ouch
cant blame the guy for stopping, how could u really do any damage with a broken hand like that.
I think you guys are letting how likable Bowles is cloud your judgment. He was clearly getting beaten to the point he was looking for a way out. Does that mean he has no heart? Not in my book. Does that mean he’s not a good fighter? I think Miguel Torres and I would agree that he’ s a good fighter. Does that mean he’s not a great fighter? I don’t know but i think it’s reasonable for people on an MMA website to discuss that.
In the post-fight interview he said all he could think about was his hand and not the fight. Rather than saying that Cruz fought a great fight and that he was completely frustrating him the entire time, this is why he says he was losing the fight. In addition to the countless number of people who have fought through a broken hand or two, you know who else was able to? According to Loretta Hunt, Dominick Cruz was able to last night.
Also, you need to consider the significance of this fight. If this were just a regular fight, I don’t think anyone outside of the Sherdog forums would have disagreed that it’s better to not take unnecessary damage. However, this was a fight for the title. For fighters, this is it. This is what years of training and sacrifice were for. In the bantamweight especially, this is it. I think people are not being unreasonable when they say that they’d expect someone to put up more of a fight before that title was taken away from them.
The point I’m trying to make here is that people need to stop getting so upset when people raise these questions about Bowles. This does not mean that I don’t like Bowles or that I was rooting for Cruz. I’ve actually been a big fan of his since I saw him fight Charlie Valencia. In fact, as Kelvin could attest, Brian Bowles and I have almost the exact same haircut. I’m not saying this makes me the president of his fan club, but I think it at least entitles me to a seat at the table.
Oh, I don’t get upset in the least bit and I understand that there will be folks that question why Brian didn’t fight the third round with the broken hand. And you bring up some good points, especially about the magnitude of the fight. I had no idea that Dominck fought with a broken hand. That’s very impressive indeed if that’s the case and he was clearly winning the fight. I remember Faber fighting with two of them. The only difference I can point to there (if any exists) is that Faber often uses his wrestling to set up his attacks and maybe he felt that he could still have a great chance of winning even with the broken hands, whereas Brian does rely on that right hand as a key part of his offense. Again, though, you make great points and that’s what we want here at MMA For Real. Good honest discussion, and critique of fights. Your take is a good one.
“In fact, as Kelvin can attest, Brian Bowles and I have almost the exact same haircut.”
In Junior High there were a few weeks where I rocked the Miguel Torres look. Couldn’t pull it off as well, though. It might have been the Member’s Only jacket.
If this was Wilson Gouveia or Denis Kang we are talking about I would be right there with you. They have a HISTORY of wilting when it counts most for them. But to say after 1 bad preformace that a fighter with only 8 total pro fights and has never been put in that situation before has no heart, is just bad judgement in my opinion. I’m not saying you don’t have a right to voice your opinion, I am just challenging it. Who knows you could be right, Bowles my never get another crack at the title. I just think it is foolish to say right now that he doesn’t have the heart of a champion. Props to Cruz for fighting with and broken hand and winning the belt.
