UFC 109 Prelims Ratings A Hit, Are They Influencing UFC PPV Buys?

The numbers are in for the UFC 109 prelims, which came it at an average of 1.7 million viewers.  Here's how the ratings have stacked up since the UFC first started airing preliminary fights on Spike TV at UFC 103:

Here’s a breakdown of the ratings thus far.

Event HH 18-34 18-49 Viewers
103 1 1.5 1.3 1,400,000
104 1.1 1.3 1.3 1,400,000
106 1 1.2 1.1 1,300,000
108 1 1.4 1.3 1,500,000
109 1.2 1.6 1.6 1,700,000

Having an average of 1.7 million people has to affect the PPV buyrate somewhat.  The only thing we don't know is how many of those 1.7 were planning on buying the PPV event anyway?  I do know this, that if the UFC Prelim fights that air are really entertaining, that could certainly influence someone to purchase the PPV.  The thought process goes like this.

"Man, those two fights were off the chain and there's more fights after this?  Oh man, I gotta watch those jawns.  Let me order this PPV and see what's up."

So even with somewhat less intriguing events like UFC 108 and 109, it's possible that the UFC is getting PPV buys that they wouldn't normally get.

It’s important they continue to get fighters with decent name-value (for the intitial draw) that are fairly exciting (to influence people to buy the PPV).

But yeah I’ve stated this before, this is a win-for-everybody-scenario; more free MMA and with that more new viewers, more exposure for more fighters who can negotiate better sponsorship-deals, more buys = more money for Zuffa.

yep

also…if you purchase the PPV…you get to see a MIINIMUM of 7 fights all together…I mean…you can’t really argue with that.

And personally I would be deeply unsatisfied with only getting two fights in one sitting… that’s like getting a sallad when you crave a big ass bloody steak.

lol

I feel you…but if the two fights shown are barnburners…I’ll be aight….but I would like to get three fights in as they do sometimes do.

the one downside of it is sometimes they show the fights over again during the PPV like they did for 108 and with me, I’ll go off and do something else while that’s on and end up missing something because I’ve turned away or gone to a different room

True..but I normally just watch it again to be honest….unless it’s a Guida/Diaz style fight…

Buffer saying ‘Guida’ seems to trigger a biological mechanism that alerts my brain that it’s time to go to the toilet… something about the dude just makes me have to take a dump.

long term, it builds name recognition for guys that are on the main card/ppv later on.

Gatti. Dekkers. Pele. Aoki. Kang. Vanderlei. Basillio. Harry Greb.
