Poll: Is Zuffa Invading Twitter?

Yesterday the UFC sent out a press release revealing that Dana White's twitter account has reached a million followers. Why? The UFC has more eyeballs everytime they do live prelims. Why is it so important to the UFC that Dana has a million followers? Is it Narcissism? This tweet is from the UFC's twitter account:

Whoooo sooo close to 100K followers. #ff us tomorrow, we'll give five more of you prizes.

Does the UFC really think think they can garner more viewers from twitter? Can they? Here is another tweet from the same account:

Tell us... which fighters would you want to have guest-Tweeting from @UFC during live events?

Promotions such as Strikeforce, Shine, and Bellator don't take advantage of twitter the same way the UFC has so quickly. It seems those promotions just try and cater as much as they can to their base.

Star-divide

Next the WEC. Check out this tweet from WEConVERSUS:

Don't forget #FF @weconversus and @reedharriswec for a chance to win @fightmagazine signed by @josealdojunior. 3 random winners!

So what do you all make of Zuffa trying to attract fans using twitter?

I think they are already using it effectively

I mean…when Dana White sends out a tweet that he’s at some destination…and hundreds of people show up in minutes? Yea, it could be feeding his ego a bit…but at the same time he’s a part of the brand(UFC). You don’t get a million followers just for the hell of it.

I think it's a little of everything

Some people follow Twitter like a religion, some people don’t care and some people (myself) could do without it. However, it offers an easy means for anyone, from some kid running a lemonade stand, to the CEO of a major organization an easy and free way to send out tidbits of information to anyone paying attention. And you can’t deny that people are paying attention. I don’t know if it will garner them any more viewers, but at the very least it gives the people who already pay attention the illusion that they’re one step away from the boss, and somehow in the know. If Johnny B Average follows Dana, he might be the first guy on the block to know where Dana is, and what he’s doing.
