George St. Pierre Thinking About Chasing Olympic Dreams In Wrestling
From the Canadian Press:
I'm a good wrestler but if I wanted to do it, I would have to focus on wrestling and dedicate myself 100 percent for a period of time. I would not retire now but if I decided to do it I would have to dedicate myself 100 percent I would say maybe for a year and a half or so. I have a decision to take but I don't know if I'm ready to do it. I just need to think about it right now.... I'm going to tell you the truth, right now I don't have the level that I need to do it. If I go right now to do it, I'm going to lose. I'm not good enough right now to do it. And I don't know if I'm going to be able to be good enough to do it.... I'm going to do it if I know I have a good chance to make it. I'm the kind of guy that when I do something, it's to be on top. I don't do something to try to do it. if I do it, it's because I'm going to win, I'm going to go 100 percent.... I have to talk with a lot of people ... all my trainers, all my sponsors. All the people that helped me to get where I'm at. Because it's not going to be forever. It's just going to be a period of time, then after I'll be back if I decide to do it."
I can say how much this would suck as an MMA fan, but I can't really knock a guy for going after something if he really wants it. We are talking about a guy in his physical prime at 28 years old that's at the peak of his game in regards to MMA. He has been the Canadian athlete of the year two years running(Roger's Sportsnet) and has signed ground breaking sponsorship deals with Gatorade and Under Armour. Do you think GSP should go for gold in the Olympics?

I agree
I want to see the best fighters fight as much as they can. It pisses me off when hockey players on my team leave to play in the olympics but what are you going to do?

I doubt he will make it. He’s battling cats that been doing this all their lives. I mean, I am not saying he does not have potential, the guys on the Canadian National squad think he’s good enough to consider attending the Trials. Plus, like you said, he is the face of the sport and he got ground breaking sponsorships with Gatorade and Under Armour. I am not sure if that is the best idea to put that on hold when the odds of him making the squad are highly stacked against him.

It is not as farfetched as it would seem. According to a few of my friends who have seen him train with the national team he seems to hold his own well enough. I realize there is a huge difference between olympic matches and grappling in a gym but the guy has talent for wrestling. I went to a seminar he had at a mma gym about a half hour from my house a few years ago and it was impressive to watch a guy weighing 190lbs easily out muscle guys with 40-50lbs more weight on him. Really genuine and a friendly guy but his raw strength is freaking scary.
Some people are like Slinkies... not really good for anything, but you still can't
help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs...

It wouldn't suck
Of course the WW division will miss him, not to mention the possible opportunity to face Anderson Silva at MW but if he does well, it would look really good for MMA. There are a number of MMAthletes looking to compete in boxing . . . what the heck. He’s been competing in MMA since 2000 or 2002? Time for a change I guess, there’s nobody in the division that’s really challenging him unless Dan Hardy can prove otherwise.
Koscheck looks like he would give him a run for his money in a rematch but who knows.
GSP + Olympics = cool

for a guy that’s only beaten arguably 3 full (2 of which he simply decisioned) blown guys in his weight class that are top tier fighters (Hughes, Fitch, Alves)…and BJ Penn 2x above his natural weight, went 1-1 against Matt Serra….he sure seems to think he has nothing left to prove at Welter weight.
i’m still refusing to drink the GSP Kool-Aid.
I want to see someone dominate a weight class ala BJ or A. Silva before it comes across like they have no other challenges in their @ a given weight.
Gatti. Dekkers. Pele. Aoki. Kang. Vanderlei. Basillio. Harry Greb.

Umm
I’d say that GSP has dominated his weight class moreso than BJ Penn….Penn is fighting top ten guys….but they are not considered by most to be #2 and #3 guys….where as Fitch, Alves, Koscheck, and Hughes were all top 5 when he whipped them.
