You're Only As Good As Your Last Fight...Sometimes Better

This is something that comes up almost immediately after a big event or a major bout with a perennial favorite.  The over-exaggeration of that fighter.  It happens all the time, sometimes it's just, sometimes it's a little premature.  I spoke on that a little last week after the crowning of a new Light Heavyweight Champion and it seems that after Strikeforce's Saturday show, here we go again.  After a dominant performance it is for us fans to have tunnel vision.  The lasting impression is that fight and nothing else.  We forget the past inconsistencies of that fighter or glaring holes that have yet to be filled.  All we see is that moment.  Take for instance, BJ Penn.  After he had blazed through top contenders Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez, many seemed to totally dismiss the former champs cardio issues of the past.  That said issue ended up playing a part in his loss (albeit controversial) last month.  The same can be said about Lyoto Machida.  Once he had Rashad Evans looking like a tornado victim, we quickly ushered in the Machida era.  A little under a year and that era has since been long gone.  Now, if you read the forums after Saturday's show, Alistair Overeem is probably one win away from needing to square off against Monster Trucks or Wild Buffalo after his dominant win against an overmatched/still green Brett Rogers.  It's funny to think how many people will jump on a bandwagon after a good showing but will be the first to rant about how a fighter was overrated or that they're done the minute they lose.  We know the cycle will continue and we'll get more funny threads started on discussion forums like 'Who Would Win Between Shogun and the Chicago Bears?' or 'Could Alistair Overeem Turn Water into Wine?'  Gotta love the hype!

Yea

it’s the nature of the beast….the thing with Overeem that gives it some justification is that he absolutely crush Brett Rogers….whereas Rogers had Fedor in quite a bit of trouble….so it’s only natural to do that bit of MMA math I suppose.

they do it all the time in college football. head to head comparisons or similar opponents......

you have played. it is a fair assessment in this case b/c both overeem and fedor fought rogers within the same 1 year timespan.

Fair weather fans tend to abandon ship quickly. Loyal fans tend to make absurd excuses. Rational people tend to seek explanations.

Yeah I stay with Rashad, Wandy, Kampmann and a few others no matter what. But I do notice a tendency, in myself, to skew reality in favor of them.

Especially as a betting man.

If Overeem and Rogers just striaght kickboxed, Overeem might still finish Rogers but it would have taken a whole lot longer. People kind of overrate his Kickboxing ability. Overeem is very good in the clinch, both grappling and striking. Rogers is terriable in the clinch. Overeem worked that fight to his best advantage. What is interesting now is who is better in the clinch, Fedor or Overeem. I want to find out soon Strikeforce!

'Rec-ed
  • Like I said, even though I’m a fan, I’m waiting for some one to defeat Anderson Silva just to hear and read the non-sense. Keep dancing Silva and keep styling on ya opponents while sticking the jab in their faces. Oh yeah, stop running.
  • Lyoto Machida is still kind of a big deal. Side note, I hear Thiago Silva enjoyed Shogun’s victory.
  • I’m not sold on Brock Lesnar . . . yet. Carwin, Velasquez and Dos Santos are simply better because they simply have WAY more fights and are undefeated in the UFC. Forget the hype.
  • And I think Alan Belcher would silence all the GSP talk in the middleweight division.

you think belcher could take gsp? belcher is in my top ten favorite fighters.

defintely want to see anderson silva ktfo and on the canvas so whoever does it can dance a little for the people who would rejoice.

Belcher has proved time and time again that he can take a punch. He isn’t scared of standing in front of his opponents. His ground game is very efficient, see his fight against Kang. He was patient and literally took the W away from Kang. And he’s a really big 185lbs. who already stated that he’s willing to face Anderson Silva (forget about the belt) at 185 or 205lbs. He doesn’t care.

GSP can probably take Belcher down . . . or any fighter if he puts his mind to it, but in the end will he be able to completely wear down a naturally bigger fighter Belcher at 185lbs? After watching GSP vs (Fitch, Alves and Hardy) I really doubt that. GSP can definitely stand and do his thing, but Belcher is a young fighter who probably has seen it all at this point with over 20 professional fights.

With all the continued talk about GSP moving up in weight to face Anderson Silva in a super-fight, GSP versus Alan Belcher is dream fight I would like to see. After all, the possibility of the GSP-Silva superfight is kind of dead as far as Dana White is concerned.

i would like to see belcher beat gsp. just so his ego won't get bigger than it is

and belcher still got robbed in akiyama fight. belcher has two or three wins since that fight and akiyama has yet to fight. it just shows how much damge belcher did to sexyama. that is ok b/c w. silva is going to beatdown the pretty boy for me. war axe murderer.
