The Naked Truth About Interim Belts
Editor’s Note: Bear with me on this one, no doubt I’ll catch heat for it!
To my mind one of the greatest tragedies in the infancy of MMA and more pertinently the reign of the Zuffa Empire, of which I’m most familiar, is the unwillingness to embrace the concept of an interim belt completely. Since the dawn of the dinosaur the concept of an interim belt has been so simple its borderline tantamount to insulting the integrity of one’s intelligence. If the reigning, defending champion and conqueror of a weight division is unable to defend his belt for an extended period of time then the no. 1 contender is allotted (earns) an interim belt in his stead, by default making him the stand in “King” while the King is on hiatus. The most classical example of said scenario is Shane Carwin stepping up at UFC 116 in the State of Nevada as interim champion, where he looks to dethrone Viking descendant and reigning UFC HW Champion of the World, Brock Lesnar. The prelude to all of this was the unfortunate and serious illness that not only threatened to champion the indomitable Lesnar but also retire him, diverticulitis. Due to his extended time away in medical care to ensure his health it was a requisite of the UFC HW division to have kingpins Frank Mir and Shane Carwin square off for interim championship bragging rights. Carwin was to triumph with thunderous shots that still echo in Frank’s skull when he lays his head to sleep. The majesty of this unfortunate scenario however is that we are now propositioned with a titanic tussle for the undisputed UFC HW gold strap involving a legitimate no. 1 contender.
That however is where my disbelief and disenchantment step on the Interim party bus and my delight steps off. Clearly, using reasonable rational that should not be made out to be the exclusive and sole occasion a champion may be unable defend his belt and in turn the sole occasion the awarding of an interim belt is justified. It’s risible that this has never been brought up before (at least not that I’m aware of any way, at time of going to press), what if the champion is to move between weight classes due to a lack of contenders and/or a wish to be an all weight division conquering bad ass mother**ker. I mean, come on people?! What’s wrong with you? Check this out, if I want to see José Aldo move down to Bantam Weight and swipe that belt too then I don’t believe I’m being unreasonable in asking for an interim champion in his stead (because we know, you know we do, that there ain’t nobody taking that strap from him). What I propose is that José moves down and wrecks some fool for 135lb gold and the right to hold two belts at the one time because he’s that good. In tandem Gamburyan faces off against say Faber for the interim belt, allowing the cultivation of a future title bout while he’s on a division conquering hiatus.
Is there anything wrong with what I have proposed? Absolutely not, you’re just jealous that you didn’t have this ingenious plan yourself (and I can’t fault you there, being honest). In short we need to utilize interim straps for exactly what they were intended for. Let’s stop f**king around people Dana Joe Silva and start giving the people what they want. I want Aldo, St. Pierre and Silva jumping weight class for meaningful fights and divisional gold, quite simply. That’s not too much to ask, it’s really just a means to an end; where the end involves awesomeness not seen since Royce Gracie was strangling fools for cash in the original blood sport. Let’s get it on.

I don't know man
I don’t like your WEC example because there really is a plethora of contenders waiting for their shot. Lets say for the sake of argument that GSP moved up to 185 and it’s a month ago, then I could see having an interim WW belt while GSP does his thing because he had contenders coming out his ears.

true
but would any of those contenders at 135lb beat Aldo? i’m a fan of multi-belt holding champs
i’m very biased :)

I think
interim belts serve a purpose..I have no problem with them really…however, I’m not a fan of a fighter holding two belts at one time…like Dan Henderson holding both PRIDE titles was dumb as hell to me…one of the divisions is going to be in limbo because there’s no way a fighter can rightfully defend both titles the way he should.

I disagree
I think he can properly defend but I think under that line of thinking certain individuals will lose a shot just down to scheduling, like the hypothetical Gamburyan v Faber fight and if Gamburyan were to lose…. the flip side to that though, and the reason i’m an advocate, is that if he can’t beat Faber he don’t deserve one. quite simply.
it separates, for the most part, the men from the boys and hopefully guarantees that the best dude is actually the dude getting the shot and not some make-shift top contender like a Leites or a Cote….

Like you said, the point of an interim title is when someone can’t defend theirs due to whatever circumstances. There’s a sharp contrast between that, and somebody not defending it due to wandering around other weight classes. But what’s the point of an interim title holder, when you can just make a #1 contender? Is there a point to giving a dude a title belt when he’ll just fight the champ in six months? I say no.
We’ll take, for example, Anderson Silva. When he first got the strap, he defended about twice a year. Starting in 2009, and now seemingly into 2010 he’s defended once a year and played around at 205. If a fighter can have 2-3 fights per year, there’s no point to an interim title, because while the champ is in their second weight class, the new “interim champion” will just fight them the next time out.

I guess you’re right…a part of me still thinks it would be kind of cool though, however lame the idea was. I think the actual physical entity of a belt as opposed to a “status” should hold value but at the same time Carwin’s attitude regarding his own strap would suggest i’m wayyy off…..
in reality the three of ye are most likely right!

i just can't wait for the rematch between wiman and danzig. lol.
so who are you taking lesnar or carwin? i do think carwin is a live dog but i just can’t get over the fact that lesnar won’t go for the immediate takedown and do to carwin what he did to mir the second time around. he has not fought in a long time. but i think wrestling is alot like riding a bike. i’m sure he will be as fast on the ground as he was before. it could change once i see some of the promos that will come.

Doesn't look like I said it in this thread
Not saying it, or the Wiman/Danzig aren’t interesting things to talk about.. it’s just the thing is that from the looks of things this is a thread that’s about the legitamacy of interim title belts.

you should know my pattern. i tend to go off on tangents.
i now put all my picks on three diferent mma blogs on sports nation. i don’t hide anything. if you did well congratulations but i did not see one person put hathaway down on here. plus hathaway just destroyed sanchez. i knew that penn fight was a spirit killer for sanchez. i will be taking evans and koscheck as written on my signature come fight time. my new signature was written before rua’s recent knee surgery.

A tangent is when you creep away from one topic to another by a connection
There’s zero connection between any of what you’ve said and this topic, except that it’s all gone down in the UFC. Like, I could go on a tangent from talking about tomorrow’s Strikeforce over to how great King Mo is, because Mo trains with Babalu, and if Babalu wins he’ll be given a shot at Mo’s title (if he wants it). If you want to call it a tangent that’s cool, but it’s much more akin to incoherent rambling.

That's going down the road of boxing
Interim champions, who are basicly just #1 contenders. And the sanctioning bodies (pick your poison from the oodles available) love it too, because they get paid for when their “champions” (ie the real champ, and the #1 contender) fight for their title.
See, if we had the interims, as you suggest, they’re essentially #1 contenders. Then you’ve got a contender for the interim title, which is essentially a contender to the contender. It’s just goofy as hell, and the only point to it is to hand out more belts. Oh, not to mention that you’re dilluting the meaning of a title belt, because there will be literally twice as many “champions”.

The point of putting out an interim title, even if the winner will face the real champion soon after, is for 2 reasons: Marketing and 5 rounds. Being able to say it’s a championship fight immediately makes more folks tune into the fight. Plus, adding the 5 rounds instead of the usual 3 makes it more of a spectacle.
