Dana White: We Won't Make A Freakshow Out Of James Toney In The UFC
Dana White spoke about the recent signing of James Toney to the UFC with Yahoo Sports. Check it:
"We threw the kitchen sink at Brock when he came in. Are we going to do that same thing with James? I don’t know. To be 100 percent honest with you, all [expletive] aside, I haven’t thought it out."
"I like James Toney. He’s one of the greatest boxers ever. I have tremendous respect for him. He said he wanted to fight in the UFC and I was interested. Now he’s here and I have to figure out what to do with him. What we won’t do is make a freak show out of it. I’d be the first to scream if someone else did that, so I’m not going to do it."
White communicated that Toney was in talks with Strikeforce:
"We’ll figure something out. I’m not really sure. Here’s the thing with James: We were sitting around finishing the deal and talking and he told me that he’d been talking to Strikeforce. He said they were talking to him about a fight with Herschel Walker. James said to me, ‘Do you know what I’d do to that [expletive]?’ He looked at me and said, ‘You know, I have a lot of pride and I’d never do anything to embarrass myself. I’m a fighter. I want to fight. And don’t ever underestimate me.’ "
So who will James Toney fight? Will the UFC provide Toney with a striker in his first bout, or will they feed him to a wrestler or BJJ guy. In regards to the signing, I think it's pretty crazy considering Toney's age and 'baggage' if you will. However, our very own Rich Wyatt made a good point in the comments section of another post:
At the end of the day, it’s about bringing it into the cage and throwing down. I don’t care what background you come from. I don’t care what combat sports discipline you come from. I just want to see talented fighters from all styles mix it up. I don’t care who they are or, in some cases (not naming any names), how annoying they are. Just get in the cage and bring it.

How So?
Toney was a professional boxer with a winning record. He’s no different from the number of wrestlers, kickboxers, judo and BJJ practitioners that enter MMA. The biggest difference between Toney and the rest of them is his name, and yes his age . . . but I’m just saying.
It’s not like Brock Lesnar entered MMA as fresh spring chicken. We all know that Kurt Angle, old as he is, was in constant talks with Dana White. Freak show, not really.
Mark Coleman vs. Randy Couture?? Close to freak show status.

I do agree he’s a bit old to be starting a UFC career, but Toney is not a freak show. They say that about Herschel Walker and Jose Canseco because they are NOT FIGHTERS lol. Toney is a boxing heavyweight who’s won 72 of 78 professional fights, in a discipline that is a major portion of MMA. Maybe he hasn’t been in there with the best in the world lately but there are a lot of boxers who fight tomato cans and don’t have a 72-6 record…
welcome to the site JoeDan
I agree…holding a blackbelt in TKD that you could have received from who knows…isn’t the same as Toney’s boxing pedigree. I’m not thrilled to see Toney in the UFC…that’s for certain…BUT dude has way more fighting experience than Walker and Canseco….

DW will feed him an old guy
Is it to late to call Mark Coleman? I see a Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell. Something of that ilk

nah
they won’t risk Couture or Liddell losing to someone like Toney IMO…not that they would lose…just saying.

You mean, Toney actually strung FOUR coherent sentences together?

I wonder what kinda contract the UFC has in place for Toney..
I’m sure its a Kimbo-esque deal and he’s getting paid quite a bit. Perhaps a cut from PPV revenue even.

That’s the rumor. Couture’s name has been mentioned but it could also be that they put him in there with a gatekeeper type fighter.
I hope I'm the first guy they call to fight tony ! :)
Not a rumor . . . Randy tweeted that he would like to test himself against Toney.

True. Check out Toney’s promoter Dan Goosen chiming in:
Dan Goossen, Toney’s long-time friend and promoter, was disappointed to learn the news. The contract with the UFC allows Toney to continue to box and Goossen said he had conversations with Toney earlier this week about a boxing match next month.
"Let’s face it: There are some bad – meaning good – fighters in MMA, no ifs, ands or buts about it," Goossen said. "There are a lot of wrestlers who are fighters now and James is not a wrestler. He’s a standup fighter; he’s a boxer. His skills are standing up. There’s not an MMA fighter in the world who could fight James on his court, in the ring, and be able to stay with him."
"But this is like something I said to Pete Rose the other day: As great a hitter as Pete was, and he’s one of the greatest who ever lived, do you think he would be the all-time hit king in cricket? It’s still hitting a ball with a stick, but they’re completely different sports."
"Boxing and MMA are fighting sports," Goossen said. "They’re related, but they’re different sports. You need different skills in each of them. As great as James is, he’s not going to be as good of a wrestler as the guys he faces. He can’t cram into a six-, eight-, 12-week training camp what they’ve been doing all their lives. He’s definitely going to be at a disadvantage and I don’t want to see him being used."
Put Toney against a heavyweight beast and completely end the discussion. Toney talks a lot of crap, give him a real welcoming party. Not a can like the guy Herschel Walker faced but a big heavyweight.
