Report: James Toney Signs With The UFC

James Toney

From fiveouncesofpain:

FiveOuncesofPain.com has been informed through sources close to the situation that James Toney has recently been signed to a multi-fight contract with the UFC

It's not clear when James Toney will make his UFC debut.  I'm kind of short on time right now, but I'll be back with my thoughts on this.  However, feel free to state your opinion in the comments section.

I’ve seen the major outlets report this now.

I’m stil convinced it’s a major conspiracy to fool me that will culminate April 1st.

oh well.

I think it may bring alot fo james toney fans over from boxing . Just like brock brought many wwa fans with him. If it will help the ufc grow then so be it. Although I dont think he will stand a chance it will show boxing fans that this is the real deal.

Man...

Remember a few days ago when I was beating up Strikeforce for making stupid fights that Dana would crap all over? Yeah, let’s go ahead and put a “nevermind” stamp on that one. I’m gonna go ahead and declare shenanigans.

You aren’t comparing signing Hall of Famer James Toney to signing Jose Canseco, though, right?

A little

But not totally. I mean, from what little I know about Toney is that he wasn’t a great boxer, and that was when he was in his prime. A has-been is a big step up from a has-never-been.

James Toney is notorious for being lazy and not having the greatest training camps. He got bailed out by his natrual althletisum and power. If you hear anything about him taking MMA seriously or “he is a quick learner” its a lie. But he certainly can knock the hell out of you if you aren’t careful.

James was not only a great boxer. He was better in his base combat sport than just about any current MMA fighter was in theirs with some notable exceptions (i.e. Demian Maia, etc…). I don’t think that James has much chance at all in any high level of MMA but it won’t be because he lacked boxing skills. There was a long period of time where he was on Ring Magazine’s pound for pound world ranking list on the regular. Strikeforce can sign Jose Canseco, Bill Buckner or Carrot Top. But it will be way more of a joke than James Toney. At least he was a multi-time world champion at the elite level in a combat sport.

I know that this moves makes a lot of people angry, but I actually kind of like it. I’ll go into more of why later, but let me say this for now: At the end of the day, it’s about brining it into the cage and throwing down. I don’t care what background you come from. I don’t care what combat sports discipline you come from. I just want to see talented fighters from all styles mix it up. I don’t care who they are or, in some cases (not naming any names), how annoying they are. Just get in the cage and bring it.

Agreed.

As someone said before…if this helps the sport grow, I really don’t mind this at all. Business is business and James Toney will put asses in seats and contribute some worthy PPV numbers. Let’s hope he doesn’t embarrass himself his first time out.

33 Wins. Yeah, I said it.

Speachless

…. wow. Buddy of mine at the Y and I spoke about this. Please let him fight Big Country right of the bat. That would be a blow to the ego.

Unashamedly biased for Team Superior here in Conover/HKY.

Walker is in his 40’s and has had multiple martial arts black belts, but Dana says that that guy is a joke. Then signs this 40-something former pro to make an MMA debut?

and furthermore……

Personally I’m more intrigued to see Ricardo Mayorga in Shine against Din Thomas.

Mayorga is closer to his prime, and he is stepping in against a legit badass in his first fight. Toney is sure to get a hand picked tomato can similar to Herschel Walker’s.
