MMA For Real May Middleweight MMA Rankings

UFC Middleweight Champ Anderson Silva

Fighter Last Ranking
1. Anderson Silva 1
2. Chael Sonnen 4
3. Jake Shields 8
4. Nate Marquardt 3
5. Vitor Belfort 5
6. Demian Maia 6
7. Yushin Okami 7
8. Dan Henderson 2
9. Robbie Lawler 9
10. Jorge Santiago UR

Star-divide

The only real movement was Shields moving up with the victory over Henderson...and Jorge Santiago rejoined the top ten list as Yoshihiro Akiyama was dropped due to inactivity basically.

Good list. I think Belcher should replace Lawler though.

The harder you work, the luckier you get.........

I almost put Belcher there

but beating Wilson Gouveia(who’s clearly done pretty much) and a Patrick Cote that hadn’t fought since 2008 after losing a arguable decision agaisnt Akiyama wasn’t quite enough IMO.

Yeah I think he's one of those woulda coulda guys,

I take him over Lawler though. And who the fuck is Santiago?

by doonerthesooner on May 19, 2010 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Santiago is the Sengoku MW champion. He had an excellent fight with Mahmed Kalidov a few months ago, check out the highlight:

I appreciate it, but my computer doesn’t have a flash player and I’ve already killed two work computers somehow so I won’t be downloading anything. He beaten anyone of note stateside?

by doonerthesooner on May 19, 2010 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

He washed out of the UFC years ago on back-to-back losses to Belcher and Leben. His best win stateside is probably Trevor Prangley. I think he beat Kazuo Misaki recently, but he’s best known for the Khalidov fights which will probably go to a trilogy.

He’s a top-20 guy, but I wouldn’t put him in my top-10

Just Some Thoughts
  • Happy to see a non-UFC dude really penetrate the MW list. Now all we need is for Shields to tell Dana, I don’t want GSP, I want Silva! Only to get Marquardt and get stoppped in the 2nd round.
  • Belfort came into the UFC after defeating Terry Martin and Matt Lindland. He defeated Franklin in his return at 190lbs. How does he ranked above Maia, Okami and Henderson? Maia defeated tougher guys than Martin and Lindland at 185lbs. Henderson lost but . . . . wow, his stock looks like it plummeted.
    I beat that guy

-Dan Henderson reminds White, Silva and Fertita that he defeated Belfort via decision while negotiating a new contract after UFC 100.

Well

the guys that Okami beat…(Tanner, MacDonald, Lister) aren’t very good and he only finished Tanner…whereas Belfort destroyed Martin, Lindland, and Franklin…other than Sonnen…Maia hasn’t really beaten anyone…and Henderson just lost to a blown up welterweight….had he won…he’d been up there…

When it comes down to fighters being interchangable…like Belfort and Maia…I always look at who I think would win the fight if those two fought…I think Belfort knocks Maia out….so he’s ahead of him.

That’s speculation. Many people thought Henderson would easily beat Shields but that did not happen, so although Belfort would more than likely work over many MW fighters in the division, that’s not necessarily the case. Hey look at Belcher’s recent fights. Kang? Gouveia? Cote?

Take a gander at Sherdog’s MW rankings, I think they got some things right. They didn’t drop Henderson all the way down.

Ok, that was humorous.

Finally...

Shield cracks your top 5. Took you long enough…hah. You had your reasons – like thinking he’d get destroyed by Hendo and what not. It’s all good – and all subjective.

I’ll say the same thing I said last month – I think Jacare will show up in your list in the future.

Jacare could be a P4P guy one day

nah. I like Mr. Alligator but he really has to show more of his abilities and potential.
Jon Jones really looks like a future P4P, the kid is living up to the astronomical hype.
