Germany Bans UFC Broadcasts

It was last June when the UFC made its way over to Germany for UFC 99 and the show was met with some resistance from officials. the show was entertaining one which featured Rich Franklin earning a decision victory over former Pride smashing machine Wanderlei Silva.

It appears as though the successful show did not help in keep the sport on the air waves. Sherdog is reporting that the UFC has been banned from German Television.

"The committee deems that television formats characterized by the extend of violence shown to be unacceptable," read a statement from the BLM. The BLM also described the programming as a "breach of taboos like punching a downed opponent," which is illegal under article 111a of the Bavarian constitution. The paragraph deals with the glorification of violence in the media.

Thus far, it is not known what will become of the deal in which UFC has that allows for 500 hours of UFC programing to be shown.

The UFC and DSF reached an agreement in February 2009 to air around 500 hours of UFC programming over the next three years.

"We have been monitoring this development together with our partner DSF for a couple of weeks," said the release. "Although we are not surprised by the decision, we consider it unusual to take action without listening to the concerning parties first."

It seems as though Germany just does not want the sport to get a strong foothold due to its violent content. I am sure images such as this one did not help the cause any. Although the UFC ban is currently under way it looks as though DSF will broadcast the up coming UFC on Versus show.

lol

my buddies always bring up how distasteful striking a downed opponent is and i can kind of see where they’re coming from… but having a humble appreciation for bjj i dont share it, but it amuses me no end for some strange reason when i hear about it

i find it darkly humorous/amusing or something to be avidly following a sport that is widely regarded by the “general” public as being excessively violent and unscrupulous… ha :)

Whenever people complain about striking a downed opponent

I calmly explain to them that the only reason they see this as “bad,” is because they assume that the downed opponent is helpless, and they are needlessly inflicting damage on a helpless individual.

Then I show them a fight like Davis/Taylor or Condit/Larson, and show them how the downed opponent is far from helpless, and the change in terrain actually works in their favor.

If they still disagree after that, I give up.
