Georges St. Pierre vs. Anderson Silva: The Perfect Setup

I know the Anderson Silva/UFC 112 discussion has been beaten to death, but just one more piece from me.  Over at BloodyElbow, Michael Rome wrote a piece that compared the unwillingness to put together the superfight between welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and middleweight champion Anderson Silva to that of boxing's two premiere players Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.  I have to wholeheartedly agree.  I think the culmination of what transpired at UFC 111 with Georges St. Pierre's spirited effort to show his fans and the world that he could put away opponents in dominant fashion and Anderson Silva's total lack of respect for Demian Maia while still proving to be leaps and bounds a greater fighter would make the perfect storyline.  Vince McMahon would salivate at the opportunity to put together his most revered athlete and his most hated one in an epic battle.  I know though, that most MMA hardcore fans despise the pro wrestling correlation but to be fair, the biggest draws in MMA right now are Brock Lesnar (a former pro wrestler with the look and persona of one) and Kimbo Slice (a character in his own right).  With that said, it's safe to say people pay to see great fights and great fighters but they're drawn to those fighters with 'personality'.  It's the same reason a guy like Tito Ortiz, well beyond his heyday, can still draw viewers to the screen.

In a potential Georges St. Pierre/Anderson Silva bout, we have the classic 'hero vs. villain' scenario.  GSP is one of those fighters that you watch and it's hard not to like him because you can tell he takes the sport serious and he thrives to be the best.  With Anderson Silva, you have a fighter that has shown and proven to be quite possibly pound for pound the best fighter that mixed martial arts has ever seen, but his flashiness and at times lack of respect for his opponent plays a major role in the duration of his fights, making his artistic techniques seem silly and childish as he drags out the disrespect unnecessarily.  Thus, placing these two inside of a cage now, would probably send most MMA blogsites into a meltdown due to the overwhelming hype that it would generate.  Fans would flock to see if GSP could humble the now dubious 'Spider' and prove that hardwork and respect outweighs pure talent; and in the same vein fans would flock to see if Anderson is just simply THAT good and how he'll show up in a fight with someone as regarded as himself.  This practically markets itself!

Finally to show my true inner nerd, we've seen Anderson Silva wear the Venom shirt many times in his trainings.  That's a good assessment as Anderson Silva could easily be the Venom to Georges St. Pierre's Spider-Man.  In the comic's though, Spider-Man had one heck of a time putting away Venom but finally got the job done.  I could see that scenario playing out exactly like that in the octagon.

LOL Good Stuff

I liked the Spiderman analogy. We will see how well Kimbo draws on PPV. Me thinks not so well. But who knows?

haha

How can GSP be spider-man when Silva is the Spider though?

I thought about that, but Silva always wears that Venom shirt….so he must be down with Venom more than Spiderman

HUHHHH???
. . . but his flashiness and at times lack of respect for his opponent plays a major role in the duration of his fights, making his artistic techniques seem silly and childish as he drags out the disrespect unnecessarily.

Uhmmm . . . How often has Anderson Silva dragged out the disrespect unnecessarily?

  • Cote: I didn’t see Cote as a challenger press the action like Frankie Edgar did against BJ Penn. There was action in the 2nd round. Cote didn’t fall Silva’s tricks but Silva did attack. Cote couldn’t continue in the beginning of the third.
  • Leites: Was Thales Leites even a challenger? Was he a fighter trying to win the fight or defeat the champion? Sure he had one moment where he scored a takedown and attempted a submission BUT that was his only real offense in a 5 round fight. Did Silva disrespect Leites by trying to engage him in a fight and avoid his strength in a BJJ match?

Outside of his UFC 112, who else did Anderson Silva disrespect in a match? Or are we re-writing history?

well since most people think he’s going to fight like that from now on…I’m judging from the Maia fight only…I don’t think Anderson’s really disrespectful, just a little cocky at times

Ok . . . at least you admitted that because that’s basically what everybody is more or less implying, if not flat out saying.

I guess I shouldn’t be shocked because the many people feel GSP vs Fitch = GSP vs Alves = GSP vs Hardy.

Dana White did say “this is the 3rd time he’s done this.” WHICH IS, in my opinion, TRULY F* UP, you can not blame the champion for Cote’s unwillingness to engage and his injury, which he (and probably Joe Silva) was definitely aware of.

I’m just waiting for a crazy-super match like Anderson Silva vs. Fedor or Brock Lesnar . . . “WHY DIDN’T HE JUST FINISH LESNAR!?! He made Lesnar’s knee buckle . . . he had him!!!”

lol, I think the reason why Dana’s so reluctant to put Anderson against GSP is because he knows deep down Anderson would thrash him….and GSP’s one of his major draws, can’t have them getting spanked…and if Anderson did that to GSP @ 170…..even worse

  • For me the real cool thing about Silva vs GSP is at least I KNOW FOR A FACT that GSP will get one or two takedowns. Now what will he be able to do with it . . . I don’t know.
  • And the other cool thing about this potential fight is we might see more of GSP’s stand-up which we haven’t seen in quite a while.
  • There’s also a strong chance that the weight cut will completely mess up Silva and GSP will totally own him . . . and maybe even stop him.

I don’t know about at 170…because he’d probably be half dead…but 185….I don’t think GSP can hold him down and will get punched repeatedly

thing is

Silva loves to body triangle folk…so aint’ like he really tries to get up….man…if GSP beat Anderson Silva…he would become another Brock Lesnar in regards to PPV….

It’s kind of wacky.

But it would tie up a lot of loose ends right now.
