Gus Johnson: "These Internet Guys Ruin the Sport"

Img_8922a_medium
That was a quote taken from a telephone conversation between Cagepotato's new editor Mike Russell and Strikeforce commentator Gus Johnson. Gus Johnson apparently was enraged over the e-mail Mr. Russell sent to Scott Coker, Gus Johnson's boss.

Hi Scott,

I hope this email finds you well. It was disappointing to see the otherwise great show marred by the incident Saturday night. I hope it doesn't affect the CBS deal.

I was hoping you would comment on Gus Johnson's comments Saturday night that "Strikeforce disrespected Shields" and "continually brought in guys to beat him" and that you "counted him out over and over."

Also, what do you think of his off the cuff remark that brawling and scuffles break out all the time during MMA events?

Will he be working future Strikeforce events on CBS after badmouthing you and your company, or can we expect to see someone more familiar with MMA and who behaves more professionally?

He didn't seem to know the difference between an armbar and a kimura.

Thanks in advance.

I want to go through everything Johnson says and counterpoint all his wild accusations. I want to get this out of the way right now, I have never really been a fan of Johnson's screaming style of calling games. I think it is annoying and fans completely overrate him as a commentator. For MMA and Boxing I think he is even worse, he interrupts Mauro, makes just dumb and out of place statements. I also want it to be know this is my opinion and not MMAforreal.com's opinion. I am sure once Kelvin reads this he will promptly fire and ban me so it was nice talking with you all.

Star-divide

"Scott Coker forwarded me your email. Where do you get off saying that to my boss? Writing it on your website is one thing, but you contacted my boss to ask him about it."

This bothers me because clearly in Johnson's 14 year career nobody has ever questioned what the man has ever said? No "real journalist" has ever had a problem with how he has called a game? And if not, does that mean an Internet journalist puts in more research and work when writing an article and following up on a lead? And why is it a bad thing that someone has questioned your performance Gus? Are you right every time? Do you see no errors when you do play-by-play. Unbelievable and ridiculous.

"Do you even train?...I take jiu-jitsu three times a week. I know the difference between a kimura, an armbar, a reverse armbar and an Americana from side control, because I study it."

This statement said by anyone pisses me off. So what!? Just because you train means only the people that train understand these "secrets." I have been watching MMA for about 5 years now and have only had about 5 months of Jiu-Jitsu training, it doesn't mean that I can't see an Gogoplata is being set up! Look at the interviews he has done. He talks about Jiu-Jitsu every opportunity he can because that is all he knows! I study MMA too Gus and even I know Seth Petruzelli beating Kimbo Slice isn't "the most incredible victory in the history of Mixed Martial Arts." By the way Gus, nice Xtreme Couture shirt.

"As far as people saying that I damaged the image of the sport because of what I said about the shit that went down Saturday night, if anything, it was me trying to make an excuse for these idiots going out on national television and pulling what they did after the card was over. It’s obvious that it happens. People don't need to hear it from me to know that it happens. We've all seen it. I state the obvious, and that’s obvious."

He has a point he does state the obvious. "Make an excuse!?" MMA doesn't need your excuses Gus. What does MMA need to apologize for!? What does MMA have to do with anything that happened in the cage, after the Henderson vs. Shields fight? Nothing. Individuals caused that, not MMA. "It's obvious it happens." Oh really? You study the sport Gus, when was the last time it happened? Gus it is not obvious to the people that have given MMA a chance. It is people like you that have a built in stigma about MMA.

"I take a lot of criticism, but I try my best to try to help promote this fucking sport, when nobody else, including television executives could give two shits because they think it’s barbaric and it’s filled with a bunch of hoodlums, which is exactly how it looked to everyone watching the show Saturday night."

Your job is not to promote the sport! Your job is how you put it "state the obvious." So how about doing your job and doing it well, that will help promote the sport. Gus, I thought you told Matt Bishop "I always had a feeling Showtime would pick this fight [Gina Carano vs. Cristiano Cyborg] up because of their love of MMA and more than that their commitment to MMA." Gus you can't have it both ways, either your lying or just covering your ass. I got a feeling if MMA was really "barbaric and filled with a bunch of hoodlums" and it drew 7 to 8 million viewers consistently CBS executives wouldn't care.

The problem with MMA is that these Internet guys ruin the sport because they’re negative 90 percent of the time. I’ve looked at them. if we give everyone a voice, we wouldn’t get anything accomplished.

Damn Gus you must spend as much time "studying" MMA as you do in other sports. Honestly, I read lots of sports blogs and compared to MMA the sports blogs are VASTLY more negative then ANY MMA blog out their. Go ahead and check them out, Hell check out ESPN half of their content is negative story driven. Dumbass.

"My job isn't to promote the sport. I’m paid to give my opinion and to describe what I see and it’s my opinion that the guys they had Jake fight were supposed to beat him. That's how I see it."

Really? didn't you just say "I take a lot of criticism, but I try my best to try to help promote this fucking sport." Or am I just crazy? Really or were they compelling match-ups that Strikeforce decided to put together for Jake? God forbid you put Jake Shields in tough fights. What do I expect from Gus anyway, man was brought into the Kimbo years when Kimbo was supposed to win every fight.

"Mayhem didn’t do anything that Shane Mosely hasn’t done, or other fighters who aren’t a part of the main event of the card who get in the cage or the ring to hype a future fight haven't done hundreds of times before. Floyd Mayweather wins a fight and Shane Mosley comes into the ring as soon as it’s over and asks when you gonna give me a fight, man? It always happens. That’s not a big deal. The reaction from Gilbert and Jake and all these guys was what was the big deal. It was improper, and to be honest, it was shameful."

Wow! I am mildly shocked you got something right Gus, now please never call another MMA fight ever again. Thanks.

I thought it was more of a rant. So I didn’t post on the frontpage.

I remember when Johnson was on one of the Sherdog radio shows after one of his first calls. He was all eager for compliments.

Jordan Breen gave him some love, then polietly told him that he had incorrectly called a few different kinds of sweeps an “elevator sweep”.

Johnson absolutley blew his lid,and then proceeded to tell Breen that he trained with Renzo Gracie, and if Renzo said a sweep was an elevator, then by God,he was going to call it an elevator.

What I find more hilarious,is that Josh Gross absolutley creamed his jeans when it was announced that Gus Johnson was going to commentate on CBS.He thought just because Johnson was a “pro”,he’d automatically be better than Rogan and Goldie.

Turns out Johnson is about 100 times worse than Rogan on his most stoned out day.Even when Goldie is at his most glib,he’s far,far better than Johnson. And this is from someone who usually can’t stand to listen to UFC commentary.

Originally I thought It was going to stay in the fanpost section, because it was a rant. I should have changed the picture once it got to the front page.

They changed Hendo-Franklin 2

Because Hendo didn’t have a contract, and they couldn’t come to terms in time (or ever,as it turned out).

Had NOTHING to do with fan reaction.Hell, people bitched and moaned about UFC 108 non-stop,and they still served it up,saying “If you don’t like it,don’t buy it.”

Saying they changed that fight due to fan reaction was just nifty PR.It allowed them to cover up the fact that they were in negotiations with Hendo (which no one knew at that time),and throw a bone to the fans.“See,you guys didn’t like the fight,so we changed it!”

It looked a lot better than saying,“Oh,we announced this fight, but it fell through because we couldn’t get a contract done,so here’s Franklin vs Belfort.”

There's some truth to that

but at the same time…you are mistaken if you don’t think the UFC puts out ’feeler’s to judge the response to certain things they wanna do…they read these sites….how else would Dana know who to drop F bombs on…lol…or who to criticize on certain sites he dislikes…

True

But there’s a BIG difference between “feelers”,and officaly announcing a fight on your website.

They officaly announced Hendo-Franklin 2 on UFC.com.That ain’t a feeler.That’s an offical confirmation.

Another thing

Johnson said that baffles me,is how Strikeforce “disrespected” Shields by bringing in guys to beat him.

Ummm,Gus…….Shields in the champion. He’s supposed to fight the best guys. This ain’t boxing, where you fight a bunch of chumps and maybe fight 4 or 5 legit guys in a 50 or 60 fight career if you’re really lucky.

What would be disrespectful would be if Strikeforce rolled out a bunch of C-level opposition, and tried to present them as worthy challengers. But they aren’t.They’re bringing in guys who have a legit shot at beating Shields, and I think Shields likes that-he doesn’t want to fight chumps. He wants to fight the best.

Saying that fighting Top Ten opposition is “disrespectful” is not only bogus,it shows a total disconnect from the sport he supposedly loves and champions.

Good read.

Johnson knows very little about MMA and it shows on every CBS show he is on.

God ain’t that the truth. He’s not a bad commentator at all, and probably does a better job than I would (although you never know!), but the nut-hugging on Johnson is just UNREAL.

Overall a good read

But really, what else would he have done, gone out and said that he did a terrible job? I’m not a fan of Gus Johnson, but he’s not BAD. He’s not that good either, but he’ll get there. He makes bad calls, but that’s natural for someone who’s calling a sport that they’ve only been involved in for a handful of events. Rogan/Goldberg were probably pretty awful their first ten times out, and people dislike them even to this day!

What I think is really funny about this whole thing is that he’s so utterly offended about being called out, then goes onto a radio show of one of these internet news sites (you know the ones that “ruin the sport”?) and fires back at some dudes. A real professional would just let it go, even if they were talking smack about his mother. When I saw this come across my desk yesterday I read through it and thought a lot of the same things that Eveezy did.

Seriously go back and listen to Mike Goldberg at UFC 17 and listen to him now. He has hardly changed in like 7 years. Commentary is a weird thing. You are either good at it or not. And Gus sucks at MMA commentary.

agreed and johnson was trying to get a response out of frank shamrock to give respect to

jake shields after his win over henderson. or was it that other announcer guy? or both. those three guys are all bad imo. i’ll take rogan and goldberg every time.

He won't get better

No one does.

Hell,Mir started off great, back when he did UFC 37 and 50,and then just went to pot once he started doing the WEC.

Mike Goldberg started off in the infancy of the sport (UFC Japan, when Randy Couture won his first belt),and the only thing he’s changed is he’s gotten progessively more glib. That’s it.Going “he just threw a 3-4-2 combo Joe” is not improvement.

Gus Johnson is horrible as a basketball commentator, and he’s worse as an MMA commentator. It is what it is.

Mike Russell posted an apology on The Underground:

An explanation.

Well, I’ve written, deleted and rewritten this FRAT five times in the past 24 hours.

Now that everyone has had the opportunity to critique my article on Gus Johnson, I felt it was the right time to attempt to explain myself.

I know that whatever I write is going to be looked upon as an excuse, but I make no excuse for my lapse in judgment. I’m an adult. I rolled the dice and in an attempt to live up to the edgy, satirical benchmark set for CagePotato’s brand of humor by Ben Goldstein and Ben Fowlkes, I flopped, damaging my reputation and credibility as a journalist and doing exactly what I accused Johnson of doing: representing MMA in a bad light.

First off, I want to say that I honestly and sincerely had no intention of trying to get him fired. Truth be told, I wasn’t even expecting a reply from Coker, which is why I hastily wrote the poorly-worded email, not knowing if I even had his correct email address (which incidentally was a Hotmail address I got from a CC I got from a manager in 2007). My real intention was to hold Gus accountable and to see what repercussions his actions as a member of the media would bring, if any, kind of like the inherent right for readers to hold me accountable for my journalistic indiscretion.

Several people have pointed out that the article actual made Gus look pretty good, which was not totally unintentional on my part. As I mentioned in the article, I actually gained some respect for him for his desire to speak to me. His execution was questionable, as were a few comments he made towards me that didn’t make it into the article, but I can now see that his reaction is understandable considering he was in the heat of the moment.

Did I make a mistake? Yes.
Will it affect my career and my livelihood? Absolutely.

All I can do is move forward, seek penance and try to do what I’ve done for the past five years, which is write stories that are fair, unbiased and entertaining. Getting back into writing news after spending the past two years doing straight features is taking some getting used to. Sometimes the haste to get a story out supercedes the need to get it right. With my features, I sometimes finish them and go back the next day and completely rewrite them if I feel the tone is wrong, which in retrospect is what I should have done with this one.

I respect opinions when they are respectful and insightful, but when those with no tact or a hidden agenda (like past conflict, jealousy of my moderate success as a journalist or coveting my CP gig, for example) it’s sometimes hard to see the forest for the trees. I’d like to thank Uncle Justice for pointing opening my eyes to the ramifications of my poor judgment on my career and the sport and for pointing out that I have always been a big proponent of working under the Journalism Code of Ethics and have done so for 99.9% of my career.

Edgy satire and comedy aren’t for everyone and what one might perceive as being incredibly hilarious, another might find extremely offensive. Reading back over the article, I think I tried to hard to be quirky and ignored the fundamentals of being a decent, responsible writer.

Anyway, I’ve made my peace.

Flame on.

by Lucas2 on Apr 21, 2010 5:51 PM EDT reply actions

Thing I don’t get is that Johnson could have ignored the whole thing and it would have blown over much more quickly, just like the judging fiasco after the Penn fight.
