Strikeforce's last stand: Out on the Shield is Better Then Limping With Freaks.
MMA in the sports world is barely out of diapers and yet we see washed up stars start to try and get in bed with it already. I mean Jose and his foolish campaignto get into a fight with Walker? Joke written all over it. Strikeforce are guilty of throwing a few freak shows around to try and get some eyes on their promotion, but what impresses me is what is about to happen. Strikeforceis willing to go out with real fightersthen with a group of freak show fights.
April 17th is what some predict as D day for Strikeforce, if that show tanks then Coker and company are on the unemployment line. Strikeforce deserves some credit for actually putting such a pivotal show on the shoulders of actual fighters and not a bunch of over the hill athletes looking to get in a legal scrap. There are a few ways Coker could have done this show that would have no doubt got more guaranteed eyes then what they are going to put off, but if the show done well it would have been the spectacle of the sport that sold and not the sport itself. Walker is an interesting personality and yes a class act all the way not bashing on him. I will compare it to the hate on Kimbo that people have.
Kimbo showed himself to be nothing but humble during his stay in Elite XC, but yet there were fans every where stomping in a child like rage due to the hype around him. I am one who was annoyed by Kimbo's laughable chance of becoming a top 15 Heavy Weight, but my hate came not for him directly but what he overshadowed which as every one else. Kimbo made his way onto the cover of ESPN the magazine while guys like Randy Couture have been fighting for years and never got so much as a block quote. It was an insult to the sport not because Kimbo was BAD but because he was featured as a representative of a sport he did nothing to build. Thats my beef with Kimbo which really should not be a beef with him seeing as he is just trying to make a dollar but hey i got to direct my hate towards something, he was an easy target.
Back to Strikeforce which has all the possibilities of throwing Lashley out there against some other can or even if he fought Walker which would garner quite the buzz and the WWE fanboys would get to use their boner as a pogo stick in anticipation but that's not the case. Coker seems to have the mind set that if he goes out hes going out on his Shield and with what Shields showed us last time it may be a little literal after its all said and done. Coker has all the freaks in the cage and is able to let them lose to make people clap like seals at the monstrosity that they would be witnessing , but he has his steeds on display.
I for one am happier with this card then the one that had Fedor on it. Sure Fedor is a nice thing to see, but seeing him faced guys that are thought to have no chance is starting to get a little old. I welcome the Aoki/Melendez fight with open arms. It is a fight that matters while a Fedor against Werdum win would be just another number on Fedors record.
Many are saying that Strikeforce made a mistake when making the current card and while they maybe right. If any two combinations of the title fights go the distance of even all three it can become and time nightmare for the slot on CBS. If the fights not only go the distance and they are about as interesting as clipping toe nails it is a double wammy. Is the show risky? Yeah you better believe it is. Does is stay true to the sport? also yes i must rather see Strikeforce go out trying to showcase real fighters then cripple Canseco as one crutch and Walker as the other.

Well
I said that SF needed to put all of their championship fights on this card…if they could have gotten Walker on this card with that…that would have given them the ‘ump’ they needed ratings wise…either way…they don’t have anybody that’s a big ratings draw….I doubt Walker would be as useful the second go around…although that wouldn’t be comparing apples to apples if his next fight was on CBS…since he fought on Showtime in his last fight…
But yea, for them to avoid the Canseco/Walker fiasco was smart on their part…I mean…they had to avoid that right? They really would have been ridiculed for that one IMO…so they did what they should have been doing all along…promote their brand of champions(should be promoting their BRAND as well..but they are not because they are being controlled by Showtime/CBS to a degree)….
This show will probably not do well at all ratings wise…and this could very well be the last time we see them on network television.

If they do well rating wise, I’m sure CBS will invest some money in them as long as they keep the ratings up. I think Strikeforce is running the proper amount of shows a year. You get a lot of bang for your buck with Strikeforce.

That's the thing
How are they going to do well ratings wise? Also, I really think SF should cut out the Challengers shows…and use those resources to pull off 6-8 ‘big’ shows a year…I think I’m write a post on that…or one of you can take a stab at it…
