Report: Gilbert Melendez vs. Shinya Aoki On Strikeforce Card In Nashville

Strikeforce lightweight championGilbert "El Nino" Melendez

Josh Gross's Twitter Account:

Multiple sources confirm Gilbert Melendez will fight Shinya Aoki on the April 17 CBS card in Nashville.

While this is a fight that will satisfy many hardcore fans, it's still not a huge ratings draw for Strikeforce although it looks to be a good card on paper thus far.  This event could potentially feature 3 title fights:

-Shinya Aoki vs. Gilbert Melendez

-Gegard Mousasi vs. King Mo Lawal

-Dan Henderson vs. Jake Shields

Give me your thoughts on the Melendez/Aoki match up.  Do you think Aoki will wear the the same type of gear that George Sotiropoulos sported at UFC 110, since he can't wear this rainbow pants?

Very interesting matchup. Props to Strikeforce and DREAM for making this happen. I’m guessing that Aoki will use the same attire that Sotiropolous used. This is a big opportunity for Gilbert and one that he’s been waiting for a long time.

Sick

I'm gonna make a bold prediction here and say Cain "pillowhands" (as some of you have called him) lol Velasquez catches Nog right on the chin and finishes via strikes on the ground. Nog looked good against an old Randy. It didn't show me much. We’ll see.

Dopeness.

But man, that’s kind of a big risk for both organizations.

Yes i love the matchup

I wonder what the rankings will be if Melendez beats Aoiki, Will melendez stock go up or will most people then think Aoiki was over rated? Personally after i seen Melendez beat up on thompson, I think he has arrived, Hs training parterns are diaz and sheilds. One of the best strikers and sumbision artists in the game IMO .

In my case, a little bit of both — Aoki is still fairly 1-dimensional.

To me it would be a pretty impressive win stylistically for Aoki – to hang in the upper echelon of the LW-division you have to be able to deal with spraw-n-brawl tactics.

As far as Melendez’ standing is concerned if he loses, I wouldn’t worry too much as most outlets rank Aoki as the #2 LW (at least top 5). Melendez would probably remain at the lower end of the top 10 or just outside the list.

Aoki is about to have a train run on him. Surprised Dream made this happen.

Yeah, I’m also kind of sitting here with the feeling that Aoki will be soundly defeated… Still, this happens outside of Japan (ie not at all as far as Japanese fans are concerned) so in a way Aoki/Dream can afford a loss more than Melendez/Strikeforce.

Yeah

Dream has two cards (I think) in three months so why would they let there biggest draw in Aoki not fight on the card? I heard a romour that Dream may go to PPV. Dumb idea IMO

i think melendez’ limited grappling (limited in terms of submissions, not his good top game) means Aoki will do wi/out his pants without much to fear. i’ll believe this fight when it actually happens.

Gatti. Dekkers. Pele. Aoki. Kang. Vanderlei. Basillio. Harry Greb.

Like EVeezy, I’m really surprised that Dream actually gave up Aoki for the fight, and am still waiting for someone to break news that he’s off the card.

Good fight though.. they’re the best lightweights in their respective organizations, but I’m curious what will happen if Aoki wins the title, because I don’t think Dream is going to give him up that frequently.
