UFC 125: Decision
is anyone excited to see Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard fight for the strap? The two of them have 16 wins by decision (8 apiece) between the two of them and their combined 24 fights. I bet the money/odds are great for anyone dumb enough to bet on this fight NOT going the distance.
I don't know which is worse, Edgar's "energizer bunny optical illusion/Clay Guida" points wins or Maynard "exactly enough takedowns per fight to win over the judges" style.

I am very excited to watch the best lightweight in the world avenge his only loss.

I refuse to admit that a guy who lost to Gray Maynard is the #1 LW in the world. Gray Maynard? Are you kidding me? The guy who slammed himself into sleep land against Rob Emerson?
Maynard’s laid his way to the W against Edgar, Siver, Clementi, Miller, and Florian.
I felt he lost the Huerta, Diaz and other than a few well-timed takedowns, i felt he lost to KenFlo b/c he did almost nothing the whole fight minus being on top for part of 2 out of 3 rounds.
By that logic, he’s the 2nd best LW in the world b/c he’s fighting the UFC’s LW belt holder.

I agree with some of what you’re saying. Although George St. Pierre is as legit a world champion as you’ll find and he lost to Matt Serra of all people. Anderson Silva is a world champion and lost to Daiju Takase (a guy with a 9-13 record). Frank lost to an undfeated fighter that was a high-level collegiate wrestler. Having said all that, I also fully expect this fight to go to the scorecards.
Other than outpointing BJ, Frankie’s not exactly a resume of domination either. He’s beaten BJ 2x, but other than that the names you recognize on his resume are: Fisher, Bocek, Miller, Franca, and Sherk.
Sherk is the ONLY top flight guy on his resume other than BJ.

Yet he’s the UFC world champion. How many people have ever beaten BJ Penn at lightweight? One person: Jens Pulver. Frankie Edgar beat BJ Penn TWICE.
Frankie Edgar has 14 fights and he’s only lost one. Saying a young fighter doesn’t have a “resume of domination” is absurd. He came up through a natural progression that led to him challenging and winning a title. He’s not an also-ran who’s had to fight a bunch of tough fights to continually try to be in title contention. You’re holding his age and experience against him.
If Edgar would’ve lost to BJ (either time) and then went on to beat two of the best available UFC lightweights and then won the title, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. You’re penalizing him for winning the title too fast. That’s weak.
by Matt Bishop on Nov 26, 2010 10:06 PM EST up reply actions
No what’s really weak is the idea that Edgar outpointed BJ in both fights, the fact is he beat BJ’s ass and made him look out of his league in the rematch. This bs about Frankie being boring has to be the dumbest thing i’ve read in a long time the guy puts on a clinic everytime he comes out. If you find that boring go and watch K1 or pro-wrestling because Frankie is everything an mma fighter should be and I expect him to finish Gray who hasn’t improved much since they fought while Edgar has in all areas.

frankie wasn’t looking to finish in either of his fights with BJ. it was clear he intended to be more active, and ride out the W on points, which is the standing version of lay n pray.
do just enough to get the rounds in the bank and never look to finish. guys like Condit, Shogun, Maia (on the mat)…i just want to see guys look to finish b/c it’s MMA, and there’s a dozen or more ways to win if not more.
judges and the vague criteria are as much to blame as anything, b/c guys have figured out how to do enough to put a round in the bank (see the Harris fight Falcao for a recent example of this trend. Falcao “won” the fight….but the 2nd and 3rd rounds were atrocious to watch.

Well, Gerald Harris doesn’t have his job anymore and Falcao wouldn’t have a job either if they could contractually cut him.
by Matt Bishop on Nov 28, 2010 11:57 PM EST up reply actions
there’s not a clause in the contract that says you have to be kept if you win. Dana said in the post fight wrap-up that he excused him b/c it was his first fight in the UFC.
remember when dana said he’d fire anderson if he fought like he did in abu dhabi again? if they can terminate the spyder for a terrible fight, they can terminate anyone else. plenty of guys don’t see their contract completed if they lose a couple in a row.

Actually, I’m fairly positive there is. It’s a contract for X fights over X time (whichever comes first) for X pay, with a clause that if you lose they can cut you. You think if that wasn’t the case, they wouldn’t have cut Nick Lentz?

did u see urijah’s leg after that fight? that was not a lay n pray in standing form. aldo said he had a lot of respect for urijah and didn’t want to expose himself. he picked urijah apart the entire fight….ala anderson silva’s stand-up.

You’re either blind or delusional to say that Frankie who completelly dominated BJ in all areas and made him look pathetic was looking to ride out the fight is simply ridiculous. Frankie put on a clinic on BJ in their second fight, just because it went to a decision to somehow try and connect that to a standing version of lay n pray is wrong on all counts.

Buddy, the only one exposing themselves here is you
Saying crazy things about Penn being “dominated” and being made to look “pathetic”. The guy blowing the past way the eff out of proportion calling anyone a fanboy is just laughable.

Yes I exposed myself by actually describing what happened in the second fight between Penn and Edgar. I know it must hurt to see the invinsible BJ, humbled and utterly outclassed by a FW but shit happens, trying to deny it and spin basically exposes you for what you are.

I'm pretty sure that BJ isn't invisible
I mean hey, I’ve seen him at least once or twice!
Humbled? Outclassed? No. He was thoroughly, and I mean THOROUGHLY out-pointed, but in no way was he beaten up, or otherwise “humbled”. He got jabbed at by a featherweight for five rounds and was outpointed like a mofo. If you want to ride Edgar’s jock while pissing on Penn that’s fine, but just because someone calls you out on your absurdity doesn’t mean they’re a fanboy. Penn is a headcase, he doesn’t train right, he asks for too much money, and he’s a good fighter when he feels like it. He’s flawed just like anyone else, and if you see anyone say something to the contrary then they’re flat out wrong. If you don’t like it that the RVCA zombies say he got ripped off that’s cool, but shouting from the hilltops that they’re fanboys just makes you another Sherdog tool.

And what does being in complete denial about BJ being beaten badly and in everyway make you?. Because you either need to get your eyes checked or have drowned in the Penn kool-aid to not see what everyone else saw that night. I know BJ fans like to live in their own world but there has to be a limit to the delusion. BJ was completelly dominated and outclassed this outpointed bs if just that he was embarrased by a natural 145 those are the facts.

Troll all you want
But last time I checked, BJ wasn’t at any point put in a situation where he was at risk of being KO’d, TKO’d or submitted. I can’t tell whether you just can’t help but drool all over Edgar, or if you just hate Penn, but you’re about the only person I’ve heard saying that Penn got whupped on pillar to post. See, most people tend to reserve these strong words you’re using for a fighter who gets finished, or in some way hurt, not for a man who got outpointed for five rounds.

Well, you don’t have to be in danger to be whooped. Penn’s barely been in danger by anybody in his entire career. Edgar beat Penn soundly in that fight. More soundly and convincingly than any 155-pounder has done. It was complete domination.
http://blog.fightmetric.com/2010/08/edgar-vs-penn-ii-fightmetric-report.html
Yeah, he got outpointed horrendously
And yet I didn’t see Penn limping away from the cage a broken and battered man. Adjectives like “pathetic”, “dominated” and “humbled” are words that I use for when someone really takes a beating. Penn lost, and the 50-45 scorecards reflect that. I’m not making any excuses for Penn, because he rightfully lost, but Frankie Edgar did not administer an epic ass whupping like it’s made out to be.

It wasn’t even close either which is what surprises me that people keep acting like Frankie was running around pawing at Bj with his jab. He hit him at will, took him down pounded on him and basically made the GOAT at LW look broken and outclassed in everyway if that wasn’t as clear cut a beating as possible I don’t know what is.
