The Sun Finally Shines On Jay Hieron A Little, Riggs Fight Will Air Via LIVE Stream

Strikeforce Welter Weight Jay Hieron

That's the word from Sherdog:

A welterweight bout between Jay Hieron and Joe Riggs will air on a live stream at EASports.com in conjunction with Strikeforce "Miami" this Saturday at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.

The single bout will broadcast live on EA Sport’s MMA page at 9:05 p.m. EST/6:05 p.m. PST.

Prior to this news, Hieron would have been on the prelims once again with no exposure whatsoever.  Let's be clear though, this still sucks for him because it's not like anybody except diehard fans will be going to this stream to watch it.  While Strikeforce allows Herschel Walker AND Bobby Lashley to be on the main card of the fight.  Walker is making his MMA debut.  Why not let his fight be streamed and allow the veteran in Hieron get some shine?  Not to mention that Hieron's last fight against Jesse Taylor didn't make the televised portion of the event which cost him a pretty penny with sponsors pulling money from him because the fight wasn't televised.

You serious?

Freak show or not, Herschel Walker is a sports LEGEND. Hm…Heisman trophy winner or Jay Hieron? Which would create more interest in the show to the public, hm…

Don’t cry for Jay Hieron. He’s the dude who turned down the UFC deal. He’s the dude that turned down a title fight with Zaromskis because Zaromskis wasn’t a big enough “star” in the US. He’s the dude who hired Ken Pavia to manage him.

As someone who saw that Hieron/Taylor fight, people would’ve turned off Strikeforce and not looked back that night, which would’ve been bad.

And Riggs didn’t exactly light it up last time out, either.

And I agree with everything Forrest said above.

Ha!

So THAT’S Forrest…ain’t that some shit…lol…oh…I undertand why Walker is there…don’t get it twisted…we know why Lashley is there…but for the guy to be making his DEBUT and on the main card against a nobody is a bit much…which is why I said they could show his fight via the stream….which would draw in more fans than Hieron/Riggs will…thus creating a ‘lead-in’ if you will…

Dude...

You don’t bump Herschel Walker from television for a totally unknown fighter with a boring style. That’s goofy ass talk. I guess you should put Kimbo on the prelims, too.

by Forrest Lynn on Jan 25, 2010 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

lol

Kimbo is a proven draw…Walker hasn’t proven anything yet ratings wise…I suppose you are expecting this show to do like 2 million viewers or something on Showtime…

No it’s not going to.

But no other Strikeforce fighter is on Fox news in the morning, ESPN first take or Howard Stern’s radio show either drumming up a little exposure for the event like Herschel was last week.
How would it sound for him to make these TV appearances telling people to tune into the fights on Showtime Jan. 30th for the Strikeforce event, but if you want to see me check out EA Sports MMA page my fight will be on there?

Putting Walker and Lashley on the main card over Hieron/Riggs is without question the best thing.

Kimbo was a star with no experience when he headlined EliteXC.

When you’re a star, you don’t have to earn your way. Herschel Walker is a star. A legendary sports figure. You don’t put him on an online stream that no one will watch. This is a PR boon for Strikeforce; you can put Herschel on the radio, ESPN, TV, everything. You want to market Jay Hieron like that?

by Forrest Lynn on Jan 25, 2010 10:27 PM EST reply actions

Furthermore...

Herschel is on the card to draw casual fans, not hardcores. Casuals are far more important than hardcores, because hardcores will watch anyways. You market cards for casual fans.

For sure

the thing is Walker…was a star….in football like a long time ago….the kats in the 18-34 year old demo barely remember the dude…

In regards to Kimbo….fans could equate his street fighting to MMA…they knew he could at least knock somebody out which created the allure to him….football ain’t fighting.

Dude, it's not about fighting.

You’d be an awful promoter. It’s not about FIGHTING. It’s about selling tickets and drawing viewers. If you don’t think Herschel Walker fighting on Showtime will draw more viewers than Jay Hieron would, I really can’t help you.

by Forrest Lynn on Jan 25, 2010 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't ask for your help dude...lol

He probably will draw in more viewers….I doubt it’ll be a significant increase though. Also, at 47 years old…it’s not like they can ride that train very long at all.

That’s exactly why they need to extract everything they can out of him right now. They have no time to waste.

by Matt Bishop on Jan 25, 2010 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

It's a waste of time

What are they going to get….like 3 fights max out of the guy. I mean…is he going to fight Fedor in his 3rd fight? Yet, they’ll have a guy that could potentially be their welterweight champion in 2 fights on the prelims for the second show in a row…

BTW…I just checked…and I can get blocks of seats for this event in the $50 section….not good.

I don't like it

But I get it. At the end of the day, it’s Hieron’s own fault that he’s stuck on the prelims, instead of on a UFC card. Don’t get me wrong, I think the fact that the guy has been prelimed twice is some weaksauce, but it’s not exactly like he signed with an organization that was guaranteed to put him on the main event slot, even on Showtime.

At the end of the day, it makes sense from a promotional sense to put the likes of Walker and Lashley on the main card. They’re sure as hell not the best competitors that Strikeforce has to offer, but I’d be surprised if people really tuned in to see Jay Hieron. I think the best solution would be to split apart the Lashley and Walker fight, and stick them on different fight cards. That way they can get their “draws” on TV, and real fighters aren’t relegated to prelims.

Walker and, to a lesser degree, Lashley are unsafe investments on SF’s part. The reward with Heiron is lesser, but so is the risk in a long-term perspective.
