Jake Shields To Be Assistant Coach On TUF 11
MMA SpotStrikeforce Champion Jake Shields To Be Assistant Coach On TUF 11
Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields has agreed to be a part of Chuck Liddell’s coaching staff on the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter." The highly decorated fighter made the announcement in an email to his fan club members Wednesday evening. The show begins its six-week taping session soon, and will premier on Spike TV on March 31.
The grappling ace will be a part of Chuck Liddell’s coaching staff for season 11 of the hit reality television show. Shields credits Liddell for getting him interested in the sport; "Chuck asked me a couple weeks ago and I'm always willing to help him out. Chuck was the one who originally got me into MMA in the first place. I owe him a lot but besides that I'm excited to be part of TUF and hopefully I'm able to help Chucks team get the finals."
Shields (24-4-1), a consensus top five welterweight, recently moved up to middleweight to capture the Strikeforce title this past November. In that bout he would win a lopsided decision over Jason "Mayhem" Miller, displaying a wide array of his Cesar Gracie black belt level jiu-jitsu. Among his twenty-four wins, Shields has victories over Robbie Lawler, Paul Daley, Nick Thompson, Carlos Condit, Yushin Okami, Dave Menne, Akira Kikuchi, and Hayato Sakurai.
"The Ultimate Fighter 11" will feature Liddell and his team of middleweights, facing off against "The Hunting Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz and his team. This will be the second time around coaching for both fighters, and will likely lead to an epic third battle between the two legendary fighters.
Shields, himself, understands that while he is in Las Vegas training the next generation of middleweight champions, he too may end up training for an epic battle; ". I'm leaving San Francisco tomorrow morning and I'm headed to Vegas for six weeks to shoot the show, as well as train, just in case Strikeforce finalizes my next fight." That next fight could come as early as April against former Pride champion Dan Henderson.
Interesting to see. I wonder if this is hinting at Shields coming over once his Strikeforce contract ends?

I would love to see Shields move to the UFC. But, he’s got his hands full with Henderson at the moment. Does his contract automatically add another title defense if he wins?
if they are smart...it should
He’s not going to beat Henderson though…I used to want to see Shields in the UFC as a WW…but if he’s going to fight tentative like he did in his last fight….ehh..I can do without…

Kind of surprised that the brass would ‘ok’ this… I know there has been outside guys coaching on the show before, but I can’t recall a relatively high-profile dude from the number one “rival” appearing like that though (“rival” because, yeah… well, that’s another topic, let’s leave it at that)
"I don’t care, hit him with your groin!"
Strikeforce brass you mean?
Of course the UFC would want this…as they could put that bug in Shields ear!

Nah, Spike TV!-exposure for one of their champs is nothing but good for Strikeforce.

lol
man…those casual fans don’t even know who Shields is…not to mention he’ll rarely be on camera…

Strangely they promoted one of Cung Le’s movies on a Fight Night. Weird

Like the last 2 bugs they put in his ear that he turned down?
It’s rare that we even hear a coach speak on the show let alone get any real camera time outside of a quick spot on one episode.
But because I’m a Shields mark, I’ll be tuning in for this season for the first time in a long time.

he had no choice this last go round after SF purchased his EliteXC contract

Nah
He could’ve gotten out, but like a lot of the other fighters it would’ve probably been in court as long as it would’ve taken to fulfil the contract, so he just fought. Rumor is that’s why it took so long for Gina to get on board, it was because her lawyers were trying to figure out a way to get out, or get more money.

Well...
..if I had to choose between chopping my dick off and eating an ice-cream cone, it’s a no-brainer. There’s still a choice to be had though ;)

I've got a feeling
That ol’ Jake isn’t going to be seeing any camera time. I know that the UFC wants him, but he’s hands-off until he drops that gold and finishes his contract.

Naw
UFC don’t want him. Dana just but him on blast and if Jake dosen’t develop some finishing skills I doubt he will go to the UFC.

Hmm
I think they’d take him for sure…but I’m also sure that they would rather have Mousasi over Shields.

Oh no
They want him. They almost had him once, but it fell-through because he would’ve been a late-replacement and he couldn’t make the weight in time, but Joe Silva has been working for him for a while. If he’s not the champ when his contract is up, and Strikeforce doesn’t thorw a bunch of cash at him, he’ll be in the UFC.
