UFC 110 Aftermath: Cain Velasquez Talks Brock Lesnar
UFC heavyweight phenom Cain Velasquez was asked about a potential fight with UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar at the post-fight press conference. Velasquez had this to say about the current champion:
"For me, I have to fight a smart fight and get with my coaches and figure out a good game plan," "Definitely, with those kind of guys -- super big, strong...you’ve really got to worry about the power. I think this could be a war; you’ve really got to fight to the end. You’ve gotta really try to tire them out, but that’s easier said than done."
I'll have a piece up on Velasquez on tomorrow which will detail something I really overlooked going into his matchup with Nogueira at UFC 110. So be on the lookout for that. After seeing his performance at UFC 110, what do you think his chances are against Lesnar if they do fight later this year?

Id look to the Couture fight just because of the size similarities kinda sorta. Lesnar is no where near as good as hes hyped IMO. Hes not gonna handle everyone like he did with Mur. Its just not gonna happen. Cain will have to have a great gameplan and execute it bottom line. I actually think they won’t even fight. Carwin is gonna smash Mur and then Lesnar so Cain should just start studying him lol.
I'm gonna make a bold prediction here and say Cain "pillowhands" (as some of you have called him) lol Velasquez catches Nog right on the chin and finishes via strikes on the ground. Nog looked good against an old Randy. It didn't show me much. We’ll see.

no doubt mir is on a mission. under three minutes mir submits carwin
no need to stand up and strike and possibly get hurt vs carwin. mir has to come out unscathed vs carwin to get first crack at lesnar. silva looked good vs bisping and i think he will beat akiyama. i will say bisping’s footwork has gotten much better. i saw improvement in him also. it came down to those last 20 seconds of third round. he needed that knockdown. i’m happy for silva b/c the guy puts on a good show and has incredible heart and deserve’s some better money for the things he has accomplished in his career.

i would put cain velasquez vs jds next and then the winner gets the winner of lesnar/ mir vs carwin
they said july 4th would be when lesnar is due back. i think mir beats carwin goes on to fight lesnar. jds will beat gonzaga so he will get his chance vs cain v. great night for arizona state wrestlers. 3-0. bader, dollaway and cain velasquez all went there.

Forrest called for the same fight last night
But I’m not sure if I’d be so fast to pass JDS up to that level. He’s certainly got the fights and wins, but if that fight goes down then one of them will inevitably lose (pretty epic logic there, eh?), and then you’ve got to build the guy back up to move him into the upper echelon.
Unfortunately I don’t have a better alternative, but let’s face it: the heavyweight division right now is Lesnar, Mir, Carwin, JDS and Velasquez. Eventually they’ll probably all get fights against Lesnar, even if he loses the strap, but when they start fighting eachother you lose the ability to have a marketable heavyweight title bout.

Lesnar would have his way with Cain
Better wrestling… Cain has better standup, but I think Nog’s chin aint what it used to be (not to take anything away from Cain), and I think Lesnar would be able to take Cain down and G’n’p away before Cain could do anything.
Yea
if Cain got under Lesnar like Mir did….it’s a wrap….

Personally, I’d view Velasquez as more deserving of a title shot than either Carwin, Mir or Dos Santos (whose prospects I really like). Especially if Mir gets by Carwin, I just don’t see why they’d pass Cain by. Lesnar just flattened Mir in his last fight. It’s okay if they want to give him a rematch but at least let Brock give one other fighter a shot in the interim. Just my thoughts.
Yea I agree
I think the logic with Carwin is…if he somehow gets back Mir…he’s already like 34….and he would have beaten two legitimate heavyweights in Gonzaga and Mir(finally)…JDS and Velasquez are much younger…so they have some time with them
