Will the Versus-DirecTV Deal Reinvigorate the WEC's Ratings?
Promoted To The Frontpage From Fanposts By Kelvin Hunt
Following the poor ratings performance of WEC 47: Bowles vs. Cruz, Zuffa's smaller promotion was surely thrilled to learn of some good news as it limps toward its first pay-per-view on April 24. Today Comcast, which owns the channel, and DirecTV reached an agreement which would return the Versus to the DirecTV lineup after months of anguish for MMA fans with the satellite provider.
The deal comes as welcome relief for the promotion which showcases smaller weightclasses with minimal starpower, as MMA Junkie spoke to the WEC's Vice President Peter Dropick today:
"We're excited that Versus is back on DirecTV, and it allows the WEC fans to see our fights," Dropick said. "There are 14 million fans who were missing out for a few months, but we're excited that we're back up."
The WEC and Versus first teamed up in June 2007 with its debut broadcast, WEC 28, which drew 416,000 viewers. Despite steady growth – the WEC had a record-breaking WEC 34 event (1.54 million viewers) a year after that first airing – the five WEC shows since DirecTV pulled Versus from the lineup barely averaged that initial audience (435,200 viewers per event).
Although WEC 47 lacked the promotion's one true star, Urijah Faber, it did feature former Bantamweight champ Miguel Torres and legend Jens Pulver en route to pulling a very disappointing 373,000 viewers. As the promotion moves forward, hopefully the new deal with DirecTV will bump up those ratings and position the WEC as a showcase event should Comcast decide to transform Versus into NBC Sports.

Good stuff RDS
I think it’ll impact them moderately…which is crazy…because out of an additional 14 million…you’d THINK that the WEC could find another 600K or so to break the 1 million mark consistently…yet…they’ve only done that once…with Pulver/Faber 1.(prior to the Comcast/DirecTV) debacle.

Thanks Kelvin
I think Versus just has seen no push behind it or anything they air. It’d be great for them to get some NHL on Versus ads during Sunday NBC games and anytime on ESPN. Likewise I’d like to see WEC commercials plastered all over Spike. Versus needs more viewers overall, and that rising tide will lift the WEC boat. Hopefully Comcast has big plans for the channel
We're just a million little gods causin' rain storms, turning every good thing to rust.

How do they calc, bars and restaurants in total viewership? Is it number of TV sets or estimated number of viewers?

![From MMAJunkie.com:
Strikeforce heavyweight and former NFL great Herschel Walker (1-0 MMA, 1-0 SF) suffered a deep cut in training and has been forced to withdraw from next month's "Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu" event.
Strikeforce officials today confirmed the change with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).
Featuring a light heavyweight matchup between Dan Henderson and Renato "Babalu" Sobral, "Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu" takes place Dec. 4 and airs on Showtime.
"I feel terrible about this," Walker stated in today's official release. "I know things like this happen in all sports, but I had trained very hard and was excited to be returning to the cage again."
Walker had been expected to face one-time WEC veteran Scott Carson (4-1 MMA, 0-0 SF).
According to Strikeforce officials, a Daniel Cormier knee strike opened a "deep cut under [Walker's] left eye that required multiple stitches"...
Despite the setback, Walker said he hopes to return to action quickly.
"I hope to fight again as soon as the cut heals," Walker said.](http://cdn3.sbnation.com/fan_shot_images/161814/herschel-walker-2_small.jpg)
