Sex, Lies, and MMA (sorry, no actual sex)

Yesterday Luke Thomas of Bloody Elbow posted his thoughts on Dana White blatantly lying to the media about Rich Franklin replacing Tito Ortiz on The Ultimate Fighter. I whole-heartedly agree with Luke when he says such action "…undermines and erodes the foundation of honesty that guides the relationship between media and organization."

A lot of people commented on that post asking, why care? I’ll tell you why I care. Being lied to stinks in general, but as a journalist it undercuts your ability to do your job. Let me share an anecdote.

Three years ago I got a paid internship with a medium-sized newspaper. This wasn’t me filing papers and making coffee; I covered stories alongside AP and CNN reporters, had front page lead stories, and even interviewed the Reverend Joseph Lowry, the Civil Rights leader who you might remember as the "Let yellow be mellow" guy who gave the benediction at President Obama’s inauguration. I didn’t screw around.

One day I get a note about the annual Republican fundraiser for the year held by the County Board of Republicans. I sent an email to the chairman to get some info that I could run in a community brief. About two weeks out from the fundraiser he emails me back, saying our governor, Sonny Perdue, would be speaking at the fundraiser. This is a big story for the county and would merit more than just a community brief, so I set aside an entire day to stand in sweltering heat with wealthy old people talking bullshit politics. Guess what? The governor was never going to be there and everyone who received the invitations to the event (sent to registered Republicans two days after the chairman emailed me) never had reason to believe he would. I was used in order to up the press coverage of the event.

Should I have checked with the governor’s office? Of course, but I was 17 and naïve. It's brutal being lied to when your job, your job, is to tell the truth. After that situation I became the Keith Olbermann of Walton County with my Op-Eds over the next three months; it was the only retaliation I had.

Dana White feels he can use this media however he wants to because they desperately need him more than he needs them. And that’s true to a certain extent. But what happens if MMA gets to the point when a title fight is the lead story on SportsCenter? That dog won't fetch. And if he tries it, you can be damn sure ESPN will back up their reporters just like when Tom Rinaldi gets the scoop on a locker room brawl. It will hurt MMA, because the UFC is MMA and Dana White has positioned himself as the UFC. Other sports leagues are not comparable because the UFC is not a league of separate entities with a commissioner. The UFC is a company with a very public face—Dana White.

And as fans, why are you not outraged? I’ve heard the argument, "I just want to watch fights… I don’t really care about what happens behind the scenes." All I can say is I bet your feet feel really good in those sneakers made by a four-year-old in a Thailand sweatshop.

For a guy who supposedly puts most of his stock into fan opinion, he sure does crap on that investment when he says, "The people who felt they’ve been lied to, get over it." Sure, he likely wanted this pointed most toward the media, but at this point the MMA media is primarily fans, probably some of the first fans of the sport and some of the most dedicated. But he also lied directly to the legions that are pigs at his trough over his personal Twitter account. You may not care now, but you sure as hell will when he realizes he can keep lying and you’ll keep eating from his hand.

It’s obvious Dana White didn’t go to Wharton School of Business. That’s primarily the reason so many people relate to him and adore him; he’s one of us, but an authority figure in a business we love. Tact, however, is surely something that he never learned in any manner of education. When a simple "No comment", or from him "What the fuck does Sherdog know?" can suffice, there’s no need to manufacture a narrative.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The same fans that are so endeared to Dana White now will be severely burned once they realize never questioning his unsavory tactics has created an absolute monster of the Vincent Kennedy McMahon sort.

And yeah, the McMahon reference is here just to piss people off.

You should have frontpaged this dawg

I really do get the uproar about White lying…I really do…he could have handled it better for sure….

I mean it’s easy to say that he should have said ‘no comment’ etc, but when you get the SAME repetitive questions over and over and over…I can see why he used the confidentiality agreement from TUF as an excuse to lie if you will…if he had broken the confidentiality agreement….wouldn’t that be a form of lying as well?

Also, when the sport gets(if it gets to this point) mainstream…who’s to say that White wouldn’t handle it differently? It’s all assumption at this point…kinda like that kat that said that Belfort would definitely knock Anderson Silva out had that fought at UFC 112….ok..not quite that bad…you feel me…lol.

Why should I care?

The fact that Dana White was disingenuous with the truth about a fight I couldn’t have cared less for doesn’t strike me as being that big a deal. Am i going to get bent out of shapeeach and every time someone lies to me? No. Life’s too short to be and there’s far more pressing matters in most people’s lives than the integrity of White’s PR machine.

For a man that introduced me to the sport of MMA and who in my estimation largely gives the fans what they want i don’t believe its unreasonable to cut him some slack. Especially when the whole premise of the show I enjoy watching relies on a surprise element for maximum value of said product. I mean its not like anyone bought tickets (as far as i know) under the premise that they were getting Liddell v Ortiz.

Its quite reasonable that fans are more upset with Silva considering his actions directly affected the green they splashed on 112 whereas most fans aren’t going to be losing too much sleep over a main event changing. As for Luke Thomas, yeah my heart bleeds for him…i’m sure he can suck it up and grow a pair i guess. His job didn’t suffer that much, if at all

Rob i dunno

The man has a job to do. Like Kelvin and i alluded to, he’s trying to promote a show which is based on air of secrecy. I think its ridiculous if anybody believes they have a right to know details that compromise the very premise of the show. There’s a lot of fans that are quite ready to grab pitchforks and run to lynch White the minute he “steps out of line”, but they’d do well to remember what he has done for the sport and where his methods HAVE gotten us. There is a method to his madness, yeah it ain’t going to please eveyone but suffice as to say his job is to run the UFC and not be all kinds of everything to everyone. For me, he does a damn fine job and respect the effort he puts in on my behalf. I value it, and appreciate it.

don't get me wrong, I'm generally a DW fan

But if you put yourself in the position of a Meltzer or Helwani, what does this say to about how much DW respects you? “No Comment” is a tenet of journalism, and sure it’s the reporter’s duty to keep following up, but the adroit business man stays at it. I just think White can be a bit too reactionary in certain instances, and go with his gut more than his head.

mmmm

but, imagine a Chris Leben v Jay Silva scenario where hypothetically i buy a PPV because Chris told me he was going to stand and bang with Jay. Low and behold fight night rolls around and he does no such thing…is Chris now accountable to me for being disingenuous with his gameplan?…poor analogy mabe, but i feel it works and no he isnt for any one wondering. lol.

Yes White is undoubtedly reactionary (kelvin might even remeber me going off on him some months back) but this whole tuf 11 things is the least of any axes i have to grind with the man. But who am I? I’m just one man and respect your opinion, and imma rec this article in appreciation of you stimulating good discussion. thanks!

thanks go to you bro

What got me the most was his reaction on Jim Rome yesterday. If he came out and said, “I’m really sorry we had to mislead you guys, but there was a lot of money and a lot of contracts at play, and we were just backed into a corner.”

Instead of that, he basically said “Fuck it, I don’t care what you think.” I love most of his Machiavellian machinations, but a little tact would make me like them more and would also personally help HIM more.

one might argue it doesn’t say much for me (and i’m a big boy and can live with that) BUT i rather enjoyed his front on the show. I’d be lying if i said it wasn’t exactly how i felt (right or wrong). I guess in alot of ways (kind of like you alluded to so well above) i feel i can relate to White. Maybe more so than others…. The only things that tick me off with him his is the excessive profanities (it did get old [i didnt believe it would]) and the WEC pay

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The same fans that are so endeared to Dana White now will be severely burned once they realize never questioning his unsavory tactics has created an absolute monster of the Vincent Kennedy McMahon sort.

I think that the big difference here between the two is that one man is trying to legitimize a sport, and the other is a man who is making money off of a legitimized non-sport. The WWE can get away with semi-lies ane shenanigans because they are, at their core, a entertainment product. This can be contrasted with the UFC, which is a sport that is trying to reach the mainstream, and is being compared to the WWE. There’s always that “card subject to change” tagline, but when the promoter knows something and tells people something else, that’s not covered under that disclaimer, it’s just lieing.

If Dana wants things to go his way he can’t just act all goofy with this stuff, and even though TUF is largely an entertainmnet product, tweeting about how Tito isn’t leaving and whanot doesn’t lend to anyone’s credibility at all. As a casual observer I find it hilarious because this is a guy who whines about not being able to get into MSG, meanwhile he’s got tyrades like this, and goes swearing like a sailor about how fat he’s getting on Pinkberry. Vince McMahon is kinda crazy, but he’s crazy in a very productive manner; he’s obsessive about his product, and presents himself well whenever possible.

Dana White “lied” because he wasn’t going to give away any news on the reality show. That is far different from the invite that was a complete lie about the Govener speaking at an event. It’s a TV show. Dana White didn’t abuse the media in this at all. I won’t give away the ending of the show just because the media demands answears. If that is what you want then go ask him who is in the final fight and not even watch the show.

Dana has always been a huge phony

And an egomaniac, so what would anyone expect? I guess I’m a bit surprised at the outrage because I’ve been complaining about his lying for years. Lying or being a phony is pretty much all he does. I first realized that he is a liar when UFC claimed that Royce Gracie was undefeated going into his fight with Matt Hughes. After that I started paying more attention to the way Dana carried himself. He constantly lies – remember when he said that Lesnar’s mystery illness was mono? And he absolutely does want to be the biggest star in the UFC. He’s a megalomaniac. Asking TUF contestants if they want to be a F&%$ing fighter??? They are already fighters, they just don’t fight in UFC. I could go on and on. Like him acting like he had no idea who Fedor was. And then claiming that Fedor sucks and that the only reason he wanted to sign him was to expose him. There’s a mountain of Dana White’s lies out there. And yes, it bothers me severely! I can’t believe this tool is the face of MMA. That’s the worst part about it. And there is an army of DW apologists out there that haven’t a care about what he does. They support him no matter what. It’s sickening.

I’d like to add that hopefully you guys here aren’t going to get ban happy (like a certain MMA blog), and that I won’t get banned for having an opinion. A certain blog out there needs to realize that there are like a bazillion MMA blogs to choose from, so if they don’t want readership, that can easily be arranged. I know I will be avoiding said blog from now.

I can’t believe this tool is the face of MMA.

that may be so, but, it’s a necessary “evil”. It cannot be a fighter, they can only be a face of a PPV maybe 4 times (tops) a year so he has to fill that void and be that constant. Maybe you do and maybe you don’t but a lot of people fail to realise that the man’s job is to promote and run a business. I would be of the humble opinion that a certain level of disingenuity is par for the course in any business. Where would total honesty get him? yes it might earn your undying respect but your undying respect is not going to promote the UFC or run it for him. If he’s economical with the truth so what, is it actually that detrimental to your existence? Is your day that little bit shittier because Dana told you something loose about Royce or could you just use your own intuition and push on…? It’s sickening for you that people like me are indifferent for the most part to his eccentrics yet, i equally find it rather amusing that you persist in hanging on the every word of a man that clearly grinds your gears? its a strange predicament my friend :)

Well, what can I say – I’m big on principle. I think more should be expected as far as character is concerned in a business figure such him. I do realize that he is running a business, I just think he should be a bit – no – a lot more professional. He can be the face of MMA, he just needs to put on a better face.

I don’t hang on his every word. In fact I don’t pay any attention at all to what he says anymore and haven’t for years. The only way that I know that he says ridiculous stuff like this is through seeing other people talk about him, like on the MMA blogs. I don’t watch any of his video blogs, or any of his interviews. I do just the opposite of hanging on his every word. I avoid hearing what he has to say, because I know it’s the same old garbage he always spews.

Dana lied for a good reason and as Rob stated was an ass when he was asked why. If he had stated that “no comment” will just give it away and i was unable to do that my bad, then yeah not so bad. Me personally i don’t care about this pictular lie and really i believe it is a topic that has been inflated quite a bit.

The fact is Dana is in the clear because the fight was never offically announced and placed on a ticket, just answered questions about it. I don’t think that this hurts anyones creditability seeing as the quotes come from the horses mouth.
