catching Hardy. Then, they scrambled back to their feet and ended up clinching against the fence. Hardy then took Davis down and landed some brutal elbows (the best of which cut Davis open). When the ref stopped them to check the cut, Davis could barely stand up.

Not that any of this matter much, since Kampmann is much better than Davis at grappling. That said, the only way Kampmann wins this is by a decision. Hardy’s submission defense alone is excellent, as shown during the 5 rounds he got dominated by GSP. The problem with Kampmann is that he’s seriously lacking in his striking defense and eats too many shots. Take his fight against Jacob Volkmann for example – there’s no reason he should have taken that much damage in that fight. There is no way he can take shots like that from Hardy. I’m sure we would all agree that Dan Hardy doesn’t have the same power in his hands as Paul Daley, but I think he has plenty to put Kampmann away if it stays on the feet for any period of time.

I think it's fine either way

Condit has a little more going for him in terms of that WEC run, but the criticisms of him are fully justified. Kampmann.. I dunno man, I just can’t get behind him for some reason.

Kampmann vs Hardy, while Condit should take on Swick. We can make Condit vs. Swick a loser leaves town match.

Nah, Condit’s record doesn’t warrant that at all.

Swick’s, well, I’d hear an argument lol

The loser leaves town portion was more tongue-in-cheek. Whoever doesn’t win will need four or five wins in a row to get back into possible title contention. Neither guy will get cut that soon.

That fight has Ultimate Kickboxing + a little crazy grappling = bad decision written all over it.

Not really Swick is a shell of what he was at MW, he’d gas at the pace that Condit fights and would get chocked out like he was in his last fight.
