History made and in the making: Abu Dhabi
With so many statements being made about how UFC 112 is such a historical event, whether discussing the amazingly high standard of the card or the location itself, the amount of mixed martial arts fans in the world who will tuning in could potentially reach record numbers. But there will likely be a considerable amount of those numbers who are questioning "Why Abu Dhabi?" With the level of contributions presented to the sport by Sheik Yahnoon Bin Zayed AL Nahyan and his father Sheik Zayed of the United Arab Empire, whether through their training facilities or their sponsoring of one of the biggest grappling tournaments in history, it is a valuable consideration to acknowledge the history of the area in correlation with the sport.
Do you feel that there should be a greater emphasis placed on the history of the sport(s) in Abu Dhabi by fighters and Zuffa promotions out of pure respect or do you feel that the presence of the UFC 112 event in itself is an effort to show respect?

I think the event itself is a good gesture
albeit it happening is due to the Sheiks you mentioned…I mean what else could the do to honor those guys?

I don’t think that it is a matter of really “doing” anything for them necessarily. I just think that it could potentially be an additional character that the UFC has an opportunity to build up to make the event even more personally attractive by addressing the history. If they addressed this history more, I think that it would show a greater appreciation to the sheiks, although I am in agreeance that there is no real need to show gratitude, but just more of a public “handshake” from the UFC to show that they are grateful for what these guys have done.

I guess the ‘public handshake’ would be the 10% sale to them.

"amazingly high standard of the card"
certainly cannot be a reference to the “match”/“turkey shoot” making
rather some chosen participants, namely Silva and Penn

and the presence of Hughes (who I have never personally been a fan of but have always respected as a fighter and for the way that he handles himself) and any of the generation of Gracie’s that Renzo comes from. As well as two championships being on the line.
Now in reference to the turkey shoot, if there is much of anyone left in the division who is CURRENTLY (and I put that in all caps because I think that it is a very keyword because there are a great number of up-and-comers in the middleweight division) then Maia would HAVE to be considered one of it not the top challenges for SIlva. I feel like a lot of people are thinking that he is completely untouchable and he has been peaking amazingly and on a phenomenal run. It seems like a lot of people are discrediting a lot of the challengers because they haven’t been “big named” opponents. I think that this may be a mistake. THey think that the only people that could take out Silva are guys that may be challenging for upperweight classes. Hell, everyone is asking Matt Serra now, much the same, if he has any interest in dropping a weight class to challenge for the belt against BJ. I think that this is an incorrect method of thinking. Also, I guess I reference back to PRIDE days when he kinda got handled a lot of times.
Even with BJ being one of my favorite fighters I have to say that Frankie Edgar is a notable opponent within the weight class. We have seen in the past, with fighters like Silva, Hughes and St. Pierre, a long absence after they basically clear out the division. Do you guys think that we are on the verge, of seeing an absence from what has essentially become his division in effort to make another run at welterweight. We are hearing now that he is eyeballing the division again.
Definitely not attempting to attack you. Just something that I have found more and more as of late that I think isn’t being acknowledged properly. In the end in most cases, big names are big names for a reason, but its unfair to us to discredit the up-and-comers because eventually they will be the new wave and prominence of MMA. Not everyone is going to be a Randy Couture and be around for 76 years.

dude, no offence taken (",)
delighted you spoke up for your opinion, but no way do i share it lol!
-Matt Hughes is a legend and future HOFer in mma but no way is he at an amazingly high standard at this stage in his career. he was lucky to even get the decision against Serra
-Renzo deserves respect but has always failed against top fliters, look for that again even if this one isn’t in his prime. (i personally see it being a beatdown on him)
-just because Maia (see also Edgar for similar story) is a top 5 MW doesnt mean he actually poses a serious threat to Silva. look what Marquardt (who is stratospheres below Silva in striking ability) did to him in under a minute or so. i mean Silvas taken out 2 205ers already and cud fight at HW. no way he takes punishment or gets handled by Maia. Maia gets put through a Muay Thai clinic
-BJ just strangled the no. 2 ufc LW and stopped (by doctor) a top LW contender in dominating fashion. no way Edgar gives him fits. at all. BJ is all conquering at LW at the moment and his tear will not be stopped by any currently rostered LW in the ufc. it will take a decent WW to drop down to give him any compeition at LW. this wont happen so look for him to move up for proper competition at WW after he dismantles Edgar.
-yes im giving props to the big names and to you it might seem like im knocking the small men. there is a reason why thos guys have the names they earned it in the ring with their abilities and performances. these guys are tried and tested under fire and have proven themselves in many championship fights. they guys they’re fighting have never even fought once for a strap let alone on numerous occasions.
my friend i hear what you’re saying, but, not a hope. watch and see. i could very well be wrong. don’t count on it though. the odds are in my favour, quite literally

by no means
am I saying that I disagree with you. The only one that I disagree with you on is the finishing of Renzo. I think that one will not be as definitive as you are thinking.
Maia is a much higher caliber competitor compared to his opponent compared to Edgar and his. Maia has incredible jiu-jitsu and his striking has only gotten better. Am I saying that he is going to definitely win? Or that any of these guys are going to win over their opponents? No and maybe that’s where you are misunderstanding what I am saying. My point is that the challengers are high caliber main event level challengers and should be considered a threat.
And the Renzo Hughes fight will be a lot of fun to watch, HUGE names in the sport, especially the Gracie family in correlation with the history of Abu Dhabi. These are all three going to be great fights to watch and fight fans should be very excited.
