Around SBN: Bob Sapp Denies Throwing Fights

UFC on Versus 1 thoughts

I’ll preface this by reminding everyone that Wege went 4-0 on these picks. (golf clap)  This was a very wacky card which seemed like a nightmare for Versus.  The first live fight we see James Irvin crying about getting punched, screaming "fuck," all while the crowd rains down the boos.  Yikes.  They follow that calamity with an even bigger (sloppier) one.  Paul Buentello and Cheick Kongo….  Why was this on television?  Why are they ever on television?  Clay Guida choking out some guy is shelved so we can see Paul "amber alert" Buentello try to eek out a living against Kongo and his ceaseless mediocrity?  Unforgivable.  These first fights were awful and the brass really needs to start having the conversation of why having somewhat big names is more important than putting on exciting fights.  My dogs may be permanently scarred from me screaming at the TV last night.

Now, let’s get into the meat of these fights.  While I was sitting in my smoking chair, doing the evil finger pyramid, I started laughing so hard I managed to spill my snifter of brandy all over my pearl carpet.  Junior dos Santos had claimed another victim. Everything is going according to plan.  JDS has knocked out another big name, catapulting himself to the top of hype mountain, and the sweet sweet betting lines that go with it.  Finally some potential betting value!  I think this will be some great money down the line as JDS will absolutely be over-valued for his next fight, hopefully meeting up with Cain Velasquez.  Look at that fight again.  Look at JDS’ right hand when he throws his left.  That is money in the bank, and exactly the kind of thing potential opponents will be drooling over.

As for the main event there really isn’t much to say.  I was very disappointed that we didn’t get treated to more of a great fight, but you have to give Jones his props.  He looked all-world against Vera and broke three bones in the man’s face.  EEESH.  We’ll have to keep an eye on him and I can’t wait to see who the UFC pairs him with next.

So he dropped his hand?

What was Gabe gonna throw an Ultimate Punch? No the Cain/JDS fight does need to happen. I would still give JDS the advantage on the stand up but Cain could definatley put him on his ass

When are they gonna figure it out?

It would be nice to see somebody not try to stand with Dos Santos, I mean considering the strikers he’s beat why would you wanna bang with him

I don’t think you can invest much in JDS countering a body kick by moving his hands from his face. I’ll take a look at his last couple of fights to see if he does this every time he lands a combo. Interesting for sure.
