UFC 112: PPV Disaster?

UFC 112: PPV Disaster?

On the surface, 112 should have everything a hard-core and even casual fan should want. Two title defenses featuring pound for pound greats and a fan favorite: Matt Hughes. Not to mention, the last time Silva and Penn were featured on a pay-per-view together, the UFC got nearly one million buys, and that was without Hughes. Cha-ching!

But hold the phone, a closer look at the situation at 112 could be foreboding for the UFC. The first thing to consider is that a great deal of success for UFC 101 could very well be attributed to riding the wave of excitement and hype coming off of UFC 100. Before 101, Silva had proven to be a ratings clunker. You must also consider the opponent for Silva. Griffin has always been a big ratings draw, especially when in his cherished "under dog" role. The UFC did a great job of pushing Griffin as the fan favorite with a real avenue to win: expose Silva’s wrestling using his size. At 112 Silva will be facing a much different opponent. First, we have to look at the fact that his last two middleweight title defenses were fan disasters and that 112 marks the champ's first fight at middleweight since those disasters. Speaking of  Silva's defenses, the UFC is taking a big risk of generating interest by putting him in the cage with another jiu-jitsu specialist after his atrocious fight with Thales Leites. Add in to that the confusion from casual fans who last saw Maia being back flipped by Nate Marquardt on Sports Center, and things could get bad.

Star-divide

But what about Penn? He’s proven to be a consistent draw for most of his career and could be the lynchpin for 112’s success. Well, in all of Penn’s big PPV fights theres been some kind of selling point. At 84, it was the number one and number two lightweights in the world who legitimately disliked each other, finally getting into the cage. At 94 it was a no-brainer, GSP vs Penn 2 was a superfight and had some of the most hype in the history of the sport, and at 101 Penn was coming off of the embarrassing beat down from GSP which made  him look human and by extension, made Florian look like an interesting challenger. After dominating Florian you saw a little bit of the interest fade in BJ Penn title defenses when the PPV buys dropped by 300,000. Now after completely destroying the much hyped Sanchez and simultaneously dispelling the myths of his lacking cardio, could Penn be in the same "no interesting challengers" boat as GSP and Silva? Plus, we have to look at the fact that Edgar has the personality of a brick wall and doesn’t have that big "selling point" that Maia has with his grappling and Hardy has with his power. Everything that Edgar does good, Penn already does great, so what would be the point in a lot of fans eyes?

Finally we have the third "big bout" of the night, Matt Hughes vs Renzo Gracie. I think the ability of this fight to draw numbers rests on the UFC’s ability to sell the Gracie vs Hughes angle. Because, on paper, Renzo is mediocre fighter who has never fought anywhere near the UFC, and has not competed since 2007. Hughes has had his ups and downs in PPV sales  but the general consensus is that he draws. But If the fans perceive him to be fighting a nobody, this fight could be a dud as well.

If all of that isn't enough to make you worried, you need to consider that this will be an overseas PPV for the UFC. A type of show that typically does mediocre in terms of sales. People will say that I very well could be eating my words in the weeks following April 10th, but right now, I think UFC 112: Invincible could be surprising folks for all of the wrong reasons.

of course i will buy it but

im not to interested in the title fights, cake walks for both of them. It is time for both of these guys to move up in wieght and bring on some more interesting fights. Also after 111 I hope to see gsp move up as well., If all three of these guys move up , the ufc will be much more exciting thats for sure!!!!

Yea

I’ve been saying this will be a pivotal PPV…I don’t expect it to do huge numbers at all…simply because of it being a foreign card. If they could get close to 400K PPV’s…it would be a slamdunk for them IMO….because UFC 113, 114, 115, and 116 will do very good numbers….barring changes to the card.

isn’t this the week tiger woods returns to the masters so there will be zero news coverage of the card

dave..it is

but I really don’t think being in the ‘news’ is that big of a deal in regards to PPV….UFC 71, UFC 91 and some other shows were all over ESPN…and then shows like UFC 107 were not…and still did very good numbers…plus with it being overseas…the news wasn’t going to cover this anyways for the most part.

I’ more excited about 112 then any of these other cards. You’re probably right I do see the Silva/Maia fight going exactly like the Silva/Leites fight but honestly I didn’t think watching that fight was that bad I never expected Leites to put up much of a fight anyway. Until 101 that Leites fight was the most embarrassing thing i’d ever seen happen to a fighter, Anderson had no respect for him he was just toying with him because he didn’t want to fight. The Penn fight will be good too, Edgar’s boxing is pretty good and maybe he can actually implement the strategy that Florian tried against Penn( The Randy Couture Method of fighting) that being said I think Penn doesn’t fuck around in this fight I think he finishes Edgar ASAP. And Matt is one of my favorite fighters ever, he’s gonna smash Renzo.( You think after he does people start hyping him as another gracie hunter)

Global Event

Ok, maybe the PPV numbers may not be really great but here’s what might bode well for UFC 112.

  • THE GOVERNMENT ARE FANS. They have more international contacts.
  • Demian Maia is not Thales Leites. It is safe to say that many fighters learned the lessons of Kalib Starnes, Thales Leites and Houston Alexander.
  • BJ Penn is an exciting fighter. Edgar is no push-over.
  • The Gracie name. Yes, he’s not a great fighter.
  • The under-card features Munoz, Paul Taylor, Grove, Phil Davis, & Rick Story. A good number of international fighters.

if demian learned his lesson against Marquardt that should mean he doesn’t come in guns blazing. Irvin and Forrest got dismantled that way. putting Maia against Silva who won’t engage a guy dangerous on the ground ala Leites was a stupid move by the UFC brass. the only way it’s entertaining is if Silva doesn’t fight like he did against Leites and if Maia doesn’t do what he did against Marquardt…neither of which I see happening.

I don’t know how the card will turn out, but to me the setting of a UFC show being outdoors-in a setup created specifically for the show-in a new and exotic market (I’ll presume the crowd will be into it, given those ADCC competitions) is of interest. Sure, two title fights in a foreign market on a pay per view that many will see on tape delay (if not illegal streaming) is not a good idea, but when billionaire oil sheiks want to have that kind of card in their homeland AND they own part of your company, you’re going to listen to them.

As for the card, Silva vs. Maia is not a fight I really want to see (it’s a shame that Vitor got hurt), but you know that the new Arab owners (BJJ fans) want to see a BJJ fighter in the bout and someone who has competed in multiple ADCC tournaments, so it was a natural to go with him rather than, say, Akiyama. Not having to deal with him and his goofy management/big demands is another plus. I’ll presume that Silva ends up winning, as will BJ. Who knows how Edgar will do, but I’ll be stunned if he somehow wins. Gracie vs. Hughes will be interesting, if only for historical purposes. The rest of the card is mainly the type of fights you’d expect on a Europe show, although Phil Davis vs. Alexander Gustafsson is something I’m interested in.

Overall, I hope the show turns out to be an entertaining one.
