BREAKING NEWS: New York State Senate Votes to Legalize MMA

According to the Wall Street Journal:

New York moved one step closer to becoming the 45th state to regulate mixed martial arts, as the state Senate voted 32-26 to pass a bill on Wednesday that would legalize the sport.

A similar bill is currently in committee in the state Assembly, where it is expected to pass before facing a close vote on the Assembly floor. If it gets out of the Assembly, Gov. Paterson is expected to sign it into law and fans could see a mixed martial arts event in Madison Square Garden as early as this fall.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship, the sport's most well-known promotion, is hoping an Assembly vote will take place over the next two weeks before the current legislative session ends.

you were right. i have no problem with touching gloves just hugs and embraces.

i doubt it b/c seattle is a huge city and would want it(a ufc event) imo.

i lived there a awhile. they had one or two in portland so washington state is probably one of the states that does not have it. largest population of any state out west (except cali) until you hit texas.

Hopefully it goes through.

Being that New York is in an $8.1 billion deficit they can probably use the money an event would bring in. I just wonder how much they plan on taxing Zuffa and all the other promotions that roll through there.

At this point, I really don't care anymore

“OMG, another holdout state is getting on board!!” It’s cool, but for as much bouncing around as NY has done on it, I’d be just as happy if they don’t get it. It would be cool to see an event at MSG, but the cost to rent the building is high, and their state taxes are high anyway.

I believe it was Paul Heyman who said that the fans are all for a show at MSG now,but once it happens, they’re going to go “$12 for a hotdog?$9 for a beer?$25 for parking? What is this BS?We waited all these years for this?!?!”

Sanctioning in New York is purely symbolic, mainly because they were the first ones to put the kybosh on them back in the day in a big,big way.

Good point

And big ups on bringing Heyman into the mix. A brilliant mind, regardless of the topic.
